What have you done to your car today?

Wow! That must've been really steep to require 4K revs in first!

I'm happy that my Triton does not have a DPF
Yes it was. What did cause that was I was in 2nd happily going up the hill at a reasonable clip when a couple of kangaroos appeared on the road sides about 1/2 of the way up so I slowed down and lost momentum which, in turn, meant dropping down a gear. I suspect that the van would have made it in 2nd, without the roos, but 1st was a more secure bet. It was struggling in 2nd at the lower speed but holding 4000 revs well in 1st. Just happy I did not require a standing start. That would have been tricky at best.

Keep it! The Subaru service manual does not mention any service on the pdf required (or unless I missed it), but the consumption was getting worse and the dpf light flashed more frequent. I googled it and apparently non commercial dpfs are expected to last about 240k kms to either being replaced or cleaned and mine was right on 240k kms. Actually it started to show issue well before it but I can't remember when as I didn't know about dpf much. It was 95% ash accumulated and ash cannot be burned. Luckily it can be cleaned and if it lasted for another 250k kms or more, I'll be very happy.

Installed a set of roof racks and a Ultra Gauge that plugs directly in to the obd2 port. I set the gauge to show coolant Temperature, engine load and I was also wanting to see oil Temperature as well but it does not show up so I will need to see if it can be done on the SH forester.

Also installed a set of roof racks, and my Weather shields arrived today so will hopefully put them on this weekend.

Upgraded the Forester factory 6 CD stacker radio to a modern one with wireless Android Auto - still working on the reverse camera though.

Mine in my MY03 lasted for about 6 years before dying. I replaced it with a single CD player which is still working. The 6 stacker was great for long journeys and received a lot of use but did not enjoy rough roads.

My Forester is quite "thirsty" in terms of engine oil. Poured in 400 ml 4-5 weeks ago, and had to pour in another 400 ml Friday just passed. Coolant not milky, no oil on the ground. Spark plug sockets still dry. My son is learning driving it, will see how it goes.

Rings shot?

Wipe your finger around the inside of the exhaust pipe.
I'll bet it's oily ... :( .

Also, what brand and grade of oil are you using?

Mine appears to leak more than it burns. Seems mostly from rear main engine oil seal. Another can of oil seal repair seems to remedy.
Brand? I might try that with SWMBO's SH with its very slight head gasket leak - 0.5L approx. every 8-10K.

A tricky question to give a direct answer to because I buy the one, when needed, that is on special at the time. I work on the supposition that the active ingredient will probably be much the same in each brand and do a Doctor Google search for comments. They are usually about $20 when on special. I am suspicious of "SupaCrap" home brands but if the shop and brand is reputable then I will use that one. So far all I have tried, over about the last 50000 kms, have been successful. As I change oil and filter every 6000kms I use about two bottles a year. It takes about 400/500 kms to notice the leak stopping, which I guess depends upon leak volume. Current addition is branded "LiquiMoly Engine Oil Resealer 300 mls". Whether it would assist a gasket leak I know not.

I'm using Castrol EDGE Engine Oil - 5W-30, A3/B4 and was ok. I used one bottle of Penrite HPR 5 and the car didn't feel right at all. I replaced the oil fully back to Castrol but the car has been thirsty with oil since. Will try the exhaust pipe test tomorrow.
