Metal Detecting

Good to see the detector pay for itself :) Another jewelry rescue complete.

A shovel and a sieve haha, do you actually know what gold does in water, silt sand etc, its a heavy metal and moves around continuously, what hits the water now in 5 minutes can be a few metres away.

Lucky you didnt drop the ring on the beach it could be a metre deep in 10 seconds on ly to resuface when the sea cut the sand down to bedrock.

I go out all the time, havent missed a weekend hunt in 10 months, my Garrett AT Pro more than paid for itself so i bought a top of the range coin and relic hunting machine, a Minelab CTX3030.

Heres some pics of some of my setup

Hi my04tone,

Great looking kit you have there. Kev has itchy feet to start hunting again, but this weekend is out... Have a working bee to help clean up some flood damage at a friends property. He also is keen to have a go at detecting.... So maybe we can have a hunt during our coffee break :-). Fairly keen actually to get on the road much more often, thoroughly enjoyed our getaway over Christmas, so did Scooby2 on her first real trip. Was very impressed with how she handled the dirt and towing. Solid as a rock :-). Hope you have good luck with you hunt this weekend!

I'm getting itchy feet too lol. Pretty keen to get a Garrett AT Pro & start getting me some coin & gold! :lildevil:

my04tone, I see your from Melb...where did you get yours from? A google search doesnt show many prospecting shops in East or SE Melb :(

OK I'll check em out. A google search showed they were the only shop I could find!

Noted disclaimer lol :rotfl:

Excellent my04tone! Will be keen to get out next weekend hunting thanks to your inspirational posts :-) .... had a great weekend helping some friends clean up after the floods. It's really great to see what can be achieved when a heap of people turn up and give a hand.

Ok here's what i do
I hand anything of value thats obviously not a relic into the cops, if not claimed in 3 months its mine. I have never missed yet

This ring is 24k gold, handmade in possibly India according to a mate who used to work as a jewellry assessor in a large pawn shop. Its worth bullion weight to me of about $150 not bad money seeing as i found it in about 5 mins

Last year i found a 14k gold ring 6" deep in and old bush reserve, i explained to the cop its 19th century and he said 2 things have probably happened.
1: The owner is deceased
2: The insurance would maybe have been claimed on along time ago.

He handed me back the ring.

Some more from the day

I try and get out every weekend or day off rain hail or shine, but helping people clean up after a disaster would take priority with me as well.

This is an activity I have always wondered about. If I've ever got the spare cash to get hold of one of these detectors I reckon I'd be all over it.

Hi mate

you can get into the hobby rather cheaply, and get a machine that will do the job quite well for a couple of hundred $$. A Garrett Ace 350 or even a 250 are a great starting point.

Yeah there are some of the 250's on ebay for as little as $200. *Strokes chin thoughtfully*

Very nice my04tone :raz:

I think I like the one in the first pic the best :iconwink:

Regards
Mr Turbo

Seems everyone has been picking that one..

Will give them a clean up today and see what i have, maybe a bit of 925 silver amongst them

Sweet finds! My heart would have skipped a beat with that gold ring too. Thanks for postin' your finds, they're motivating me to set aside some time to use my detector soon . I picked up a MineLab a couple of years ago for benchmarking, I've yet to use it for anything else.
