What have you done to your car today?

My rear wheel bearings disintegrated on me the other day, just finished putting new ones in. I think they were the originals so guess I cant complain, just wish it hadnt happened at 100kmh on the freeway surrounded by cars!

Can others please check to see how warm their bearings get? My new ones are too hot to touch, not sure if this is normal. Much hotter than the fronts...

did u tention them nachaluva?

Do you mean use a torque wrench to get the correct torque on the axle castle nut? No I didnt have the setting or the torque wrench. I just did em about 250Nm.

Just reading FSM, it says should be 186Nm...Definitely overtightened! Bugger!!!

Yeah that sounds like the problem to me. I am surprised that the bearing haven't started squealing at you yet. Hopefully you havent damaged them at all.

When i bought my old 83 paddock basher the dodgy dealer I bought it off had loosened the nut so the stuffed bearings would be silent. Tightened it up and boy it made a hell of a racket.

I decided to move this light from the back roof rail ...

where it's been for a couple months down to the rear bumper. I have only used the light a handful of times and have found it to be very impractical as it can't be adjusted/swivel.

After getting stuck the night before last in a deep rut and having to make the embarrassed call to a mate at 10pm (luckily I remembered he was coming home from work past where I was), during the recovery I saw the advantages of having a good reverse light, I decided I wanted one too.

So, after a bit of (dodgy) cutting to make the light fit depth wise, it fits perfect and looks the part! I will try it out tonight. Just need to move the switch from the boot area to the front now...

Picture of it just sitting there - can see the bolt at the top - and the best thing is the cover can still be placed over the light to hide it!

Ah, forgot about that requirement! Thanks for the reminder, will get it sorted when the switch is put up front, until then hope I don't run into the cops...

There's a reverse 12v on the trailer loom under the d/s trim in the boot for a relay.

EDIT: It might even run the led lamp on it's own if your lucky.

Good hint IDW

I loosened the axle nuts & knocked the axles back in a little then retorqued them to exactly 136 ft lbs (186 Nm). Went for a test drive on the freeway & they still heated up but not bad. It was a very cold wet day so the test will be another warm day, hopefully all will be fine

What type of bearings do foresters have in the rear NachaLuva? Are they tapered roller bearings or some other kind?

They come as a sealed unit with an inner & outer bearing. The one that disintegrated had round bearings in it bit smaller than a pea

In that case I doubt that you would have done much damage over tightening them. The inner races of bearings are pretty soild usually and I would have thought it unlikely that you crushed the spacer in between them unless it is pretty thin.

I use a 1.5m bar on a half in drive breaker bar to tighten an untighten my axle nuts. Never had a problem what's so ever... I wouldn't worry about damaging the bearing, very very unlikely.
God 99.9% of mechanics don't even torque s**t like that up, only pedantic people(no offence). Just do the **** up tight and be done with it. The only real time you have to worry about torquing up thing is when rebuilding an engine.

Good to hear Taza & Dedman

The heat isnt coming from the cv is it? They tent to get pretty warm even when they are in good nick

No definitely the bearing. When it went it was actually smoking. & the new ones were hot almost immediately, too hot to touch. The outer CV had barely any warmth in it.

Time will tell....
