Frosty Boy - Kiwi's SG Forester

Well, I thought I'd better joint this site, owning a Subaru and having offroad aspirations and all...

A few weeks ago I took a bit of a roadtrip up to Alexandra in Central Otago with my Dad, and bought a 2002 SG Forester X 5sp D/R, in what is very close British Racing Green. 205,300km (after driving it for a couple of weeks). It's not perfect, having many superficial parking dents, and it does need a good polish, but it has no rust due to the dry Central climate, and it burns no oil. Most of its kms are open-road, as the previous owner spent a lot of time commuting between Dunedin and Alex for work meetings, and so it drives pretty much like new. It has factory cruise control, and optional foglights too.

Picked it up for ~1/3 of what dealers are charging for JDM 2.0 autos with ~100,000kms so a pretty good deal. Best price:condition ratio SG I could find - I bought it for the 2.5, not the crap DR gearing (more easily rectified & no cert needed). Having said that, I've tested out the D/R on our driveway (really steep) and it's not too bad, but low 1st is equivalent to about low 3rd in Dad's Pathfinder and the lack of engine braking compared to what I'm used to scared me a little.

Great power and torque from the 2.5, and fuel economy isn't too bad. Does the EJ251 need 95 octane? The PO always used this, but according to the owners manual 90 octane is minimum - 91 is lowest in NZ. Anyway, between Alexandra and Roxburgh, on the way home to Dunedin, there is a very steep hill with a passing lane and a 55kph entry corner. I was following Dad (Toyota 86 auto) in the Foz, and we both pulled out at the bottom of the hill to pass a tourist in a JDM Sunny. I was in second, expecting to get thrashed going up the hill. By the top, and shifting at 5750rpm or so to 3rd, I had dropped about 10m on the 86. Impressed to say the least! Best part of the trip was driving his 86 to Alex.:lildevil:

Had a new clutch at 60,000km, so it is going to need a new one soon. Also has a slight oil leak at the rear of the engine (but doesn't burn any) and I will be doing gearbox/diff oils when I install the extended rear breather (already got the 8mm vinyl tubing). Cambelt was done at 113,000kms so I'll do it before 220,000 and get the clutch/seals at the same time. Should I do head gaskets too? They aren't weeping and I checked the radiator cap for white goo - also checked it again yesterday after 1000km and it's still fine.

Plans for mods are:
Bashplate (Done with one off my old Leone)
Daytime Running lights (done)
New 215/65r16 Kumho KH18 tyres (not A/T but done, I'm used to using chains offroad anyway)
RallyArmor mudflaps - didn't have OEM ones (done)
Removed those annoying little flaps before front wheels (visual mod)
Fitted roof rack - early 90s Prorack from a Maxima
STi sway bars with quick-releases front/rear - do I need bugeye-on sways or will GC ones fit?
Fan switch - diagram please?
Rear diff breather
1.45:1 DR (or maybe AD Subaroo 1.6:1?...)
LSD front/rear/DCCD centre?
Raised Kings!!!!
Slightly modified intake - front silencer removed and first 'box' re-reouted into fender for CAI/less water risk.
Repaint wheels, probably gunmetal metallic

Reason why I went to a Forester was for ease of modding - I can't be bothered certing it and up to 50mm spring lift is legal in NZ. I'll probably body lift/cert eventually - that, plus an R180 ARB air locker, is in my VERY long-term plans for the car.

I know you're all bored with the tl/dr wall-o-text, so here's some pics with more once I've done more mods/polished it:

So you put in a grounding kit, good work  I've been meaning to do that myself! Where did you get the kit from or did you make it up yourself?[/quote]

Gidday KF

Some nice scenery there.
The landscape's not bad either ... :rotfl:.

Flickr allow huge storage for free these days - something like 10 GB, or more.

Maybe start an account with them?

Some nice pics

That grounding kit sounds good. I use Penrite HPR5 5W40 full synthetic, seems to do the job well. I keep a lookout for when its on special & buy several :iconwink:

The car currently has non-synthetic oil in it, 15W-40 I think. It's due for a change in 3000km so I'll put some synthetic in then, probably 10W-40 as 5W-40 is heinously expensive. Or I might just use some non-synthetic Magnatec. Does the oil type make that much of a difference?

