What have you done to your car today?

El Freddo, what does it take to install cruise control?

Kinda missing it on long drives, wondering if I can diy something or have to get a 2nd hand unit from the wreckers?

Have a read here.

I use the AP60 aftermarket kit and swear by it ;) This is my third install of this kit.

Cheers

Bennie

Cheers! Will look into that, altho that AP60 seems hard to get over here in the netherlands, probably cheaper to find one at the wreckers, thanks anyways ;)

'Ridge' came of age last week....he ticked over the big 200,000km! That's 130,000km with me behind the wheel.

I gave him a Subaxtreme sump guard for his birthday.

Now for the sad bit, I found oil leaking from the block. This probably explains why I've been smelling something burning lately as it's dripping directly onto the hot turbo exhaust. I hope it doesn't start a fire.

Fitted my road tyres and rims as I figured I won't be going off roading for the next month. Fitted the new Cibie Oscar spot and spread beam driving lights. Just got to aim them properly. Was going to do that tonight but had to take the dog to the 24 hour vet and leave her there :(

Tweaksta,
Try Supa Cheeps.... Oil seal leak stopping gunk.
Seems to work for my oil leak at rear of motor, assuming it is coming from the rear seal.
Don`t know for how long though. I put a bottle in about a month and 2000 kms ago.
No more smell of noxious fumes......worth it for that alone.

Oil seal leak stopping gunk.
Those products usually contain an ingredient that causes neoprene to swell - which is how they get their result. They work for a while but not real long term, and need to be reapplied whenever you do an oil change of course.

Top product to get a leaky past a RWC, or to flog to a dealer ....

Washed the dirty little thing and dropped it off at the mechanic to work on it and get it serviced tomorrow, as well as changing the diff oils. Thinking that I won't have to go to the milkbar to get a milkshake.......
Will sight fitting diff breathers while i'm working on it and fit my brake discs and new pads if there is time.

Thanks RB the dogs okay now, picked up late this avo from the vet. The wallet is $550 lighter :(

Good to hear HC. It's only money! Last trip to the vet with our cats cost around $800+. It was the renal function test that cost the most.

Passenger side headlight got broken by a rock last week and within a day the low beam xenon wasn't working either after moisture got in. Been quoted $1300 for the part + fitting and only genuine ones available with a 3 week wait from Japan. Has anyone else had this experience?

Tried a subaru wreckers? headlights are pretty easy to fit.

Try ebay or rockauto.com

It's an XT with the xenon low beam set up and I'm being told that the only replacement made is the genuine one and wreckers have already been tried and none available. I've decided to do it as an insurance claim at the cost of the $600 excess. I can live with that. Still stunned at how much a genuine headlight costs though. And the 3 week wait.

Cleaned and washed the Foz inside and outside, chassis and engine to get all the sahara sand out…took me 3 hours !

The high price doesn`t surprise me but that does seem a tad excessive.
Even for Subaru.
Now have the exact numbers:
part no. 84002SA091 $1236.50 + GST
fitting $160 + GST
Total $1536.50
I'm only paying the $600 insurance excess. The assessor said it should only be a 45 minute job so there will be discussions between them and the repairer. He also said the repairer would only be paying about 60% of the retail cost for the part. is there really that much mark up on parts?

I don`t know how local auto suppliers calculate their prices, and profits, apart from simple greed, but my experience with obtaining parts from Subaru Parts Girl in the US would imply, that even with postage, the OZ price is about twice the US price for the genuine Subaru part.
If the fitting price is $160 for about 45 minutes work that`s not a bad hourly rate at all........for the workshop that is, not for you. Obviously a case of paying for knowledge, not time.
