Frosty Boy - Kiwi's SG Forester

Well, I thought I'd better joint this site, owning a Subaru and having offroad aspirations and all...

A few weeks ago I took a bit of a roadtrip up to Alexandra in Central Otago with my Dad, and bought a 2002 SG Forester X 5sp D/R, in what is very close British Racing Green. 205,300km (after driving it for a couple of weeks). It's not perfect, having many superficial parking dents, and it does need a good polish, but it has no rust due to the dry Central climate, and it burns no oil. Most of its kms are open-road, as the previous owner spent a lot of time commuting between Dunedin and Alex for work meetings, and so it drives pretty much like new. It has factory cruise control, and optional foglights too.

Picked it up for ~1/3 of what dealers are charging for JDM 2.0 autos with ~100,000kms so a pretty good deal. Best price:condition ratio SG I could find - I bought it for the 2.5, not the crap DR gearing (more easily rectified & no cert needed). Having said that, I've tested out the D/R on our driveway (really steep) and it's not too bad, but low 1st is equivalent to about low 3rd in Dad's Pathfinder and the lack of engine braking compared to what I'm used to scared me a little.

Great power and torque from the 2.5, and fuel economy isn't too bad. Does the EJ251 need 95 octane? The PO always used this, but according to the owners manual 90 octane is minimum - 91 is lowest in NZ. Anyway, between Alexandra and Roxburgh, on the way home to Dunedin, there is a very steep hill with a passing lane and a 55kph entry corner. I was following Dad (Toyota 86 auto) in the Foz, and we both pulled out at the bottom of the hill to pass a tourist in a JDM Sunny. I was in second, expecting to get thrashed going up the hill. By the top, and shifting at 5750rpm or so to 3rd, I had dropped about 10m on the 86. Impressed to say the least! Best part of the trip was driving his 86 to Alex.:lildevil:

Had a new clutch at 60,000km, so it is going to need a new one soon. Also has a slight oil leak at the rear of the engine (but doesn't burn any) and I will be doing gearbox/diff oils when I install the extended rear breather (already got the 8mm vinyl tubing). Cambelt was done at 113,000kms so I'll do it before 220,000 and get the clutch/seals at the same time. Should I do head gaskets too? They aren't weeping and I checked the radiator cap for white goo - also checked it again yesterday after 1000km and it's still fine.

Plans for mods are:
Bashplate (Done with one off my old Leone)
Daytime Running lights (done)
New 215/65r16 Kumho KH18 tyres (not A/T but done, I'm used to using chains offroad anyway)
RallyArmor mudflaps - didn't have OEM ones (done)
Removed those annoying little flaps before front wheels (visual mod)
Fitted roof rack - early 90s Prorack from a Maxima
STi sway bars with quick-releases front/rear - do I need bugeye-on sways or will GC ones fit?
Fan switch - diagram please?
Rear diff breather
1.45:1 DR (or maybe AD Subaroo 1.6:1?...)
LSD front/rear/DCCD centre?
Raised Kings!!!!
Slightly modified intake - front silencer removed and first 'box' re-reouted into fender for CAI/less water risk.
Repaint wheels, probably gunmetal metallic

Reason why I went to a Forester was for ease of modding - I can't be bothered certing it and up to 50mm spring lift is legal in NZ. I'll probably body lift/cert eventually - that, plus an R180 ARB air locker, is in my VERY long-term plans for the car.

I know you're all bored with the tl/dr wall-o-text, so here's some pics with more once I've done more mods/polished it:

Bringing offroad Subarus to NZ! (hopefully).

Nice job on the ECU, looks like a good safe spot. The Cruise control unit is just under the dash next to the kick panel. A few of us have wrapped it in plastic & tape plus moved it a bit higher. Glad I did when my poor Foz went for a swim lol.

Maybe time for a snorkel? Little more low down torque, great sound plus river crossings! :lildevil::monkeydance:
Nah the cruise control unit is in a different location with the SG - it's right up under the dashboard, behind the main part of the glovebox. Higher than the airbag module.

I've been keeping an eye on TradeMe for one of those Mitsi snorkels...

Cunningly done , KF .

I use the OM slot for my written spiral bound trip log book. My new tablet will fit in the other part of the glove box. My OM resides in the back pocket of the driver's seat cover.

