What have you done to your car today?

Picked up my 2004 Forester from the crash repairer (see my post 24 December), front guard, headlight and bonnet have been replaced. Really pleased with the paint job. The repairer refitted the bent bullbar as the replacement bullbar will not be available till the end of January. Surprised how quickly the repair was turned around.

Sadly not a good start to 2015. Hit a large male Kangaroo in my wife's SH today :(
At 2 pm you don't expect to be on the look out for Roos although I do often see them. Bent the drivers side front guard and broke the headlight protector but not the headlight. Bounced off the drivers door and left a muddy paw print on the door! He disappeared into the bush so hopefully the big fella is okay.
The car can be repaired and the wife hasn't killed me (yet) !!
On a brighter note filled up the 2002 XS after driving to Lorne and back for my 28th Pier to Pub swim on Saturday and after 600 plus Kms used 8.75 ltr per 100km.

Geez, HC

Are you being accident prone as your New Year's resolution?

That's a real bugger, mate.

Like you, I hope the roo is OK. They're pretty tough IME.

Havachat.... Things come in threes. Find a bottle, go outside and break it and hopefully this will be the end of your bad run.

Best regards,

Sorry about your Foz, will you make a claim or fix yourself?

Could you please call Wildlife Vic & tell them where you hit the kangaroo? He needs to be found as he will almost certainly have injuries. Roos can hop away even with 2 broken legs so you cant go on appearances :(

Very sorry to hear about your run of bad luck havachat!! I hope it is repaired quickly for you!

I am so happy to see such concern from you NachaLuva (I guess your name tells it all!) it is so good to see people standing up for the animals :)

No I am making a claim. Hope to have the damage assessed on Friday.

I did ring the wildlife people but they were unable to offer assistance as he had disappeared into the bush. My daughter had a look for him but could not find him  If he was on the roadside they would have sent someone out.

We hit a rather large deer as we came out of Zion National Park in Utah. Disabled both the deer and the Avis rental. The nearest phone was at a local indian "reservation" (Village of Many Nations) where we called Avis (who sent out a replacement car without drama - no reports, nada, zip). When we asked the local indian guy-in-charge what to do about the deer, he said "don't report it or you'll be buried in paperwork." Then to his offsider "venison tonight!"

Yep, the locals were definitely looking forward to their evening feast. Avis were brilliant - asked about how we were, then whether the car was kaput, then said "another is on the way". Took 4 hours as the short way - through the park - was not usable as anything more than a car required an escort through the tunnels and they finished at 5pm, so it was the long way around. Dropped new vehicle off the tilt-tray, started the motor for us to warm it up (it was -2C then), winched the dead one on, gave us the replacement contract and disappeared into the night. Can't praise Avis and their contractor enough for that.

It is quite an experience hitting such a large animal doing full tilt (the deer, we were doing aroung 80kph).

Still diagnosing my driveline issues and decided to remove and inspect my tailshaft uni's. First uni at the yoke was definitely a bit rough. When I tried to knock it apart a big cloud of rusty red dust came out which was kinda funny.

I'd also had issues in the past finding replacement uni's because this is a custom shaft and I couldn't remember what it used. Measured by size it is a Datsun uni joint and I bought 2 so now I have one spare in the car.

Made no difference to my driveline issues but good to have it sorted.

^^ & ^

Both good things to have done, JF and V.

Now that you know the right size, V, write it in your OM or other vehicle log book. Not the sort of thing you want to forget! Same goes for any other nonstandard parts.

Venom, I haven't seen unis like that since my (early) days working on (early) Holdens.

You realise that you can get unis with grease nipples which avoids the rust buildup, which in turn destroys the machined surfaces under pressure. You only need to grease them with a hand-gun to avoid blowing the seals to smithereens.

Yeah they are actually an old Datsun uni. These are a greasable uni, I suspect a very long time on the shelf had hardened the pre-packed grease and blocked the grease passages. I have vague memories of hard blobs of grease coming out of the seals on this or another one... these got replaced mid-trip in remote Vic after 2 maybe 3 days down-time, so the priority was just to get the car on the road at the time.
