WA crew - End of year get together

Yeah I'll definitely do this January trip, sounds like we'll get quite a large convoy going:)
I think I'll do a smaller trip or two before then, doesn't matter which days (seeing as I'm already on holidays and have got the time:discomonkey:)
But I'll see most of you at the Hills in January.

Been talking to a few people here in Albany ATM about driving out to West Cape Howe (has some amazing beaches, steep inclines, and ruts I'm told) and they don't reckon I will make it, or at least not to try by myself. I reckon early next year (Jan/Feb) we should do a trip out to Albany for a weekend or something, and check out these tracks!! Maybe be a part of this video...

That's a longer trip than I've done before :/
But it does look very good on the internet :Bananacomputer:
And when someone says a Subaru won't make it I love proving them wrong:ebiggrin:
So I definitely am interested in this trip and Jan/Feb are both good for me. I assume we'll be doing this after the Hills trip?

I have heard through my Dad who goes rock climbing and lives in Denmark the track to the cliffs at West Cape Howe is very full on, and he has a SWB vitara from the 90s, IMHO the best soft sand 4x4 to have.
One of the worst or best depending on how you look at it tracks in the area, I have done most tracks to beaches around margaret river surfing and apart from bottoming out a bit think they are easy and would think twice about some tracks in the Albany/Denmark area in a Subi, especially that one, unless with a group.
I will be down that way after christmas if anyone is down that way and wants to go exploring the easier tracks

RedXS - Yeah fairly long trip down, wouldn't be too bad in a convoy, and it's a pretty nice drive down. Definitely keen on a Hills meet-up as I live up that way, so yeah maybe before or after that I guess. As I'm at uni I have until end of Feb free but as others have work that's why I suggested a week-end trip.

GTsurfer - yeah normally I love giving tracks a crack, but Albany is pretty full on in it's geography so I had a gut feeling this was one track I probably should wait to do... Yeah I used to bottom out on the tracks around Margs too, but now have a mild lift, so that's not gonna happen anymore! I will be down in Augusta the first couple weeks of January, so keen to explore.

I speak from experience and I had a v8 land cruised at the time, west cape howe is horrible. Getting in is a very steep dune and its also the only way out. And my landy was running out of power trying to get back up. Its very difficult and you need at least 3 people. There used to be a guy with a tractor who would pull you up for 50 bucks if you called him but don't know if he still dies it or not. Not saying don't do it just be prepared but that's a trip I probably won't be going on :p

Sarge - I'm at uni too, I don't suppose your at UWA?
Blanket + GTsurfer - warnings noted

I know a couple of guys with modified Patrols who may or may not be interested in this trip, if our convoy wants them to come I could ask them.

But I think 8psi and my Maxtrax should get me up most dunes.

I will look into this place more before committing to going but I am very interested at the moment and seeing as it is a long drive wouldn't mind staying a little longer than a weekend if that was alright with our not yet existent convoy.

Come on!! Where's your sense of adventure!

RedXS - nah I'm at the better uni, curtin! I'm real keen to check these tracks out, especially now it sounds like a hard challenge! I'd like to test my foz out on some difficult sand tracks seeing as it's got a mild lift now. Probably should get a bashplate, and I wish I had dual range but that's never stopped me from exploring before. I don't really mind if some patrols come along either... Yeah, I wouldn't mind staying for more than a week too, could even drop into some tracks on the way back up to Perth, just a thought.

Judging by the feedback though, this will probably just end up being a trip that I do with a few mates here in the hills with 4WD's in a couple years time... better late than never I reckon!

But I'm keen on this trip now!

I've read that bornholm beach is one of the hardest sand tracks in Australia, and in the great name of adventure this is something we have to tackle before we get too much more experience. Jan/Feb (depending on when either of us could convince someone else to come) would be perfect otherwise it will be too late!
And I can give you the designs of my DIY sump guards, I made a larger, stronger version of one I found on here.

And finally, Curtin has a Facebook page called "Curtins Crap Parking Awards" At least people at UWA can get a car between two white lines.

Good! Just need a few others to jump on board! I agree, it would be good to give it a crack before getting too old and wise. Just watched a long video of these tracks on youtube, and whilst it looks like you do need some decent clearance, high range should be fine. Yeah Jan/Feb before uni starts again would be good, although I've got a few other things planned, like driving to Tas.

Sump guard sounds good but I wouldn't be able to make one myself, don't have the skills or tools. Thanks for the offer.

Yep, I have seen some pretty funny parking at curtin too! Some people...

Im keen! Though my soob is stock...might have some 14'' wheels on by then but im not sure if thats enough. Id youtube the track to see how hard it is but i dont have hardwired internet where i live so im stuck with expensive portable wifi with not a lot of usage.
ANYWAY. Im always up for wheeling! Especially if its closer to home!

You won't get a subi back up the entrance of bornholm beach if that's the one on west cape howe. But in saying that it will be awesome to see haha. Chains beech has some amazing spots. Great camping to. Just east of albany.

Yes! There's three of us now! Thanks Interceptor!:ebiggrin::ebiggrin:

Blanket - would we have a small chance with 8psi and maxtrax placed half way up the bornholm beach exit, or is it just insanely long, steep and soft?
If not chains beach might be worth a visit, thanks for the info Blanket.

What time would suit theinterceptor?

TI - nice looking wagon you have there! Also, I'm down in Augusta from the 30th to the 10th so keen to explore some tracks around that way if you are!

Here is that video I was talking about, pretty good, shows you what it's all about: [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Dom-ZjCOeU"]West Cape Howe National Park 2013 - YouTube[/ame]

The tracks definitely look pretty challenging, some pretty deep ruts, but there is rubber matting in places. There is one point in the clip where a pathfinder (I think) struggles to get back up from the entrance as it's pretty soft sand and rutted, but he eventually makes it. The guy driving has a 100 series which weigh a fair bit, and he drove the same bit in hi-1st gear.

Yeh the entrance is horrible. We had 2 landys and a poojero and we struggled quite badly. Summer is worse because more people are chopping it up. Are you guys looking at going soon or in a couple of months?

Nice video Sarge,
We may require a bit more momentum to get through some of those sections, but I reckon we'd make it with 3 of us.
And the whole area looks awesome, the beaches were great and there was so much more greenery around the tracks then up at Lancelin areas.
Anytime Jan/Feb is good for me, if we went after feb it would depend which days I have off uni.

Yeah I agree. Same goes for me for the time, I think I am there 5 days a week again though, so maybe might stick to Jan/Feb.

The beaches are awesome! The tracks look fairly narrow too, so might get a new paintjob...

Hahaha I only go in 2 or 3 days a week at uwa, and thats full time doing a double non-arts degrees.
I like my paint job, so I might try and do 2 layers of wax just before I go.
If we're staying a while I'll throw in a couple of surf boards and maybe even the mountain bike if there are places to go down there.
