What factors make Off Road Ability?

most famous in EU 2020 city SUV's AWD test. its hard to test those cars as equals as i think all have traction control systems that engaging on different revs or speed or depends how much you use gas pedal, they not working same for sure so when some cars doing better job there i dont think it says everything. and weirdly how poor subaru worked there without x mode. i mean its still using VDC there , why no braking free wheels like it does even in my car. it looks strange .

@scalman , I discovered that "road tests" were mostly garbage by the time I was about 17 y.o.

Nothing has changed ... :poke:
Haha yes. But then are there any real tests anyway? Or ones that counts. I mean i bought subaru car because i saw impreza mudding in youtube first time and i was blown away how cheap they are. Then i read that they reliable as well and simple to fix older ones.
So its better to just watch real people real world like trips or off road is it?

those lucky russians , lots snow , lots cold , lots fun , even outbacks this time ...and lots other cars not just subarus

that little monster

i just love how simple is to modify those WK/WH with quadra drive 2 to go offroad, just put AT/mud tires and maybe lift it. done.

look how that bentley on 40' non winter just extreme off road tires manages itself on deepest snow. its made with toyota engine i think and patrol hard axles and patrol low gearbox. i mean how much confidence you must have to go to places like that just with 2 cars and one of them is on 33' wheels old gaz 69, other is some monster. thats some winter off road right there. ieman they drove far far away into mountains that noone was drove there before them ... just 2 cars , what if that larger monster got stuck .. ?
and i had that thought that extreme mud tires is not for snow.. well they manage pretty bloody good there. of course aired down to maximum low, bentley was driving on like 0 psi there. thats why it drove.
stil lthat old gaz 69 rebuild but only 33' tires managed so good there too but open top in mountains in snow ... just crazy, i love it
so what that says about off road ability there ? hmm imagine being stuck deep in mountains in snow in car... long way down, you better be prepared for that .

I would love to off-road a Bentley or Roller!

im still amazed how those extreme mud tires can do so good in soft fresh snow there ? is it all power that is going there, like russians now started to make some extreme off road comfy cars out there. imagine how comfy you would be in that bentley even if you got stuck.

snow drag lots different cars on different tires. subaru and audi even too
i wonder what makes drag on snow faster , tires, more power, gearbox manual vs auto or all those things, but some 150hp cars goes faster there then 300hp ones. well for sure too much spinning wheels wont make you anywhere fast
those lada nivas old ones have just some 86hp or smt not even 90.

heard many times in video as he said turn off your esp , meaning all traction control, well to go as fast as you can from stop on snow maybe traction control would do better there as it would try to prevent wheel spin , well all cars different , sure every drivers needs to know their car, but if you went in off road first time on your car what you could know there ? many of those where like that there.

foresters against everyone else on snow
at begining first forester gets up to revs , and then second blue one on mud tires couldnt get up to revs, similar to how my cars doing , maybe first one was manual and that blue was auto on some weak 2.0 engine who knows. but yh i know that feeling very well when revs just dont go up they drop down until car stops. then green 3rd ones went on top, looked like turbo maybe. from exhaust hard to tell
interesting to see how merc 4 matic was working , just its much heavier though sinks faster in sand i guess and not enough speed.

more foresters in snow vs others small and large heavy, so how they compare
very different skills needed on those places then in mud normal off road places. some on winter good tires some on old ones ,some on mud tires, manuals , auto, traction control used or not . depends from driver skills
this guy is very honest and trying to help every driver who lack skills to tell how to better go what gear use , or maybe air down

thats why you need large tires in deep snow and lots power to spin them like on jeep, doesnt even need to be snow tires deep mud extreme tires works too if they spin enough
earlier we had lots those jeeps here localy for sale and older models, now i guess because we have now new TAX for co2 emissions now those old models just gone and those WJ's still there but that TAX is so high to own now those large beasty engines on your car , but i would like to have and make project like this still...but if i wait another couple years we will have all electric 4x4 i guess . no more exhaust sound rev sound just whine of electric power then ...

Electric motors are like steam engines - both develop maximum torque at zero revs. FWIW.

so 2.4 turbo engine with dual xmode how good that combination is on sand. its funny how fast they all forgetting and manufactures wont mention anymore that normaly its VDC that does job there , and xmode only on low speeds, so what you get on higher speeds , well people must know that its still traction control works and VDC works there. but i guess x mode is big name there and thats it .
and why he didint used TC off button , is it not available anymore on those new cars ? i think it should be.
and on that 7:30 about moment at some points when wheels didint do nothing at all there. thats so similar with what i was not happy on mine on similar situations.
so it was not that good in sand or driver was not good enough for sand or too much psi in tires or its all things combine. he said those tires are not good for sand, well they better then more agressive ones would be with full road psi there. still in most times from sound when he was driving it was sounding like that TC wasnt letting revs more up there, like it was having hard time there.
and its turbo yes, i never heard any turbo note there. did they make it sound dull even with turbo ?

I got stuck off a ledge in deep snow at over 2800m in Utah. I was about 40km away from anyone. I'm really lucky I had phone service. A forest ranger took 2hrs to get to me. None of the tow services would even try helping me.
*I have photos I can't attach for some reason. They're too big and there's a link to process them through the server but it's just redirecting me back to the post

Got a resizing app. This was up a good 18% grade. I got stuck and couldn't turn backwards to back up here. Previously, I backed up a good 400m with my front biased AWD. This was about 40cm of fresh snow.

There's a fundamental rule here in Australia - when 'expeditioning' (I.e. on one's own) - don't do anything or go anywhere 'heroic'.

That means where there is a chance, any chance, that you will not be able to self recover, or walk out (very rare here to be able to do that).

We have deaths every year from people ignoring this rule. Worst case was an entire family of six (outback Queensland). This can even occur on what we call major highways (about 30 miles outside Ceduna).

Be careful and sensible. Best to travel in convoy when off the beaten track, even if only two vehicles.

Carry basic recovery gear, and know how to use it safely.

This was an oddball situation. I definitely had some gear but not enough. I needed 15 more feet of straps. I was on the ledge and would have cranked out if I had that 15'. But I was in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation when they couldn't reach. I also had a good 5 days of food for me and my dogs.

There's a Ceduna in Queensland?