Cheers for the help guys.

The recommended oil for the engine is most likely 0W-20 fully synthetic. I wouldn't use oil as light as this in a fit ... . It is recommended for both our SG and SH (both have EJ-253 engines).

5W-40 FS has the same low temperature rating as 0W-20 (-30°C), but a much higher high temperature rating (+40°C). Using a 5W-xx multigrade oil makes for easier cold starting and better low temperature lubrication when the engine is cold. Since almost all engine wear occurs in the first couple of minutes after starting it cold, this is not a bad thing ... :iconwink:.

FS oils last far, far better than mineral oils. Roo2 went 24 months/10,000 Kms between oil changes using the Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 FS. The oil was still orange coloured, and both felt and smelled OK at the end. No clagging, emulsification or frothing, and the car had no measurable oil use during that time. Using mineral oil, I would have had to change the oil three extra times. That more than makes up for the 2x difference in price, for a better oil and lubrication to boot.

AFAIK FS oils are recommended for all the EJ-25x engines.

Just FWIW.

I'll probably go with synthetic when I change it next, it does seem to last longer in our other cars.

Flexes pretty well, the lump I drove up looked pretty big from the driver's seat - I was a little worried I may have gotten it stuck but she reversed out with no diagonal spin.

slo4uc.jpg

The rear wheels certainly 'stuff' nicely - I'm glad I didn't get 70 profiles as I think they'd rub at the rear of the arch and I certainly couldn't put chains on.

The rustiest little Subie I've ever seen - was used as a paddock basher but has now been sitting for a couple of years. Pretty much everything is missing from below halfway down the doors, it's impressively rusty. You can see why I got onto the rust spots on mine... The relatively humid, wet and salty peninsula climate doesn't do much for cars.

There is a chart in the owners manual stating the recommended oils for different climates.

0W20 is ONLY recommended in the later FB engines...do not use it in an EJ, you'll destroy the engine! :(

What tyres do you have? 70 profile should fit easily under the much higher SG rear perches. You should look at our SF rear spring perches, I cant even fit a finger between the tyre & perch even with my stock tyres :rotfl:

Oh, poor lil MY, my favourite Subie is the MY hatch, pretty rare here, not sure if you were lucky enough to get them

I'll be heading up to Queenstown this weekend for a spot of skiing, so while I'm there I'll be having a play in the Arrow River area below Arrowtown, a bit of a play area for the locals. Might write something of a trip report when I get back depending on how much 4wding I do. And I do have recovery gear - 1.5tonne hand winch, tow rope+snatch strap, spade, shackles, ground anchors and chains, which are also good for snow.:rotfl:
What snatch do you have? Remember our little Subies are very light & don't have proper front recovery points, so IMO don't use a snatch strap heavier then 5T. Best to also use a distribution strap to spread the load between the 2 front tie down points.

There's a really good thread on recovery gear:

It IS the recommended oil for use in the EJ-253 in both SWMBO's MY10 SH, and in my MY06 SG ... Crazy stuff!!
Page 11-18 of my SG OM states: "Non-turbo models ... *: 0W-20 is recommended".

5W-30 FS is recommended for use in the turbo models ... Now how about that? AND I wonder why ...

The OM does recommend heavier oils for use in severe conditions: 20W-40 or 20W-50 ...

BTW, thanks for the correction. I was told that meaning for JDM on the US Forester site ...

0W-20 is the recommended oil for Dad's old MY08 EJ204 Impreza - not sure what's supposed to be in his current Toyota 86 but I know he runs Castrol synthetic 5W-30 in it, like he used to in the Impreza. 0W is just too thin for the heat range we get in NZ. Coldest I've been in was -14 and hottest +39, Celsius.

I'm running Kumho KH18 215/65r16s, there's space between the perch, enough to run chains, but I was referring to the space between the tyre and the mudflap at the back of the arch - it's pretty limited even with 65 profile.

I'd love to have an MY touring wagon, with the MY RX twin-carb EA81s and a full-time AWD L-series RX-II gearbox and clutch LSD + rear discs. Would be beautiful...

Snatch is 4T I believe. Yeah, I've heard about the distribution strap - in my owner's manual though, it says to tow from the RHS hook - the LHS hook is mounted higher and is of a different design. What about your SF?

