What have you done to your car today?

120K seems very low mileage to me. Have you got a dead rear crankshaft seal? I.e. could it be oil on the plate rather than plate wear?

Does not matter, the gearbox still have to come out. I had to replace my clutch at 110k because of the previous owner. Cost 600 for the SMF kit (did the job myself).

Cheers.

^ that's true, TB. But always useful to know the reason for any failure, if it can be ascertained.

I ran Velvet Touch forklift linings in both my LC and Kimberley because of ongoing oil seal problems and a lot of towing with both vehicles.

I think it depends on the use, offroading can be hard on the clutch. Mine was done at ~100k kms then when I took this one out at 215k kms it had very little left on it & big grooves in the pressure plate.

^ very true.

IIRC, a clutch plate gets up to several thousand degrees C in a remarkably short period of time when it is slipping. Of the order of seconds. This not only wears the clutch plate, but can also cause the surfaces of the flywheel and pressure plate to break down, causing scalloping and scoring.

And a nasty smell......
My first clutch was replaced at about 50000km under warranty when the dual mass FW started to become noisy. The thrust bearing then failed, became very noisy and rough, at about 216000kms, The replacement, normal, not DM, is still there at 330000kms so I drive with my fingers crossed.
Although gave no probs on the Googs recently.

I don't offroad as much as most of you here, it's a combo of upgraded turbo, some towing but mainly my wife's driving :poke:
got quoted $1295 fully fitted including machined flywheel
don't have a facility or time to DIY

^ my wife's car (the SH) is an auto. But she isn't one to slip the clutch on the rare occasions when she drives mine anyway.

Did some reverse circles in my new to me fwd liberty sedan

A productive day.
Rotated all 6 wheels.
Changed engine oil and filter.
Replaced rear strut spacing brace after repairing LHS rear inner wheel arch crack.
Started putting usual junk back in car after above two tasks.
Now enjoying a red.

Finally moved out of the "ice age" and ordered a Waeco car fridge! Bought and cut a MDF board to fit the rear cargo area. Now just got to make fridge mount, storage area for my stove etc.

Good looking unit, mate .

That size in a 3-way would have suited me just fine, if they just made them a bit LOWER.

I have a cheapo fridge, one day I'd love to get a Waeco or Engel
I really struggled with this issue some of the cheap ones look quite good but are still quite pricey. A lot are also 40 ltrs. Size was important to me as the Forester is not exactly spacious.
In the end I did a deal online for aud $635 and got the fridge, 240volt power adapter, insulated cover and remote thermometer and shipping.

Replaced leaking head gaskets and timing belt and pulleys . Took me week to do as I'd put my back out . If I ever have to do it again I'll take the engine out . Not the easiest job with the engine in lol
