Rally's MY04 Forrie- Poverty Pack special

Purchased second hand. Rear diff and instrument cluster replaced under warranty. First change was to fit CB UHF GME radio. Car has externally mounted windscreen aerial bracket. Just purchased set of new KYB shock absorbers- the originals have had it- will install when they arrive. Next step is to replace standard steel rims with MY99 WRX rims. Then sump guard and driving lights.

Yeah but i don't think i could do that too the missus she loves her FOZ. apparently the Cusco diffs alot cost alittle more are alot quieter. I might opt for one of them.
 
I thought I heard the Cusco ones were worse. Maybe I have my wires crossed. Anyway, once it is run into you are welcome to come and suss it out for yourself.
 
How many kms you got on it now? how many more kms does Dave think it will need?
 
About 1000km's. I don't know. I won't be using the car for the next week, so I was not too fussed. I've got to get the front diff installed soon, will worry about it then
 
Cusco make two diffs for the subarus the RS range and the MZ range. the MZ is for motor sport, the RS range has less aggressive clutches and damping springs to make the engagement less aggressive. the MZ require a run process similar to kaaz diffs the RS diffs require no run in and are apparently silent. apparently the springs help with wear as well. meaning as the clutch plates wear the springs help keep the diff operating well. so less on going maintanence.

This is what my research has lead me to understand. the cusco diffs do seem to be $3-400 more though.
 
Thanks for sharing the results of your research with us, Biesel. I don't need any new diffs right this moment. But it's good being aware of the options for when the need and/or want strikes. :lildevil:

NP Mate, I am just awaiting Rally's feedback after some more run in of his kaaz before making any final deicions myself.
 
I've been away in Brisbane for the week, car has not been used. Diff is getting better, still to go back and see Dave. I did put some raised springs in it today, so the next step (after a wheel alignment) is the front diff and working on the rear diff. Last thing will be putting the off road tyres on.
 
Well, I've never used off road tyres before, so having spoken to Kevin and Damo previously, I went for the Yokohama ATS. While they will be no match for the Bridgestone RE002's I'm currently using on tarmac, I'm hoping they will do the job on the slippery stuff.
 
^ Depends how you try and drive. If you drive it like you would with your wrx on the skid pan then of course they'll loose grip.. When I had the Geolander AT-S they were pretty good in the wet except through round abouts where it would understeer badly. I got 50,000km from mine too so I think that's reasonable.
Are you doing any modification to your gearing or low range gearset while to gearbox is apart?
 
No. I've never found the low range gearing to be a problem. And where I'm going should not change that. The weak link with this car is the engine, with the flat spot just off idle that is standard equipment on them. I might see if I can tune that out one day. It's a bit short of grunt and could be a bit more economical considering how slow it is. The WRX uses about the same amount of fuel, maybe a bit more, but not much. As for the tyres, well, you just have to drive within their limitations. I just hope they are not as bad as the Coopers it had on when I bought the car. They were grip proof.
 
Front diff to be installed tomorrow. Let's hope it fits!

Keen to hear how it goes, you can get those STI front diffs pretty cheap from importers.
 
Looking good. Gearbox is apart, front diff appears to fit, but won't know till we go to put it back together and the pre-load needs to be done.
 
Well, how about that! It fits and it works. How good is that! Many thanks to David Dick at A1 Tuning and Performance in Rossmore. There were people out there who were Subaru specialists who said it could not be done, yet Dave has proven that it can be. A few modifications were required, but nothing we could not overcome.
