She's the smaller black dog. Still really just a pup. Run over a day before the anniversary of when we rescued her when she was skinny, malnourished mut we found locked up and dumped in the bush in a public toilet. This is the day we left and then the day we got back form our big offroad trip. Dogs were stoked.

Here are a couple recent pics of Rocko now, will be 3 already this July......

Thanks. Yes, he's a Doberman mixed with something. He's a very SMALL one though (he weights only 48 pounds). He was the runt of his liter, but the only one that survived sadly. I rescued him at the shelter, and paid close to $2000 within the first week to keep him alive (he had Parvo, Distemper, other intestinal parasites, etc.) He wouldn't have made it through the first night I got him as he was very weak, so I took him to an emergency vet clinic, and he was there for a week or so being treated. When I initially went to adopt him, I filled out all the paperwork at the shelter and paid for him, and I went to pick him up the next day.

I was holding him, and they informed me that he was showing signs of Parvo and that I wouldn't be able to adopt him. I asked why and they said that they would be "liable" somehow and that he would have to be put down. I told them no (me still holding him) and that I already paid for him and that the paperwork was done. I also told them the whole point of RESCUING a dog is to take over responsibility of his health to keep dogs from being put down. Knowing about Parvo, I also informed them that Parvo is not an incurable illness, and that it's a very simple thing to treat. They said no, and tried to take him from me, I told them to f**k off and walked out with him. They said they would call the police and I said "You have my name and address, go for it!" And left. Never heard from them, never heard from the police.

X2!!! I must say your photography skills are top notch too Blue Fox.

Thanks. Those were the first 2 pictures I took with my new Canon 60D DSLR. I'm trying to get used to the new camera and how epic it is. I'm used to "getting by" with my older point-and-shoot camera, but it's so freaking easy to take a great pic with this new DSLR. Can't wait to start taking video with it.

Blue Fox, what can I say. You are a true animal lover & a true dog person & I'm lost for words. :)

Good on you for giving it to them

Like you say....
.....the whole point of RESCUING a dog is to take over responsibility of his health to keep dogs from being put down.

If only there were more people in the world like you, then the world would be a much nicer place :bananatoast::bananatoast:

An amazing story...on your part Blue Fox!!! Almost tragic on the shelters part.
Good on you for taking that amazing dog and saving his life!!!:bananatoast:

Right on! I've known several people who's pups when they got them had parvo and ended up dying. Never known one to survive. Amazing what a tough little fella he is!
You did the right thing by tellin them to f*** off, saved his life!

Right on! I've known several people who's pups when they got them had parvo and ended up dying. Never known one to survive.

That's unfortunate. Parvo is a fairly easy illness to treat. Parvo is nothing more than an intestinal parasite that causes the dog to vomit, diarrhea and become lethargic (not wanting to eat or drink). Dogs don't die from Parvo, they die from dehydration. Parvo doesn't last long, it usually takes 3 days for it to pass. During this time, the vet hooks the pup up to IV fluids, and gives a couple of shot of immune-boosting antibiotics. The vet bill was higher than normal because I opted to go to an emergency vet clinic (about double the prices of normal vets). But we don't have a 24-hour vet here, only the emergency place is 24-hours. And they even agreed he wouldn't have made it through the night. Normal cost of treating Parvo at a normal vet runs $500-700. But I also had to pay for IV antibiotics for his other illnesses as well though, so that brought up the bill as well.

This was him at the vet. I couldn't get off work, so I visited him in the morning, during my lunch break and a couple times after work for the week he was at the clinic. I literally left in tears each time feeling so bad for him as he was only a mere 5-weeks old, just out of that horrific shelter, and now hooked up to IV's in a cage for a week. But it was all worth it, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

This is him at the shelter the day I went to pick him up while I was waiting for the paperwork to be finished.....

And here is the poor guy the day after I took him into the vet. He was doing much better and wanted so badly to be held. I couldn't play with him (due to the IV), but they allowed he to at least hold him......

Just thought I'd post an update on my Belgian Shepherd.

About a week or so ago, he took another really bad turn & I thought I was going to loose him :sadbanana: He was that bad that I actually discussed, with the vet, about putting him down. I was devistated & in tears  :sadbanana:
They advised a slight change in his medication, so lets give him 24hrs to see how he responds
Lets just say that it was a very long 24hrs.
The next day when I went to visit him, he had improved dramatically. It was amazing

I'm happy to say that he's turned the corner, is out of the woods & almost back to normal :woohoo:

^^ Good new indeed. Great to hear you didn't have to put him down. I'm a bit embarrassed to say this, but if I even think about loosing or having to put Rocko down, I start to tear up. Hearing about other people's experiences with being close to, or having to put down their dogs makes me tear up as well. I love my dogs like they're my children. And in some cases, more loyal. Good to hear your pup is back up and well again.
