What have you done to your car today?

Thanks for the info Ratbag, it's muchly appreciated

My mechanic took it for a quick drive, heard & felt the sounds almost straight away (driveway & entrance actually)

He threw it up on a hoist, looked & checked it over for about 30-40 mins or so & couldn't pin point the exact problem

He said the CV's are fine. So it's not them :)
It's not a wheel bearing either by the looks of it :)
Neither is it a shock/strut that's busted :)

He did suggest it could be (& probably) one or both of me front sway bar links :iconwink:
One other thing he did say was that the front end is very sound etc
Which was great news & to hear :raz:

So tomorrow morning I'll pull the front link(s) off to see if thats what's causing the sounds.

Mr Turbo

No worries mate. Glad it was helpful to you, even if only indirectly.

That is very good to hear.
These noises often come from somewhere that is completely counter-intuitive; and not from where they appear to be coming from, IME ...

My old Wolseley had squeaks that were obviously coming from the front suspension. When I replaced the rear leaf spring separators, the noisy front suspension suddenly fell silent ... :iconwink:

I meant to also say this in my earlier post too Barry :o
Lucky you had it checked & found out about in now mate.
Otherwise, the consequences could've been disastrous.

Thanks Nachaluva :)
Yes, hopefully it's an easy (& cheap) fix & just the new, fancy sway bar links I put on a little while back :o

I should know in a couple of hours though :iconwink:
Just have to wait for the sun to wake up so I can see what I'm doing
It's a little too dark to do at the moment (4.30am) if you know what I mean :p

I remember reading when you changed your end-links. I wonder if it is them causing it...

With the skidpan event on tomorrow, it was time to put my race wheel & tyre package on, adjust the shocks to full hard, give it some UEC and fuel additive and finally change the oil and filter. Last time I did this I installed one of the Fumoto oil change valves. So today was the first time I have used it. Like any brilliant thing, you wished you had one years ago. Probably not ideal for an off road car, it was such an easy, mess free way of draining the oil.

Non-serviceable wheelbearings on a car designed for going off the bitumen...:puke:

Yeah I understand what you're saying, but really it's great to have the units as whole replacement items. And they're a much better design than the L series, front and rear!

If you were really into serious long term soloing you would have the tools on hand to do the job on the side of the road. I did my mate's foz but couldn't get the casing out, needed a bearing puller or the like.

And your wheel wouldn't fall off, you'd damage the hub where the oil seal runs in the worst case scenario. To drop the wheel off you'd have to snap the drive shaft's axle that's in the hub. The EJ's have a much better hub design all round IMO.

Cheers

Quite right, Bennie.

Trailer axles/bearings are a lot less complicated than those on most cars, but the only way a wheel can fall off is if one of the roller bearings breaks the cage and seizes end-on to direction of rotation.

As Bennie said, this will cause the stub axle to shear off.
I had it happen on a tandem horse float once ... :(

You would normally notice that something was wrong a fair while before this happened ...

Funny you should ask that. Its one of the first things the guy behind the desk (at mechanics) asked me.
Do you have the "Whitelines" :rolleyessarcastic:

I didn't get a chance to pull them off & check them today due to the weather :puke: as it's been wet & raining for most of the day :yell:

With a bit of luck, the weather will be more kind tomorrow & I can do it then.

I know what you mean, mate.
I have done altogether too much work in miserable conditions. Not up to it at all these days.
Fortunately it was not raining this morning when I had to go for a grovel under the new Fox.
Just occurred to me, they could have offered to put it up on a hoist for me ... :(
Probably just didn't occur to them either .

Rust repaired on the roof of the Forester :)
Just needs to be repaired now when I find the time and it isn't raining..

Some nice photos there Taza. More lift is always nice lol :lildevil:

Nice shiny gearbox :monkeydance:

Did you keep the broken teeth as souvenirs? lol

I think living with "The Doctor" makes rust a bit of an issue with all the salt in the air. For those overseas, the "Freemantle Doctor" is the nickname for the seabreeze that sweeps in virtually every afternoon in W.A. It helps keep the temps down but also brings moisture and salt...and rust! :(

Nice photos Taza. Good work on the rust!

New car syndrome is still present after 2 weeks with the Skoda, so it had it's first bath today - given Sydney's weather lately, it definitely needed it. I also took it to fill it up - fun to watch people concerned that I'm going to put the wrong fuel in it when I pull up beside the diesel pump :rotfl:

Yep sure will be.

Nice shiny gearbox :monkeydance:
Yes it is. I pu the wrong oil in thought that is like honey. It's good but really really thick. When the box is cold it is almost impossible to shift gears, when it warms up its nice and smooth though :raspberry:

Yep have them sitting on my desk right now :iconwink:

It's a killer alright! Its gone now from there and that's the only spot on the whole car other than some very very light surface rust on the towbar and some underside parts of the car.

Swapped the battery out of the Camry into Roo2

Gidday Folks

Just swapped the almost brand new Bosch battery out of the Camry into Roo2 (same model/rating), and put the perfectly good but lot older Century battery from Roo2 into the Camry this morning. Lost my trip odometer settings in Roo2 ... :(.

Also discovered how easy it is to put some aluminium mesh in front of the radiator in Roo2 for travelling in the country.
I think all modern cars are clipped together - not too many bolts in evidence!

The Camry goes to the dealer this coming Thursday when we pick up RonnyRoo.

Maybe you should change the oil to the right kind immediately, mate.

Running with the wrong grade could (will?) void your warranty, I would think.

Glad you got rid of the rust spot.
I had to have mine cut out of Roo1 and new steel welded in in about 6 spots around the windscreen. Cost about a grand with the re-spray of bonnet and roof.

It is the right grade of oil, the right GPI (GPI 5 I think it is), it's just 90W rather than 70 so it's real thick. A $120 for the oil I don't really want to waste it otherwise I would.
The warranty for the box I only 6months or 12,000km, which ever comes first.

I need to fix the rear wheel bearing first and get the engine sorted as it's now burning through 3L in 1000km!

Yeah I'm glad I got rid of the rust, if it's not completely gone atleast it shouldn't come back for 5 years or so.
