What have you done to your car today?

Sounds great :) You'll have to post a pic of the before & after Biesel.

Ended up taking the heads off with the motor in the boot, then I was just able to lift to lift it out :iconwink:
BTW don't pull down a motor with it in a car when there is still oil in it!! Made the biggest mess everywhere, the whole 4L of oil on/ in my car and all over the floor :(

Haven't done anything, just waiting for my rear diff locker...

i also wanted to do my rear diff oil as i have never done, but i couldnt get the plugs undone. any tips??? they are f'n tight and there isnt a lot of room under there for a breaker bar (i dont have ramps)

If you use a ring spanner instead of a socket or open-end spanner, you can apply more force without risk of damaging the plug. You can also slip a bit of water pipe over it for extra leverage, if necessary.

While I have used the water pipe and ring spanner and driving the vehicle forward to get the rear hub nuts loose on VWs (factory spec is around 240 ft. lbs. ... ), I would NOT recommend it for loosening any plug where the thread is into an alloy housing!

BTW, when putting VW rear hub nuts back on, I never tightened them over about 150 ft. lbs., and never had any problems with them!

Torque on the rear diff drain plug is specified as 49Nm (36 ft-lb), which is only about half that of a wheel nut.

Well mentioned. As I have discovered (the hard way, as usual ... :( ), it is very important not to over-torque anything going into an alloy anything ...

I HAD a Warren and Brown inch lb' torque wrench for doing my VW clutch... something else that went with the tool box in the front box on the camper... :'(

I remember the same thing happening (unable to loosen plugs) when I wanted to do mine once before :madred:
I tried the breaker bar & that didn't work either :yell: even with it up on ramps:furious: I nearly pulled the car off the ramps & onto my self with the force I used :surprised:
I ended going to the dealer to get them to do it & they had trouble too :lol:

They asked me who the :censored: did it up last ?? My simple answer was they did :poke:
That shut them up real quick :lildevil:
Anyway they ended up changing the diff oil for free :banana:

As for what I did to mine today... I replaced the rego sticker as it was due for renewal (passed with flying colours :biggrin:)
Now I'm good for another 12mth's :quitar:

I had the same thing with my bottom diff plug a couple of weeks ago, as couldn't get enough clearance to use a breaker bar with car on the ground. Once I had the back an extra foot off the ground, using what seemed like very gentle pressure it came undone easily. I am guessing that would have been the 2nd time it had the diff oil changed.

My diff is covered in oil & there's a rumbling sound coming from that area...guess I'll be finding out soon how tight my plugs are :eek:
 
I had to jump start Swifty to take her to her final resting place - Subaru Heaven. I drove her 50kms across town... it wasn't long before I started to feel the thrill of the open road & the longing to stretch her legs. It was her last trip with me.. and... true to her normal form, after about 20kms her battery was re-charged and she is all set for her new life teaching a young bloke how to drive in a paddock. Life was fantastic today :-)
 
Drove a 2002 H6 Outback Auto today. Man was I very disappointed in the performance, the auto is a HUGE letdown for it. I reckon in a manual it'd be a beast, however once it got into the right gear or from a stand still it went like a little blue rocket.
 
Rear diff blew up finally. The whining went on for 2-3 months, then she gave up last night.
Oh well, time to source a new rear diff...

Pulled it out at 6am on a Sunday morning :(

Half of one of the spider gears was had it's teeth snapped off. Damn offroading :(

Took just over an hour to get out, not bad considering I've never pulled out a diff before..

Any picture of the spider gear ? Or of the inside of the diff ?
 
Dropped the pan on Rusty, found out all 3 of my connecting rods bearings are shot :( Now the high compression motor gets dropped in ;)
 
Took the forester into the shop today. I think my plugs or coil pack is dying, had a very (what I can best describe as) lumpy start yesterday, starting it up on a cold dark night and day, lots of misfires and CELs and a cr@ppy drive home. Hopefully I didn't kill the catalytic converter. @$$##

That said, the subaru made me quite happy the day before, making it my cold, steep, slushy dirt road hill to my cottage with all season tires, like a champ. No way a FWD could have made it up that hill, and the forester climbed up it like it was nothing.

Turns out cylinder #4 had a bunch of misfires, and the wire going into it was sparking. Getting them to fix that and swap the spark plugs while they're at it since they're getting close to due. At least out of this I'm getting new plugs installed, I probably would have held off on it later. :P

Got the forester back last night, think I got overcharged a bit but it sure runs smoothly now, even with the crazy wet night we were having.

Also got my OBDII bluetooth reader finally working, and hooked up to my android phone with Torque!
