Rally's MY04 Forrie- Poverty Pack special

Purchased second hand. Rear diff and instrument cluster replaced under warranty. First change was to fit CB UHF GME radio. Car has externally mounted windscreen aerial bracket. Just purchased set of new KYB shock absorbers- the originals have had it- will install when they arrive. Next step is to replace standard steel rims with MY99 WRX rims. Then sump guard and driving lights.

Sitting in the garage ready to go on

I can now let you know that the diffs really do work very well. On rutted uphill corners, I might just as well been going up someone's driveway. It was so easy. On the hard rocky steep ascents, the car was bouncing around but it went up every hill the big 4WD's did. As for the gearing, there were a couple of times when it would have been nice to have shorter gearing, but it certainly did not stop me and it just meant the car stalled. That is in part due to the tune which produces an off idle dead spot. I will try and post a video, but if Kevin reads this he was there and he may wish to make his own observations. Suffice to say that the big Iveco 4WD with mega low range and rear diff lock and heaps pf clearance could not go where I went, and one of the Patrols took 3 goes where I made it up in one. He may not have chosen the best line but that is how it was.

So, if your want your Forrie to really go places, the solution is there and it works.

The diff did not whine, it chattered. The noise seems to come and go- sometimes it is there- though much quieter than at time of installation. Then it goes and you think great, it's gone, only to come back. And it is only the rear diff, not the front. But compared to when it first went in, it is much much better. And it certainly dlivers

Mine has the same flat spot just off of idle, is yours in standard tune? If you find a solution I'd be happy to hear it.

Dave my mechanic has a way of re-tuning the standard ECU, but he is not yet familiar with the software. It is not a priority for him at this stage, but maybe one day we can try some experimenting

On this leg, the Iveco stopped just before the turn at the top. One of the Patrols took 3 goes to get up at that point as well. Picture quality is lousy- anyone got a better idea? Kevin reckoned that would be the worst of it. Not sure I agree, but that is for another video!

Good vid, from what I could tell it didn't seem like you got much of the dreaded diagonal spin..
A vid from outside the car would really show us the terrain. Nice job!

I seem to have spotted a cloud of dust towards the top where the tyres were scrambling for grip. I reckon my open diffs would have stopped me dead!

Glad your front diff is quiet & the rear almost so, they really do seem to transform your Foz! :monkeydance:

Nice vid Rally !

I didn't read the whole thread but have one question...are your diffs helical or clutch ?

Kevin reckoned that would be the worst of it. Not sure I agree, but that is for another video!
Great vid Rally

Looking forward to seeing the other vid when you get a chance to upload it :)

Mr Turbo

Front diff is helical out of an 06 STI 6 speed, rear diff is plated- KAAZ. The problem with videos is that it is difficult to show not only how steep it was, but the size of the rocks etc. Perhaps the best way to appreciate the size of he rocks is to look at the ledge on the left just after the turn

The performance was very impressive indeed! The track was a "hard" rated track; meaning "hard" for normal 4WDs. On that bend (Black Snake Pass) the traction contol light on my Triton was going mental.

This is the next part of the climb. The rocks and ledges were getting pretty big by this stage, and there was no real line you could say was any better than any other. The car stalled going up this hill, as much because of the stupid flat spot as the terrain. Notice how much Kevin's car bobs about before I make my attempt- that should give some clue as to how rough it was. One victim of this climb was the sump guard. It now has 2 huge cracks in it. I remember the grounding that surely would have caused it, but considering how slow I was going, still most disappointing. I have now removed it and I am having a proper one made up from a mob not far from home. Should be ready Friday.

Well done guys

The 2nd vid with all the bouncing about, really shows how long & steep the hill was :surprised:

There was a small problem and somehow the post with the second video has now been deleted. I will re-post it, and a third video as soon as I can.

Thanks to Damo for helping to get the second video up. Here is the third and final stage of the climb.

Waouw ! Thats a nice steep track with big rocks ! I think your camera is just a little low, or the hill too steep !

Any more vids? as someone already said outside vids would probably give a better idea of where the lsds are working? Are you happy with the feel of the car or might you look at swapping out the centre diff as wel??
