What have you done to your car today?

^ quite ...

What pisses me off is that the welding was so bad.

What REALLY pisses me off is that I really can't blame anyone but myself.

Want to bet that I have to cut the other one off with the Dremel tool ...

However, I will end up with adjustable fog lights at the end of it.

My SubaXtreme front bar is one of the originals, the Mark I version, and did not have provision for the fog lights so adjustment is not an issue.
I was a tad disappointed when I went up to Maryborough to have it fitted and found this out, more so when the later Mark II version had provision for them.
Not that they do a lot but with the Forester`s crappy normal headlights any extra light made a difference.
Still working out how to fit my new light bar. Already have 3 driving lights, solved lighting problem, so maybe a bit of an overkill..........

^ you just need a metal hole saw and a decent power 240V drill. My old AEG 400W will go through anything, including foot thick steel reinforced concrete with a 1" bit ... Probably need 750W in 'modern' watts ... :poke: :rotfl:.

The hole needs to be slightly larger than the light lens diameter (doh!).

Work out an adjustable mount for the light before you start ... :iconwink:

The dodgy weld ...

How the lights are positioned at present:

How they will sit when modified:

I will drill out the existing bolts and re-tap a slightly larger thread (3/16" W?), and the bolt heads will be at the bottom ...

Turning the holder upside down will require me to put security wire around the two wings where the bolts are, or perhaps a nyloc nut on the top of the bolt threads.

Yes, looks like only partial penetration of the weld, which of course give a notch effect.
Hence a point of weakness.
Unusual for SubaXtreme but everybody has off days.

^ that's being extremely charitable, IMNSHO.

Even I can weld better than that ... :poke:

All in the preparation.

Exactly! It actually takes me longer to prepare the steel for my lift kits than the actual welding lol.

Aluminium welding is a real art, I've worked with a few guys who were very good at it, same with my BIL, my Foz's original owner. There's a fine line between no penetration & a big molten puddle :rotfl:

Ally welding isn't art, its just magic plain and simple. As nachaluva said, its al fine its fine its good, now there's a dirty great big hole in the work.

^ yeah, I understand that. Al doesn't change colour as it approaches melting point.

However, I expect professional welding on a professional product ... it appears that all the other welding is very well done. Another weldor put the fog light brackets on, perhaps?

In any event, it should never have got past quality contol, if there was any ....

It forces me to re-design these how they should have been designed in the beginning.

My comment on the welding quality of the original SubaXtreme bars is based on what I observed in their workshop when I had my front and rear bars fitted and meeting the two original owners, John and Jodie ( I think).
The welds on my bars were, and still are, very well done, to my inexperienced eye.
However perhaps the new operators are not as proud of their work.

Picked up a little something on the way home. Hope this is a nice upgrade over the sureslip for the rear

The winch is on a front receiver salvaged and modified off of the rear of a dodge sx2.0
I don't have pictures of the reciever build or the welding needed to make it work.
Still waiting on a reversing solenoid pack to complete this one..

Very nice early Christmas present for your Foz, DM ...

Very flash looking, Sixer :poke:

I fitted my new bullbar last week. Was a bit more fiddly a job then I though it would be, but not too bad. I still need to move the windscreen washer bottle so it doesn't get knocked and modify my bash plate before I go off road again. And I'm looking out for some SG series I or gen 4 fog lights to fill the holes. Plus wire up the spot lights ... quite a few more small things to do actually.

But the bullbar looks good and I gain an extra 1.5 inches of clearance under the front, helping my approach angles.
