New Forester Coming Soon!!

Is it just me or does the body look a bit more "squared" than the SH???

^ Actually that doesn't look too bad. I reckon it has some XV, SH and SG in it. I reckon it's better than the current SH. Throw on a Subaxtreme bullbar, 2" lift, 2.5l turbo and CVT auto then she'd be set for offroad :lildevil:

^ I think it could be the ultimate auto for offroad, the question is how much do the electronics interfere to avoid wheel-spin and can they be switched off?

^ Well from what I've tried in my mothers XV I think the CVT works well.
There is power when you need it at all speeds combine with the paddle shifts it makes it very enjoyable and fun.
I noticed this on gravel especially.

One advantage over my Forester it has is the new auto + traction control system. I actually got stuck in my Forester on the weekend in my bothers driveway (yes it is very hardcore for a driveaway). I actually got diagonal spin from my front passengers side wheel and drivers side rear. I had to move forward a few meters, rev the car and give it heaps in reverse to get up the 45+ degree hill(driveway. lol) Later after parking in the XV I went to reverse out, started reversing. The same diagonal wheel slip occurred, I kept my foot on the accelerator at the same position(2400rpm). The wheels kept spinning for a few seconds then traction control or what ever it is kicked in and the car moved back. I then put my foot down to continue up the 50m loose dirt, leaf and rutty driveway  :raspberry:
I reckon it certainly works well. The paddle shifters though being a big thing for me which make it fun to drive like a manual and not boring like your standard auto(yes even in an XT the auto is still boring... in my opinion).

So what's the consensus on the CVT? Up to handling offroad?

Since it uses a torque convertor, like the existing autos, it should be good for low speed crawling and hill climbs.

The VDC (stability and traction control system) should be just the same as it is on existing Foresters. For offroad driving a button allows the torque reduction aspect of it (that cuts engine power) to be turned off while leaving the 'brake traction control' aspect active.

Well from what I've tried in my mothers XV I think the CVT works well...

This sounds promising Taza!

I'd be keen to try a Forester diesel with the CVT when they finally bring it out.

I agree. And I like it :)

It looks more... "manly" this way. I usually prefer smooth curves on sportscars, sedans, etc, but IMHO SUVs should have bolder styling. That's a step in the right direction over the current-gen Foresters :)

Agree with you and I don't like it as much as the SH, especially the rear lights. The update of the SG looked better again. At least it doesn't look as bad as the present Outback and they haven't gone for all the curves and flashes of the Mazda CX5 and Hyundai iX35. Subaru certainly aren't making the attractive, individual cars of the '97 to '06 era though. I don't reckon this new Forester will be a big sales success for Subaru like the SH has been.

And has anyone noticed how the SH has gone from being one of the two best selling SUV's in Australia to being outsold by CX-5s, X-Trails, RAV 4s, iX35s, Captivas, Territorys & Klugers. Back in 09 it would occasionally make the top 10 in the market and now it never gets in the top 20. It should be a bit of a wake up call for Subaru that "Wheels" magazine could only rate the Forester as only average in a group test of all its competitors recently. Read that article and you wouldn't buy one. When they did the same type of test back at the end of the SG series they were able to still rate it equal no 1 with the then new RAV4. I wonder how they will rate the new Forester when it comes onto the market? It will have to be a big improvement to even catch the CX-5.

No word on what the X-Mode does as yet? Unless you understand Japanese.

I'm liking what I'm seeing. Direct injection turbo sounds good :)

I like the look. If they build a 6spd diesel with low range, I'll buy one immediately. But I can't help fearing they are going to standardise away from the low range. I agree with others upthread - I really use the low range a lot off the beaten track and find it indispensable. I only wish it was Scorpion low range low. If there's no low range, I'll probably buy the latest model petrol with the low range and then keep it for a very long time.

Agree with you on both points.

My 05 Outback will eventually get a new drive train, with lower ratio 'lows'.

I'm aiming on keeping it 'forever'... well for another 20 years anyway. At 76 I'll be approaching 'giving it away' by then, I guess!

I must admit, going by some of the latest pics, the new Forry is starting to grow on me.
But as I said in an earlier post, I'd like to see it in the flesh first, before I make a final decision :iconwink:

Regards
Mr Turbo

What Nick Senior said...

Nick Senior said in a recent comment to a news outlet that the new Forester "would go further than it had ever gone before".

I was not sure whether he was talking about enhanced off road capability or improved fuel economy and he did not elaborate.

I'd jump at an off road spec Forester. Real low range, diesel, under body protection, 2 inches more height. The basic interior but with the good stereo.

Shame you can't pick and mix a car to your own specs and have them build it for you. I'd pay a premium for what I want for sure.

The no-diesel base model is plain dumb given the nature of this country, if you ask me.

Hummm, is this a different setting to the VDC in terms of torque and wheel slip controls? Similar to what Land Rover has in their terrain-dial sort of thingie?

Anyways, it could be this that Nick Senior was referring to when he made the comment about the new Foz going further than all others before it.

I would seriously consider a Diesel with either a good auto (proven offroad) or a manual with DR...

I'm liking the shape of the car, but are the overhangs even bigger than before? Would be interesting to come up with bars to get rid of the issue...

Pedro.