From this wheel stuff, you wouldn't think I have raised Kings...

And to max droop, with some air to boot!

I may have ruined my wheel alignment.

And a couple of vids - top video is the best bit of the track, bottom video is the whole thing start to end and back again:

Haha, you sure hit that hard lol. Trick is to know how hard to go. That section could have been done slower & if you stalled out, reverse back down & try it a bit harder or a slightly different line. Sometimes only 6" to the side makes all the difference

Sure was spectacular though :monkeydance:

Yes, the video makes it look less steep though, it's a pretty rough track surface. The tussock hides it in the video shot, but there's a large schist outcrop I had to run the left front wheel up as I didn't want to smack my bashplate into it. That was what I just barely touched on the way down.

You're right though, I'm lucky I didn't break anything hitting it like that. Next time I'll take it slower.
I've been up there in dad's pathfinder before, and he hits it even harder if anything. I've been up there in the wet with chains on all four wheels (he had road tyres, don't ask...) and we broke several chain links.

I think it was easier in the foz because it's so much lighter and the wheelbase (crucially the ramp over angle) is much better.

This happened today. Coming back from a hunting trip I was driving up a gravel road, coming around a right hander when a guy coming down too quickly in a 2wd hilux locked up and stove the side of my foz in... Not good! Unlicensed and uninsured driver... Needless to say he's going to pay, but I'm pretty pissed off and I don't need it!

Bad end to a fun trip. I'll post the videos and pics of the 4wding when I get them.

This could be the end of her, depending on what the panelbeater says...

Haha yeah rifle was still in the car, didn't need it thankfully.
He was quite a young guy, ended up going back to his folk's place to sort ****.
They weren't impressed.

Yeah, taking it to the panelbeater on Monday, his uncle has a shop...
I've got photos of his boss's ute (he was driving it), address etc. And my mate as a witness.

Damn that's not cool!
Hope it gets all sorted out mate. Horrible when that happens. Best of luck!

Well, she's toast. Maggie is no longer with us. Much as it pains me to write this, I no longer own a Subaru. Yesterday I became the new owner of a 2009 AUDM import Suzuki Grand Vitara. Today it got a new set of shoes, some D697s.
Several reasons. It wasn't economic to repair the Foz. It needed two new doors and a front fender, and a section of the rear body needed to be cut out and replaced as the fuel filler cap was pushed backwards and the body was pushed into the taillight.
As well, the engine had head gasket issues (leaking oil from both) and it has recently started consuming coolant (frothy oil, steam out of oil filler cap when hot)... And the coolant level had dropped. As well, the gearbox was getting crunchy. Basically it needed a rebuild and I simply don't have time to do it.
I got the Suzuki for a deal off a mate of my dad's who does imports. Two main reasons I bought it - was significantly cheaper than an SH forester, and it has a 2:1 reduction gear for steep downhills, and traction control to avoid diagonal wheelspin.
I feel the 2:1 is necessary in NZ and a hunting trip I was on last weekend confirmed that for me. It's just not safe to ride the brakes down steep, slippery off camber hills.

I'll stick around here though! Love the site and the culture. I'll be back in a Subie one day (although probably a brz).

Well, it may have taken me almost 6 months to edit and upload, but here's the video of my last 4wd trip in the Foz. Yes, the one that killed it.
Hopefully it's not too boring/too long.

Sorry about that, thought it was public.

Can see it now...damn that looks cold!

Poor Foz, sounds like she was on her last legs anyway though. & you got a Zook now, they're very capable!

It was a little chilly, I'd forgotten about the earlier snow in April and was hoping to drive up onto the tops (Big Hut photo). Probably would have gotten terribly stuck up there though as the ruts were about a foot deep...
Snow had driven all the animals lower I think, didn't even see any fresh sign. Might head back this summer in the Zook.

It's pretty good, the traction control is awesome (better than that on my father's Pathfinder) and the 2:1 reduction is great offroad - first gear is quite low too, second actually halves the RPM from 1st so low 1st gives a brilliant crawl ratio!
Needs a lift + skid plates though as it only has a bit over 200mm under the transfer case... It's also not as fast as the Foz and doesn't handle anywhere near as well, but everything's a compromise. It's definitely more on the 'truck' side of car.

But yeah, editing that video brought back the memories of Maggie! Had some good times with her, it ended too soon.