I need a tree protector and distribution strap, I've got the rest in avrying forms which is good to know. I also have one rip-off 'maxtrax' style rubber thing - useless with a Subie.

Yeah, oil is a contentious point. I think when reading the oil recommendations it's wise to take them with a grain of salt. I know for Dad's old Impreza, the 'recommended' was a 0W - but, the temperature range for the 5W was pretty much the same except that it started at -20 Celsius not off the chart like the 0W and ended higher. It was safer, cheaper and easier to use 5W.

Ok, didnt know that. Seems way too light though

Haha, there's a few people who'd like to have that lol :iconwink:

There is one guy on AUSubaru who has a twin carb EA81 making others very jealous. A few people on here have the AWD locking gearbox, not sure what its from though

My SF has tie down points on either side of the radiator support panel. Neither is all that strong but if snatched carefully using a distribution strap & 5T snatch strap, its strong enough.

Is that one of those roll up tracks? I've heard they tend to bunch up...

MaxTrax would be great but sooo expensive. I just use "MilkTrax" lol

Have you got a compressor? Thats the best bit of equipment so you can air down for heaps better grip and air up again for the drive home

Yeah, it's one of those roll-up rubber track things from Repco. It's okay, only time I've used it was in mud with Dad's Pathfinder, didn't bunch up but it did sink a bit.

I do have a compressor, an old Bushranger - but airing down can be dangerous on our sharp rocky tracks, is good for mud though.

Well, got back from the weekend skiing, didn't do any 4wding as I just didn't have any time. Still used the low range though, it was great for going up and down the muddy skifield road behind tourists in rentals going agonisingly slowly... The weather was interesting, snowed a bit and was really windy one day.

2lkfa4m.jpg

Not that much snow though, wasn't parked for long enough.

2wf0jyd.jpg

On another note, I forgot to replace the gearbox sump plug gasket when I changed the gearbox oil, and it's now got a slow drip onto my header which smells great and produces a nice cloud of smoke after driving - I'll drain the fluid, put on a new gasket and put the same oil back in this weekend.

I haven't made any mods recently, but it did snow overnight so I drove up Mt Cargill to get some pics.
Nothing too crazy, just an inch of snow.
2me50f8.jpg

I went a wee bit offroad on the way down the hill, there was a bit of a track on the side of the road. Muddy, slightly uphill with a small mud pit at the end but nothing serious. Didn't get any pics/video as I was alone. This is what happens when you're bored and have a 3hr gap.

Looks cool, mate.

Extremely cool ...

In fact, downright bloody cold ... :poke: :rotfl:

Yeah, she wasn't too cold, it was about 5C when I was taking the pics.:lildevil: Bloody slippery though, I actually didn't go to the top of the hill as I couldn't be bothered putting on chains. Just about slipped over while taking those pics though, but bald shoes don't help...

Coming back down the hill, the engine braking effect in LR is a bit weird. There's quite a bit of engine braking at first, then it dies off a bit over 2500rpm, and then comes back with a vengeance at ~3500rpm - which unfortunately equates to too fast in low 1st. I think this car needs a 1.447:1, at least for downhills. It was fine going up. :P I loved how well it went offroad, wasn't anything too hardcore and I wasn't pushing as I was by myself with only chains and a tow rope for recovery gear. It's also kinda hard to go from low 2nd to 1st when heading downhill without experiencing 'runaway'. I can see why Dad loves his tiptronic for offroading - and the 2.5:1 in his Pathie!

Wish I had some pretty snow nearby for a drive! There may be some in the Blue Mountains this weekend perhaps

Well, my ORS stickers arrived today so I chucked them on. Probably should have ordered a spare, I screwed up the .com on the windscreen one so it just says OFFROADSUBARUS now.

I also dislike how small the windscreen one looks. Might have to get a 'big stick'.

I like the small one for the rear. The big one is nice for the windscreen but when you fit it, cut slits in the backing so it can curve as you apply it to follow the curve of the windscreen

Mt. Cargill Scenery

Made it to the top of Mt Cargill today, took some shots of the scenery. Road wasn't in great shape, the guy in the Celica was doing well to get up.

Nice pics. Doesnt look too cold, is that near Invercargill? Just going from Mt.Cargill...damn cold down there!
