What have you done to your car today?

Fitted a set of Wal-Mart's finest $45 Pioneer TS-G1643R speakers to the front doors today. Good God have they shown up how awful the 13-year-old stock ones were (one of which was mostly dead anyway). Really should have changed those out a few months ago when I did the stereo - I know better, but decided to take care of it later, which evidently turned out to mean 'today'. Probably do the rears in a couple of weeks; I'd like to fit a matched set of 4" speakers back there but local retailers don't carry them.

Oh, and today marked getting 300 of the 500 break-in miles (no driving over 4000rpm) out of the way on the rebuilt engine. Remanufactured shortblock and heads; pretty much all that really remains of the old one on it is the intake. It was actually pleasantly odd to check the oil level this morning and realise that everything that was meant to be in there was in there - by the time the old engine was absolutely classified as shot, it was going through about half the sump in 300 miles or so...

I had these in my car with the Pioneer 4" ones in the rear, they were great speakers.
Went really well even when powered with a seperate amplifer for what they are.

I then upgraded and am really happen now with my 80rms ones. But next car I will get ones over 100rms  (yes I like my music real loud like all P-Platers!)

Got to Perth fine today:) Was a long 7 hour drive petty much straight so im fairly tied.

Picked up the superchargers, haven't even looked at them. Due to my luck I got pulled over by highway patrol cops while overtaking a car.....

As the cop said "We are usually lenient when cars overtake others as its not really possible to do it at 110km/hr to 112. But because you were doing 129km/hr im going to have to give you a ticket" :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:
So theres another few hundred bucks down the drain :yell:
But anyway s**t happens.

Glad you made it safely mate.
Never forget that long drives will always be hazardous, as it is very easy to allow one's attention to wander, and not see that copper sitting behind a bush ... :iconwink:; or the B-Double coming towards one ... .

Sorry you got nicked. That's a bugger.

But be grateful for one thing.
In Victoria 129 km/h earns one a mandatory licence suspension; and if a P Plater, cancellation, IIRC. I would need to check the current Victorian Road Rules legislation to be certain.
Here is part of the story:
https://www.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/...m=0&synonyms=0&query=mandatory and suspension

An interesting point in law would be that the speed limit on the "wrong" side of the road is (say) 100 km/h in the opposite direction. One would need to be going backwards to achieve that when passing. I'll bet it has never been argued in court; at least not successfully!! :rotfl:.

Now for the really, REALLY, REALLY hard part - your University studies! All the best with them mate. I can give you some tips, if you like. I must have learned something about that system in the 25+ years I was embedded in it ...

Ahhh Wal Mart, one of my most loved things of America and truly the pinnacle of it's cultural advancement.... how I miss having the choice of buying a tent, suitcase, engine oil or Plasma TV at 2am.

Also the car audio in America is at the prices it should be (especially the 2nd hand stuff) You can make any car a thumpin' doof doof mobile on any budget.

Can anyone tell me how to fit my 15" Tannoy Monitor Gold speakers into my Fox?
Preferably without damaging my rear suspension ...

Geez Ratbag, next thing you'll crossing to the dark side & be wanting to know how to lower your Fox :rotfl:

As for me, I changed the oil in dad's little yoto, aswell as changed a tyre & fixed his wipers too :) (well I did use my Forry to go & buy the oil etc if that counts :iconwink:)

With my Forry, I added one of those perfume spiders to my front mirror, changed the rubber valve caps & put some nice alloy ones on, after I checked the tyre pressures ;)
Then to finish up, I added an Aussie theme to the door mirrors aswell :raz:

Nah, mate. BUT it does look as if a set of Yoki AT-s are in my immediate future.

My 7x4 trailer is dead.
Well, it certainly needs lots of welding and love and attention that can be done for cheap by a handy chap with a welder anyway.
Having it done for me would cost more than the price of a new 6x4 trailer built to spec with 16" Forester steel rims. A mere matter of my finding some rims at the right price. Buy a 16" alloy rim for a spare. Transfer the Pirellis over to the trailer. Swap the (unused) OEM spare over to the new alloy rim, and use my existing steel spare rim as the trailer spare, with another of the Pirellis on it.

Thus I will need a new set of tyres for Roo2. I looked at dropping the rim size to 15" (doable??), and planting a set of 205/70 x 15 Bridgestone D694 LT tyres on it, but that worked out to something over $2,200 ... The Bridgestones look like a good tyre for off-road use:
https://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/treads/d694.aspx

Shame we can't get anything like this in 16" that's legal, or will fit.

So it looks as if the nearest I can get is the AT-s; and talk the shop into doing the other change overs for me in the price ...

