What have you done to your car today?

My gearbox finally let go mid way through a set of lights. I was luckily on a hill and managed to roll the car down and pull off the side away from the traffic. Made the loudest bang and I thought it was first gear but all gears are gone. Its making wierd noises even when in nuetral without clutch in, stops when you put the clutch in..

Managed to limp the car home in 3rd low(which was the only one that slotted in) with no other gears. Was only 1.5km away from home so I could of walked if I was unable to limp it home.

I had the same problem with 1 of my bolts. Try letting some "Penetrene" soak in overnight, I've found its the best one to loosen stuck bolts or nuts.
We used a spanner with a 4' pipe as an extension & 2 of us hanging off the end. Man, you should've seen that spanner bend lol  I was sure it was gonna snap, but eventually we got it loose.

As I have no friends I had to use my noodle, I put a block of wood under the car (Old chopping board) attached a spanner to the bolt and nut pointing towards the ground and then lowered the jack, undid the bolt in moments

Actually, a rotten day to add to your string of misfortunes!! :( :(

My old Landcruiser gear box or transfer case would have just "chewed up" any extra bits floating around, but I don't think our gearboxes are thinly disguised grinding mills ... ;). When I stripped my Cruiser box and transfer case down, they were both full of metal filings that I am certain used to be much bigger ... For the previous 15,000 miles, I had to wear industrial ear muffs because of the turbine-like howl from the transfer case. 93 thou radial play on the main idle shaft - spec was about 3 thou, IIRC ... It was still functioning ... :rotfl:!!!!! All the oil had pumped out of the transfer case while the vehicle was driven at highway speeds for around 800 miles with about a ton in the back and a tandem horse float with two horses on board. When the mechanic took the filler plug out, by the time he got out from under the car (seconds - howling with pain ... I DID warn him ... ), he had a ring of huge blisters around his thumb and forefinger! I could feel the heat of the transfer case through the rubber floor mats AND my work boots ... :(. The TC lasted for around 35,000 miles after that before I pulled it down.

When my (second) Morris 1100 let go of first gear by stripping three teeth off one gear wheel and two off the mating gear, it didn't damage the rest of the box. All the extra bits were just floating around in the bottom, with the fine bits attached to the magnetic sump plug. But again, these boxes were designed to run in the same oil as the engine, so were pretty tough in that regard.

When you get your box apart, I very much hope that it is in better condition than it sounds. It does not sound good to me ... :shake:  ....

Thank goodness that you have your 'new' Sportswagon to keep you on the road in the interim. Also thank goodness that the box didn't let go halfway between Perth and home ...

Very sorry to hear of this latest in your string of bad luck, mate. You will surely remember this year! It will make a better story in 20 years' time than it does ATM :iconwink:.

BTW, with the box making noises like that, do not be tempted to drive it any further than you already have, IMO.

what were you carrying on the roof of your car?

First time they bent I had a quad (atv) in the roof basked (dont ask how I got it up there:iconwink:) no problems until i went over a few big bumps. There was never any damage to my Thule extended basket. The second time it was 4 heavy 90 pound (40 kg) kayaks loaded with gear. that would have probably been ok, but it rained overnight and they all got half filled with water. I continue to put that much weight on top of my car now and have had no problems now that I have the 4 Thule crossbars. :discomonkey:

A quad bike??? Are you ******* serious??? :surprised: :shake:
Mine wouldn't even fit but it is a 660cc and decent physical size. Mine will do 0-100km/hr in the same speed as Mr turbos Foz. lol

haha yeah I used a hand winch to hoist it up into my basket with the help of a big tree. It fit perfectly in the Thule extended basket. I think the thule extended basket is one of the largest and deepest baskets out there? comes in handy all the time. before thule I had a yakima basket but that one broke when it clipped a tree branch:cry: I seem to break everything. I need to be a product tester

Got any pics of it in there? or getting it up?

I thought I would ride my push bike to uni today since the Foz is out of action and I can't take the L there(no parking permit) and today of all days to rain it starts bucketing down

Got a new part for one of the vacuum lines I broke on the foz too.

Got to drive a 98 Foz with a JDM engine and gearbox in. Its producing 168kw and 300nm of torque so the same as a stock WRX in Aus. OMFG it was awesome and stupid quick. I really really want a turbo now  But the turbo lag would just annoy me, that was the only thing I didn't like. OMG it was soooo quick though :raspberry: It was my first time driving a turbo petrol or even being in one!

The car isn't going anywhere, its even parked the wrong way on the street
After making some phone calls and wait to hear back from people I should beable to get away with the box alone for $2000-$2500. This will be with a front geared LSD added and im looking into a lower low range (lower than 1.447.1) but it really depends on cost.
I am forgetting about adding a higher 5th gear or a locking centre as thats just out of the question at the moment. I think just doing those 2 things i would be happy enough plus with the rear autolocker which im gong to test in the rear diff it should go pretty well.
The odd thing though is that with the car running and it in nuetral without your foot on the clutch it makes really loud, knocking and loose sounds. Almost like all the bit are flowing around in the box. Im not going to bother with a rebuild because as ive been told that when 1st gear shattered and I wasn't able to access any other gear the teeth could of damaged even more thus the box needing even more work.

I can get a used box from a 2000 Forester with just over 100k on the clock for $1000 but as also said I don't know the conditon of it (although im told its fine). I would be pretty pissed if i bought it, put it in and it died or anything went wrong in the next 30,000 or what ever.
Im trying to get in contact with AllDriveSubaroo but am currently unable to as I know they do custom boxes.

I would really like to have got the XT. But the extra initial + ongoing cost and lack of low (med?) range put me off. Sooo fun to drive though. At sea level city driving the 2.5L NA manual has enough get up & go for me.

Sounds like input shaft has died. Be interesting to see the post mortem

Yes they are fun aren't they :quitar::quitar::rock:

You do & will get used to the turbo lag though :iconwink:

And you know why they have turbo lag don't you ?
It's to give V8's a chance

Regards
Mr Turbo

I switch quite easily between the non turbo Forie and the WRX- most times anyway. I drove the WRX to Mudgee on the weekend. With the new turbo, it revs like it has a short ratio box, even in 3rd and 4th. I thought something was wrong with the car- I hit the rev limiter so quickly- and that was 4th gear! It's addictive isn't it!
