Which Forester

All 2nd gens do. All SF's do that are Limited model (same as XS) and up. I have a Limited which has ABS and 2x air bags, cuise control, outside temp gauge and all the rest. Only thing it's really missing is climate control and mood roof.

Ripped off! My SF has no ABS, no airbags, no outside temp gauge. It does however have cruise control, armrests and an asthmatic engine

So it's base model(GX) then or Limited?

I had a CD player too (gone now with an awesome stereo that my alternatorcouldn't keep up with ), those fold out arm rests, 3 cup holders(front and another 2 in the rear), pull over cargo blind in the boot, 16 pockets in the car (I still can't find them all), frnot fog lights (suprised they aren't broken from offroad), 2 trip meters... What does your's have?

Yeah base model. GX is it?

No fog lights, the standard cassette player haha. It does have the cargo blind, heaps of pockets but havent counted them lol, has 2 cup holders in the rear (broken from nieces kicking em :( ), one in the centre console and one in the dash. And only one trip meter. Plus ugmo rims that are too far inset for the car, plus are really great at trapping mud to throw em out of balance.

Oh, it also has some custom body work courtesy of hail...and scratches courtesy of bushes :iconwink:

Yep base model is GX.
haha,

Mine has heaps of scratches, needs a good wash and polish!! The rims are a pain, even wet sand gets stuck in them. I will be painting them black again as im sick of silver... again
I really only have dent's on my bonnet, the rest of the car is pretty much dent free bar 3 small car park dings. There is abit of difference then, quite suprising really!

When some extra money of mine comes though I will be getting the rear locker sorted and supercharger finally finished. The front bar will come along too once the L-series is sold. Plus I need to get the front LSD put in sometime...
When I kill my engine I will be putting a turbo engine in, im so over gutless N/A's!

You need to finish fitting your front bar!

ok to start with the lsd in the 2 gen is pathetic. i havnt been able to get both rear wheels to spin yet in my 2gen and i know it has the lsd.
as for the split when selecting 1st and 2nd it locks it into a 60/40 split so not 50 50 but is handy.

and my 1st gen is like taza is the limited so has air bads, and abs but didnt have fog lights and the two tones bumpers

I would definitely be looking more at the latest model possible. I think you will have less problems w the younger model car.

That's exactly what an LSD is supposed to do, prevent you from spinning both wheels ... :iconwink:

The one in my Fox helps to prevent that greatly, almost all the time.

An LSD is meant to transfer power away from a slipping wheel to a wheel that is not slipping. It does this until the slipping wheel stops slipping, then transfers power back to both.

The standard one is only any good onroad and on abit of gravel, nothing more as it isn't strong enough.

i should have been clearer. what i meant was i can only get one wheel to spin, never two, or when offroad does it stop spinning or ever get both spinning. on road it makes it a little more dinamic but not much.

and also i belive the GT has the rear LSD anyway, so the comparison of rear diff makes no difference.

either way the rear lsd is pathetic

Nachaluva: The N/A 2003 is the better choice, IMO. Really a no-brainer.

I recently went through the older XT versus newer N/A deliberation myself (for the second time), and ended up with a second N/A. Turbos are tempting. But the N/A has plenty of power, and as others have pointed out more torque down low which is good for the automatic trans as well as off-roading.

On top of that, MY03 onward will be more spacious than the SF. This will benefit both the human passengers as well as all the carried gear.

Hi NL,

I'd recommend the 03 X also.

Changes between models are usually pretty significant and often even for the better, the change from SF to SG added power, comfort, ground clearance and space without adding weight and is a better looking car IMO.

I'm not a fan of small turbo engines coupled to automatics either, the 2.5 is the way to go in spite of the dreaded HG issues.

Good luck and I hope she's happy with whatever she chooses, I'm sure she will be if it's a Sub.

Had a look at the '99 GT 1st. I immediately noticed a large chunk taken out of the front wheel. An air vent and centre dash pocket were broken, the carpet on the drivers left foot was taped, there were a few minor oil leaks in the engine bay. It had good power but the auto didnt seem to shift properly. Overall, I was glad when Kiri decided she wanted a newer model.

Then the '03 N/A was very nice but lacked a bit of power. It's had the T belts done as 174000km. On the reciept it mentioned:
engine repairs $1300
T belt & water pump kit $740
Total bill nearly $3000

So tomorrow we're off to see a '05 XT, owned by an elderly gentleman & his wifey. It has 160000kms, bit high, but a lot have been to his holiday house in the Grampians so highway kms. Plus being bit older shouldn't have flogged the car lol. It seems he is "keen to sell" lol, so we may be able to get a good deal.

I must be the old fart around here if all you blokes drive faster than me and I reckon the 2.5 has adequate power!:)

Keep looking- you'll find something decent eventually.

Adequate?

ADEQUATE?

Mine goes like a flaming rocket if I care to sink the slipper into it; and pulls like a bull in mating season even when 'lugging' at low revs.

Ready, willing, and able, if you ask me!

Any car that will pull strongly on the flat from 160 km/h in 5th HR can hardly be said to have "adequate" power. Hell, that's already faster than a lot of cars will even go ... :lildevil:. Struth, according to my figuring, it should be good for 170+ km/h even in 4th HR (a tad over 6,000 rpm ... ).

Mine certainly sits the road very well at 160 km/h, even on the Gembrook - Launching Place road, which I would hardly describe as having an ideal surface for speeds of this range ... :iconwink:.

My favorite model is the 04 and 05 for outer looks (I like the agressive front end and the completely red taillights) and the middle (a/c) knobs are , In my opinion, nicer than the older models.

Well, it was Nachaluva that raised the issue of not enough power. For most day to day stuff the NA 2.5 will suffice.

im a young driver and at some stages i notice the lack of power in the 2.5 with the auto, but i just take my time so doesnt bother me.
the xt nachulva will be a lovely car but once again check the insurance and remember if shes a p plater cant drive it in vic!

dont want to throw a spanner in the works, but has she considered the other subi's such as the impreza? still go ok in a bit of light offroad, or an outback. ive driven one and they seem to go better then the forester in my opinion

Or NSW.

Reason 95,256 to get a manual over an auto! Seriously though, if I'd never had a high performance car the manual Forrie would probably impress me power wise. But as an auto I'd probably want a bit more as well
