What have you done to your car today?

Hi Ratbag and Kevin,
yep these are polycarbonate lenses.
the new globes are still rated at 55w, checked with the multimeter and found only a slight amperage increase over standard bulbs (~ +0.2A) so no additional risk of melting things
according to high school physics, same power draw and increased visible light should mean reduced heat (I.e. a more efficient globe)
that said, it's probably putting out more light above visible range, which is what causes the UV damage to the headlights, so it's something I'll keep an eye on.

The overwhelming proportion of UV hitting your headlights' polycarbonate comes from that bright light in the sky. I personally wouldn't get concerned about the amount that may be emitted by the bulbs ...

^ my thoughts exactly, but worth looking at since my headlights have zero UV damage so far and I'd like to try and keep it that way for as long as possible

I agree with Zippo.

It's the heat build up within the headlight assembly that's always been the worry, not UV.
You will be fine if the bulbs are drawing ~ the same current. As you have already said, it must be an efficiency thing.

As Kevin has said (and so have I), it's all too easy to fry the non-thermoset plastic bulb connector at the rear. My Impreza did that, so I promptly chopped them both off and replaced them with some after-market thermoset plastic ones. Never had a problem after that (the Impreza had glass lenses).

Well that actually yesterday at Bunyip on Bullock Link tract

Today I put in new front axles took me an hour to do both which I thought was pretty good

Spent my lunch break trying to find some one to fit a 3" turboback exhaust to my Jackaroo before the 21'st, no.luck yet :-(

Flushed the power steering fluid and replaced with fresh fluid. All groans and other noises from steering pump have disappeared and the steering feels great. Best of all, a real cheap, quick fix with very noticeable results

That's a job well done then, Mike ....

Good result. Very satisfying.

Not a good start to Christmas. One of my clan struck the rear tray of a Toyota Land Cruiser. in my 2004 Foz :surprised:
Looks pretty ugly !

We were able to pull the bull bar back upright so it did not rub on the tyre.

Yesterday the bonnet, front guard, grille, bull bar etc was stripped off the car. Luckily there is no subframe damage. The insurers have agreed to repair the car.
Sadly due to the business Christmas shut down here I wont get it back until the end of January.
Could have been worse !!

^ Rotten bad luck there, HC ... :(.

I once had a Fairlane run up the bum of my '68 LC deep well ute. I couldn't see where he had hit me, but it took the top off his radiator and engine ... Lovely bloke. All he could think of was if he had damaged my old wreck of a LC!

Thanks Taza and RB. Davidov you have asked a good question!
The insurer has accepted the claim on the basis of a new bull bar. I thought they would want it repaired. Unfortunately the bull bar manufacturer does not reopen until 12 January and will take around 3 weeks to deliver a new bar. The damage to the existing bar is mainly the bent right hand hoop. If the repairer is going to dump it I want to try and get hold of it. In regard to the rest of the car the bonnet, front guard and headlight are being replaced and some minor damage to the inner guard around the headlight is being straightened.
I still retain my rating one but have to pay the excess of $650.
The outcome could have been a lot worse !

Picked up a set of WRC series special License Plates for the GreenSheep!
So happy with these, was really wanting AWD-WRC, but couldn't find out who owned them or if they were selling.
Big thanks to Stilson for tracking them down and offering them to me!
BE9-WRC was going to be my next best plate but I don't need to worry about that now!

Also purchased and installed a set of RokBlox mudflaps recently. Perfect and easy fit, look and feel tough, they're not flappy and haven't had any marks from scraping as yet...time will tell.

havachat, that sucks about your Foz. Glad they're replacing the bar though.

TR, nice plates!

My starter motor has progressively been getting worse, so I went to the wrecker to get a new one, from a '98 auto. Found a nice one, looks good condition, the gear moves very nicely. Went to fit it, wrong size!

So I used poured shellite inside the old one to clean, works well most of the time now. Have to chase down another one though.

Starter motor for sale! $40

HC, bummer about your foz, at least no one was hurt. Sounds like your insurer is coming to the party, so all good mate. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone well over Christmas and the festive period, and thanks for contributing to this important resource of info. drive safely.
Best Regards
Mike

Congrats on getting the great plates for the GreenSheep, Tom  .

Nice Xmas present to yourself, and very kind of ST to do that for you. Hardly surprising though - he's that kind of person ... :).

You will have to start a build thread for the GS.

Happy and safe Christmas and New Year to you and yours.

Yesterday I installed a snorkel on my jackaroo. It was very painful cutting up perfectly fine panels!

Well done, Twink.

I know that feeling. I certainly don't think I would be brave enough to do that on anything newer than 'old' ... If you get my drift!
