Offroad Driving Tips

If you look at this video, and look at the second and third cones in particular, you can see that when you apply power at the right time, you can get the rear end to slide. BUT- in the Forrie it will be harder as it does not have the diffs my car has. But it can still be done to a lesser degree.

Then there is this one

that video makes it look easy, deffiantly not that easy in the forester.
but either way there is still come good tips mentioned when driving on public roads aviod the handbrakes but if you want to have some cheeky fun when no one is around come into the corner off the power in the right gear and give it some right boot at the right time and you should be right. JUST dont over do it other wise you will end up in trouble very quickly

I love the way you spin it in such a tight circle. It has great acceleration on wet cement! :lildevil:

I think it'll be a few weeks before I learn to do that in my EJ20 NA Foz :rotfl:

Great vids Rally :raz:

I'll 2nd what thunder039 said.... you make it look just so easy :monkeydance:

It helps now that the car has been set up to suit my driving style. Thing is, look where I apply power coming out of the first cone. You can see how much traction it has as it accelerates (quickly)to the second cone. And it launched pretty well also. Anyway, with the current set up it turns in far better than it used to.

I was chatting to a mate in the club. He and another mate went to Porsche skidpan day. There were GT3's, GT2's, Carrera's- the lot including AWD's. One of them had a car very close in spec to my car, the other ran one with the same drivetrain, but with a 2.5 and a lot more power. They did not just beat the glorified dak daks, they obliterated them. We're talking 3-6 seconds quicker per course. So much so that many of the drivers would not even speak to them. Some very bruised egos when a couple of 12 year old Subarus- one of them a daily driver- can shame the mighty Teutons.

Bit like that Subie advert from about 10 years ago ... :rotfl: :lildevil:

Thanks for the dirt road cornering tips guys! This is more or less what I thought, less power into the turn, accelerate going out. I can't do this most of the time anyway - there are dogs in the back, they don't do well with sudden changes in direction.

Funny, when I was testing out subaru's and outbacks in the winter (car shopping), I experienced some crazy over steer, accelerating quickly from a stop, around a corner. I've never really experienced that with my forester, it's always been understeer with it.

Awesome! Love to see the big egos take a hit :monkeydance:

Cant wait for the first time I snatch out a big fourbie :rotfl:

Although awesome just be careful as 3tonnes pplus the force can damage our little Subies. Probably the reason my towbar is bent. I always offer advice and the use of my Maxtrax before offering a snatch.

If I can not damage my car I won't :raspberry:

And doesn't it upset them :poke: :monkeydance:

Trust me, it's a great feeling when you do.... At least for us anyway, maybe not for them though :o

just wanted some clarification on the auto subies.
i have a my04 forester xs auto and was wondering what the go is with selecting 1st and 2nd and locking the torque split? and what difference this makes compared to driving in D with torque split

Kevin can answer this with perfection. I'm pretty sure I know but he can explain.

If I had an auto I would do the centre diff lock switch.

yea i thought kevin was the man. i shall wait till he checks the thread. as its my fiance's car not realy going to be hard core bush bashing to need the lock mod

Locked in 1st or 2nd at 75% throttle the torque split is 50/50. The centre diff lock mod simulates this condition. Driving in D the split will vary from 90/10. So if the going gets tough, select 1st or 2nd.

so if were to selec 1st or 2nd but were not at 75% throttle is the torque split that same as if i were in D??
when in D that car will still go to the 60/40 split if there is slip?

Yes and yes.
Thats why with the diff lock mod it will split it 50/50 for Drive, 1st and 2nd (not sure on reverse). As ive seen it makes a huge difference for nearly any offroading and is easy to do.

well then i dont realy see the point on selecting 1st or 2nd when the system will do it itself

It takes longer to react and if your in sand it could mean you get bogged. On gravel I would rather have the AWD grip when cornering than it being 90% FWD basis like the Auto is (until 2009 onwards).
