What have you done to your car today?

I don't know what it is, COVID maybe, but the cheap old Libertys have all but dried up around here. I have been on the lookout for ages and all I see for sale is good ones. A few years ago when I didnt have a suitable workshop they were coming up all the time. Typical!

Simply age - there aren’t as many of them around as there were ten years ago. People just don’t appreciate a vehicle that isn’t packed full of technology these days.

Keep looking, one will pop up in the right place for a decent price ;)

Mmmm... Tractor... :)

What don’t you like about them @ratters? That’s what I’ll be replacing my poop road tyres I’ve off-roaded for the last three or four years with.

Keen to hear your thoughts - and what are you comparing them to?

Cheers

@El_Freddo Well I suppose I only have about 20 minutes experience on them so far, but I did notice right away that the car feels less planted on the road, the rubber compound is fairly soft and I did get a bit of a wallowing sensation going around corners. Like how cornering would feel if all your tyres were let down a bit. Plus the roaring road noise you get with an M/T. The previous tyres were Maxxis 751 A/T's which are sadly discontinued in this size or I would have run them again.

I also now have some tyre rubbing on the front mud guards when moving forward and turning hard parking the car, and previously I only had slight rubbing with the Maxxis while at full lock in reverse. So I guess they are somewhat larger. If its really annoying the mud flaps might have to be modified.

I am very much looking forward to getting offroad with them though!

Shhhh - Rally might be listening :D

Argh! I forgot that the desired word in my post gets changed to poop :(

Installed my newly acquired R160 LSD, old clutch type from a Leone RX Turbo. Took the opportunity to do the diff pinion mount and moustache bar bushes while I was at it. Bushes are always one of those things that you never know how bad they are until you change them, the car feels super tight now no slop or thumping changing gears anymore.

Just need to get offroad now and see how she performs!

Unless you have an AWD gearbox you shouldn’t be getting any clunks or feel any slip in the rear end with normal driving. Engage 4wd and that’s a different story...

When the moustache bar was out it was a good opportunity to weld a second one to it or weld another plate to it that adds strength. With those tyres you WILL twist it. Ask me how I know ;)

Gotta say you scored well there! Those clutch pack LSDs are super hard to find these days, let alone at a price a level headed person would pay for one! Hit me up for info on ratio change for the LSD if you ever get a different gearbox (4.111 is mint in the L series, 4.44 would be the ultimate I reckon).

PS: got the part number for those bushes?

@El_Freddo Yeah I see what your saying in 2WD the drivetrain slop shouldn't really be a thing, but in fairness my bushes were flogged, if they weren't original they were pretty damn old! So I guess just the rear end slopping around anyway. There is a remarkable improvement to say the least!

I didn't know about the double moustache bar trick.. I might have to nab that off my spare parts car before it goes to the scrap yard.

The moustache bar ends and pinion mount all use the same bush, I used SuperPro brand. The part no. is SPF3005K and they weren't too much trouble installing with a shop press. I just cut the old steel ones out with the reciprocating saw. I'd say all up a 40 minute job taking my time and cleaning as I went.

I paid $150 for the diff, and almost that again for the bushes so for under $300 its a pretty handy upgrade i reckon.

Back in the shed again today, this time rear brake shoes and outer oil seals. I hate drum brakes with a passion and a considerable amount of time has passed since I bought the new shoes so I just sucked it up and got stuck in. Also disassembled, inspected and cleaned wheel cylinders for good measure. I don't have rear wheel bearing noises but jeez the state of the grease in the bearings when I pulled the drums off... It might be another job I do sooner rather than later.

@ratters - what are drum brakes? :ROFLMAO:

$150 for a clutch LSD? That’s beyond a steal!!

Geez that brings back memories of pulling drum brakes apart! :)
It reminds me of the drum brakes of the air-cooled VW beetle. They don't have vacuum and when they get wet, weeekoooo!

Just recently, I solved a P1307 and a P1309 (OCV signal related ) on the GG9....with an oil change. The oil used before was 5W-30 but may be a bit lower, spec-wise, vs the A3/B4 that we usually put in. AVCS can be quite senstive and this is a 2002 EJ204 with a cable throttle. Imagine how sensitive much newer cars can be!
