What have you done to your car today?

They are looking quite scungey again. Must be at least two years (or a bit more) since I last did them.

Bought some highly expensive stuff at SCA, but the sandpaper approach put me off using it.

I will try to remember to do some before and after photos.
I've just done the headlights. They have come up very well. Some before and after photos:

Just a rub back with RePo cutting polish, then finished off with Porzelack carnauba wax polish.

Roo2 had its service today. First one in 6 years and about 20,000 kms. It has used no oil in that time. I haven't done lots of kms in that time!

Of course, Ross noticed the slightly dodgy front parking light, and checked and replaced the cabin air filter ... Seeing as how these are so bloody expensive ($50 retail), I will clean the old one ...

Nice new wipers.

And given a bath.

I put a MCM chopped fingers melon scented (JDM spec) air freshener in my RS today. Should smell JDM good now minus the tobacco smoke smell :D

Earlier in the week I replaced the old cluster globes with LED units. I wanted incandescent but Jaycar only deal with LEDs. So I went that way.

I painted the dome top of the LEDs with white industrial texta paint after some playing around with them in the dark:

LEDs on left, incandescent on the right. No mods to LEDs:

LED’s end dome painted with a white industrial texta, light setting at highest:

Lowest setting:

^ hot spots are very noticeable on the low setting, the camera highlights these really well as they don’t look this bad to the naked eye. I usually have the setting at mid to full depending on in town or country driving so this doesn’t bother me ;)

Not really a fan of LEDs but push came to shove on this one and I couldn’t be bothered chasing what I wanted any further. At least these white LEDs don’t have that blue tinge to them - I loath that and HIDs on the road (another thing I pulled out of this car!!)

Cheers

@El_Freddo Can these LEDs be fitted to an SG, Bennie?
My dash lights aren't bright enough during the day with the headlights on and wearing my sunnies.

I just thought that was because I was getting old... (didn't even think about the fact that the car was getting older too!)

@Ben Up North THAT definitely applies to most of me, Ben. However, my eyesight is still pretty good.

My problem is that when the headlights are on, the dash lights automatically dim. While I like this at night, during the day it's a PITA, and makes it hard to see. My driving sunnies are 85% cut out.

@Ratbag - I’m sure they could be. You just need to get the correct globes. The good thing is that these days they’re dimmable and you don’t not have to fit/work out the resistor required to make them work - they’re built into them!

You might be able to make out the resistors in the base of the LED (I pulled them out again today to play with them - I’m trying to eliminate the hot spots). Those base pieces are from the back of the cluster, the globes push into these as they’re a “T” style globe.

I hope this helps mate. I don’t know how bright they are during the day.

In other news. Nothing throws your build plans out the window like this does:

So pissed off to say the least!

Thinking I’ll have a play with honing the bore, if that smooths it out enough I’ll get some new rings and reassemble.

Now I’ve had some thinking time after talking to some mates I’ll do the above, or I can swap pistons in some NA blocks I have to end up with the same thing. Glad Mr Fuji made the NA bottom end the same specs as the turbo models (excluding STi’s)!

Cheers

@El_Freddo Thanks, Bennie. I will have to pull the instrument nacelle out and find out what I need. I have a whole lot of these bulb holders from the old instrument nacelle out of my Impreza. They might be the same, but who knows?

They might be the same, but who knows?

Probably. I can’t remember what my L series has exactly, I know they share the larger T10 (from memory) globes.
And it’s Subaru, they probably used the same items, they’re probably an industry standard too.

Cheers

What engine is the one pictured, EJ22, EJ25 ? I don't think it will help changing the rings nor the pistons if the cylinders are ovalized, better find a healthy short bloc. You were probably burning oil too....weren't you ?

EJ205. No visible oil burn when engine running unless it was a number of weeks since it was last fired up (blue puff on start up but cleared quickly). No miss etc.

But I never saw it in boost - this came in a GT foz that a kangaroo tried making love to. Both came out pretty bad, the kangaroo worst off.

Finally dropped the XT off at the exhaust shop to have a new muffler tucked up nice and high in the Subaxtreme Rear Bar, it's been on my list for the last 1 and a half years since I got the XT. The Stock muffler with the Rear Bar hangs down disgustingly low!

Also scored a cheap set of Brand New STI Tail lights a few months back, which cleans up the look of the rear end, instead of the standard chrome tail lights.

Not Subaru related, "but", last night I checked my windscreen washer bottle on the new HRV. It has been dusty and wet on the odd occasion, so we have been using the windscreen washer & wipers a fair bit.
While I was at it I had a bo peep at the radiator overflow bottle, damn, the bloody thing goes down to near the bottom off the radiator and i had to use an LED torch to see the Min - Max marks, still couldn't see any fluid either.
I thought to myself bugger it, open the radiator and have a look at the level in there, "holy crap", nothing to see and the neck was bone dry. Ok!, I go RTFM and it states that you have to use Honda's anti-freeze pre-mix and no tap water. So I took the cap off the overflow bottle, took a big breath and started blowing to see if I could blow something back into the radiator, until I could get to the Dealership and get it checked over, it worked.

Now I have to book it into Honda to get them to find out why this is happening on a brand new 2 month old car.:mad::mad::mad:
