General Tyre / Tire Discussion

What you're experiencing with the vibration doesn't sound right at all.

I'd be doing what Sigmund said; going back & explaining what you have told us to them.
Also insist that they take it for a drive (make sure you go with them)

As for pressures I used to run mine at 38psi F / 36psi R. I have since changed to 36psi all round & found that to be better.

Regards
Mr Turbo

Yes, the vibration was very strange and it was real heavy vibration, too. Almost like fine corrugations. I could hear the license plate rattling. And it followed me as I slowed down from 100 to 80, to 70. Thing was, it was intermittent. On the way home after faffing with the pressures, it was not there at all. Wheel nuts are tight so it's not that. I can only think there's problem with the balancing.

Oddly enough, my mechanic, who sent it out for tyres, actually said "I'll be interested to hear if there is any more vibration on the highway". And I was prepared for some additional drumming and a different feel. But there's something out of whack. Thanks for the input folks - I'll have them drive it and redo it.

40PSI is ridiculous, will cause increased wear esp in the middle of the tyre & will reduce the tyres grip considerably. Most on here run them at 34-36psi. I'd suggest running the same front & rear to avoid wear on the centre diff.

I'd be taking em back & get them to rebalance the tyres. If the vibration continues then contact Yokohama...they have brilliant customer service!

& make sure you ask them to have 34 or 36 psi...40psi is for big fourbie tyres carrying twice the weight we do...

Thanks Nacha

I'm at 35 on all four. I drove the same trip last night and again with the vibration - less but still noticeable. Coming in at more than 110 kays and following the drop in speed all the way down to 70. Once the harmonic lets go you can accelerate back up to 100 vibration-free. It's really weird. I took my hands off the wheel so as to watch the shimmy and it's not in my head. Going back to the shop tomorrow and will have them drive the same road I did (the freeway between Cleveland St and the Runway Tunnel at Mascot). With the lower pressures everything was much more comfortable on the road, too. Oddly, going back the other way I didn't have the same experience with vibration.

My brother has the Yoko C Drives on his 03 X 215/60 16 size. They are a very average tyre but reasonably quiet. A world away from the Bridgestone Potenza RE002 Adrenalins on mine for grip and response. I would never get them.

Thanks, how are you finding the RE002s in terms of wear/life?
The present set have 61,000km on them and they will easily reach 70,000km. Incredible really when you take into account their performance role and incredible grip. They seem to be lasting even better than the 2 sets of RE001's that I ran before. In fact they are as good or better than any tyre I've used in the last 40 years. I have never been able to get 70,000km out of a set of tyres. Having a good wheel alignment helps but then the Forester is fantastic as far as that goes. I get one done for each set of new tyres and they tell me each time they didn't have to adjust anything. I run 36psi all round now.

Yeah, car makers often recommend lower pressures for a smooth ride. I usually add 2-4 psi for better tyre life.

Look at the placard for the extra psi for loads in the rear. Is impt.

what are other's running their 215/60R16's on?

37-38psi on 205/75/r15, not harsh at all and a good wear pattern, only problem is the edges are feathering slightly because i need to slow the **** down in corners.

When i got them put on a bobjane in watergardens they had them at 45psi, load of useless exprensive idiots there.

For those running the General Grabber AT2, did it have any impact on mileage in comparison with stock(ish) road tires?

I'm considering getting a set (225/70/R15 instead of the stock 215/65/R16). I'll probably need to change my tires anyway so I figured I might as well get these but as I do 90% of my kilometers in town/highways... I'd rather not burn much more fuel than I already do :P

I can get them for about 640$ CAD shipped.

Thinking of taking my Yoko At-s off (215/60/16) and putting Maxxis MA-P1 on for everyday driving. That way I preserve the AT-s for off road/ snow use. The reviews for the Maxxis seem good, has anyone had any experience with these ?

I had the maxxis MA-P1 on my forester before putting on firestone destination a/t's. The maxxis gripped pretty good in dry/wet blacktop but wore very quickly i got about 35,000km out of a set of 4 and they were pretty useless then letting go in the littlest bit of wet road, should get a bit more wear out of a set rotating more than every 10,000k

I have been running on Maxxis Bavo 771 AT. Not the most AT pattern, but have been pretty good on both road and in mud/ snow. More of an all rounder I think.

I have done just over 20,000 miles on them and still a good 6-7mm tread left, so pretty happy with them..

Unless you're wanting muddies, I really think its hard to go past Yoki Geolander AT-s. Of all the members who have them, there's only been one who has had any probs. They grip well on wet bitumen, a must in my book! & do well offroad in all conditions except mud. But I am yet to hear of an AT that does handle mud. They're quiet, bag out brilliantly & have a factory puncture warranty...not many tyre companies would do that unless they have great confidence in its design & construction :iconwink:

More confidence than I do.... And what a drama it was getting the warranty, although after the first couple it became easier. All up, four punctures. One for every trip I took them on.

Still considering the Maxxis for every day use. Anyone had experience with the Toyo Teo Plus ?

Im running toyo teo plus tires on my outback with a 280+ hp JDM wrx motor. Even with all this power they grip like hell. In the wet I can drive like its dry. I can go flat out first gear around a corner and only get a bit of diaganol 'stutter'.

So far theyve had at least 30, 000 kms on them and still have at least 30% left maybe more.

They are also quiet and have a very nice ride.

My bad...it seems the Toyo Teo Plus is a highway tyre, I was more talking ATs.

Davidov, what size tyres do you have? I could only find profiles up to 60 in 16"