Hmmmm ... maybe :shake:.
BUT then again, a good deed probably qualifies .

I need to buy a swag of decent valve caps. I note that the WA Police recommend chucking plastic valve caps in the recycling bin, as they are all but completely bloody useless!

BTW, I haven't heard anything back from them as yet.

Then to finish up, I added an Aussie theme to the door mirrors aswell :raz:

Piccies?
I am curious ... :iconwink:

BTW, can you (or anyone) see the piccies in this link?

Taza, sorry to hear of the ticket, bit of a bugger. As RB said, good thing you werent in Vic! Glad you made it to Perth OK ;)

More like Twelve Fantasias for Flute Solo by Telemann, mate :iconwink: ... But I don't mind almost any music, as long as it is not distorted beyond all recognition.

The Tannoys will blow out a candle placed a foot in front of them with any of Cecilia, Bach's Toccata in D (organ), or Orff's Carmina Burana. Without distortion .... 2.5 inch cone excursion ...

BTW, looks like I will be going the AT-s route for tyres ...

Instead of the usual flags that you see attached to the windows, I got these mirror covers instead

No mate I can't unfortunately :sadbanana:
The link throws me (not sure about others ?) to a login page, asking for a user name & password etc. However there doesn't seem to be a way to join up & get one etc

Good, in one way.
No one is allowed to join, or login to the site ... If you are interested as to why, we can discuss it in private.

Bad, in that I will have to explicitly post images from there to here.

I found his Toccata in E minor was a little more full than the more popular Dmin... maybe you should try that... That or the Dies Irae from Mozart's Requiem is always a good speaker workout...

Yeah . Love the Requiem. Haven't listened to it for far too long.

Buying speakers that will handle the primary frequency of a wind organ is a bit problematic for most of us ... Tannoy do make them - at a price.

My Monitor Golds have a bandpass filter that prevents them trying to reproduce anything below 18 c/s. Their Westminster Royales cost more than my car (new), but will reproduce 16 c/s. Only about double the price of mine; and I couldn't realistically justify spending the money on them these days either. They have given me a great deal of pleasure over the 40 years I have owned them, however ....

good to hear mate, you wont regret it ;)

Moving to 15" D694 LTs looked promising, until I worked out the costs associated with that move :(.

Today I picked up an alloy rim that matches my others for $195 bare. Looks to be in pretty good condition. Cleaned the redbacks out of it before I get my current spare swapped over to it, probably tomorrow.

The bare rim weighs 8.0 kgs.
The current brand new spare tyre plus steel rim weighs 20.0 kgs.
It will be interesting to see what the alloy rim weighs with that tyre on it.

Now you just need a SubaXtreme rear carrier to mount it Ratbag! :monkeydance:

It should be identical in size to the existing 215/60x16 wheel and tyre. So should fit in the wheel well in the boot.

The existing steelie will become the spare for the trailer I am in the process of specifying (6x4 h/d box trailer, with 16" Subie rims). I plan to mount the spare forward of the axle, with a toolbox on the opposite side. Fuel and water jerry can holders to the rear of the axle on either side. Should provide balance, without excessive draw bar weight.

9 Kg gas bottle on the draw bar.
Maybe a storage box for a 3-way fridge on the drawbar as well.

Heavy duty dolly wheel.
Stands at the back.

I am having trouble finding someone to manufacture a hinged steel lid for the trailer. Not a tradies type, just a (relatively) flat lockable and removable lid that overlaps the front & rear gates, effectively locking them also.

I think I have just worked out how to make one myself and retrofit. One made from marine ply, aluminium angle, masonry expansion joint plastic and heavy duty garden gate hinges/lock plates ... :). It could even be hinged down the middle for ease of access, then using door sealing gasket for weatherproofing.

There will be a storage basket bolted to the top cover of the trailer, for those awkward things, like an extra tyre and stuff.

Any thoughts on this welcome :iconwink: :poke:

I once checked out of a Wal-Mart at 10pm with nothing but a roll of gaffer's tape, folding shovel, balaclava, and 12-gauge shotgun shells to see what the person on the register would do. She didn't even bat an eyelid. Strangely enough, these were all items I actually needed for one reason or another - it was just one of those things where I realised what it would look like, so decided to have some fun with them

Ehh, I'm more in the category of caring about being able to hear the radio at 80mph with all of the windows down than going for being heard a quarter-mile off. Not attracting too much attention is fine by me, though I do miss the amp I had in the last Jeep; that was almost enough to make me want to install one in all of my future vehicles.

Today's round of fun and games is tracking down the metallic popping sound coming from the front passenger side on certain right turns. I'm suspecting something either strut- or ball joint-related on this one.
