Dulagarl: the Lifted H6 Forester

Well, I bought it, and I have to say that what SKT has done is truly inspired.

It’s a freaking rocket on the bitumen, and it has an enormous amount of grunt offroad.

Engine transplant thread is here:

Here’s a little log of bring it home, and it’s first offroad trip once home.

Jan 29th I flew to Coolangatta. Scott picked me up at the airport and we went for a drive. It didn’t take long for me to be convinced that I should buy this. Sure, it had a couple of issues, for example some worn out bushes in the front end, and a cooling issue, but I could tell that this was a VERY serious vehicle.

Brought it home via Lismore and Casino and then to Tamworth for the night. Next day was Tamworth to Narrandera. Narrandera to Melbourne on the Minday was relatively easy after all of that.

Saw some amazing country in the process. Didn’t have time for many snaps, but here are a few…

Some of the country just into NSW after casino…

Took a detour via the outer solar system…

Actually, that virtual solar system drive from siding spring observatory is a good idea. That pic was taken in Gilgandra.

While on the space bent, couldn’t resist a couple of pics with the Parkes Radio Telescope…

It was 38 degrees Celsius when those shots were taken, and it didn’t get cooler for hours. Unsurprisingly, the vehicle got a bit hot just south of Forbes.

A bit further south past West Wyalong, and there was still water around from December. Ridiculously flat country with paddocks turned to lakes…

So, when I got home, I went straight to the mechanic and got an aircon service. I also consulted about improving airflow to the radiator. I looked at pics of offroad bars on Outbacks on the Subaxtreme site, and also the bar on the latest Forester. Armed with that info I decided to cut some holes in the bulbar, and this is the result…

Gotta love the grille mesh from supacheap auto!

So, I then set up the GPS on the dash with some adhesive Velcro…

and connected the ECU to the laptop to monitor engine performance and temperatures.

(BTW: I think I might have resolved the “cooling issues”!)

... part two to follow

I did experience the same when I went to Morocco driving on the corrugations, both rear were just dust of rubber. To come back to Switzerland, I found an old truck tire and cut some pieces of rubber to fit on top of the hats and did the job properly back home. But I don't remember that my suspension "bottomed" and I had the problem only on the rear struts.

Morocco in the Forester. That's super cool, jf1sf5! Glad you managed to find a temporary fix to complete the adventure and drive back home.

The rubber was a minor issue. It was the bent metal that I was most concerned about. Pics have now been added to original post on previous page.

So is that top spring hat supposed to be on an angle like that?

I hope so, otherwise it is bent much worse than what I thought. I didn't see the new ones to compare.

Ok, some news on the Dulagarl.

Insurance
So, Shannons cracked the ****s with me because I had more than two claims in a three year period. They decided not to reinsure me. people should note that Shannons have a three strikes and yer out approach, which they say is based on the requirements of their underwriter. Pretty **** really when you consider that one of my claims was hail damage, and another "claim" was for damage done by their transporter in bringing the car back to Melb from Dubbo.

Anyways, was a stressful experience, but I found another insurer called Australian 4WD insurance, which is offered by DGA Insurance Brokers and is underwritten by Allianz. I couldn't get agreed value, but I got market value plus market value of all modifications and accessories. This means that I have over $20K of cover now, and I'm only paying about 30% more than what I was with Shannons for about 50% more cover.

I have heard some pretty bad things about Shannons and their dodgy dealings. Your experience doesn't surprise me one bit.

Allianz are the underwriters for the Over Fifties broker that we are insured through. They have always been very good about agreed value + extras at replacement cost - AFTER I pointed out that they would probably have to buy new parts for most of the extras ...

We also have the annual "discussion" about the figures in Glass's Guide where I point out that neither they nor I have a S/H MV Dealers license and that therefore we will both have to pay retail prices for a replacement vehicle, and that I really would not wish to have to resort to the indemnity clause that is part of every MV insurance policy ... :). That is, that the Glass's Guide figures are irrelevant to the retail market ...
They usually then agree to re-evaluate the agreed value to something more like what I think it should be ... :rotfl:

Bloody incompetent repairs on your strut tops too. Mention that you " ... may have to explore what legal remedies may be available to you ... ". Usually focuses the attention well, IME.

^ don't disagree with any of that.

In other news, I have been looking at closed lopp lambda mode for the O2 sensors and the ECU, and fuel trimming at cruise speeds. I hope to have some results to report this weekend.

Thats getting pretty techo. Very interested how you go... :iconwink:

You know the best method for "fuel trimming"? Ease off on the right foot lol :rotfl:

It doesn't really make much difference with this car. I have tried!

Performed some more cosmetic surgery yesterday.

The engine cover always looked crappy, like it had been damaged by acid or something. previous owner said he cleaned it with everything imaginable and couldn't get it to look good. If you look at the engine transplant thread, it looked ****ty from the start.

So, I bought another one on ebay a while ago. It neded to have a few bits cut out of it (just to address slightly different hose angles in the engine bay of a Forester), so I did that and fitted it yesterday.

Looks so much better.

Nice engine cover, it makes a big difference...will it go better off road :bling::iconwink:

No. It doesn't need to.
Does the mighty H6 Foz have cruise control? I don't see the stock vacuum module up against the firewall.. There is a reservoir in it's place..

No. Well spotted.

Looks so much better.

Sure does

I have noticed some engines have pretty similar fuel economies no matter how you drive them. I had a RX3 with a 12a turbo EFI transplant with Microtech computer...the only thing that changed its fuel economy was the tune..."power" or "economy".

I always asked for the "power" tune :rotfl:

So you dont have cruise control...shouldnt be too hard to put in a Subie or aftermarket setup....

Nice, Dulagarl! Makes your H6 Forester's engine bay look factory-fresh.

I wonder whether the H6 cover would fit the regular 2.5 liter H4? The engine bay sure looks cleaner with a cover like that.

On a related note, other than look good, does an engine cover like this serve any practical purpose?

I have no idea if it would fit a 4 cyl, but I think the turbos have a similar but smaller cover.

As for whether it serves any practical purpose, I have no idea. You could sit a stubbie on it if you felt inclined.
