Rally's MY04 Forrie- Poverty Pack special

Purchased second hand. Rear diff and instrument cluster replaced under warranty. First change was to fit CB UHF GME radio. Car has externally mounted windscreen aerial bracket. Just purchased set of new KYB shock absorbers- the originals have had it- will install when they arrive. Next step is to replace standard steel rims with MY99 WRX rims. Then sump guard and driving lights.

Seeing as you are strict with swapping your tyre back to road tyres when you are not off road, I would have gone up a size in tyre.

1)Yes.
2) In hindsight, I probably would have too. But I was concerned that with the different offset rim, the tyre might have rubbed the strut. But I think a 65 series tyre would have cleared it. I was also concerned at the effect of gearing- low range would have been affected. But really, I should have done more homework

I didn't find the change from 55 to 60 series made much difference in the drive of the car. The larger tyre does help once you are moving though.

Whereas previously I had found the low range to be sufficient in the places I went, it's new found off road ability means I have been able to go places previosuly I would not have been able to get to. This has shown up with the gearing becoming marginal in these places. So I don't really have room to move here. It's the old story- improve the car in one area and it highlights what is now a weakness elsewhere. So, I either change the low range ratio, get something like a supercharger or an H6. Or just work around it, which is what I will do.

Mate extra power only goes so far...

I have a diesel as you know, with a tune which makes a health 415nm of torque at 1600rpm. My mate has suzi grand vitara which is the crappy 2.4 petrol engine they use with the 4 speed auto. His car in low range is far more capable then my diesel in first. And before you say you have low range as well. remember my diesel also has 4.444 FD ratios so my first and your first low range are actually pretty similar.

Now that said my car is certainly better then his in some situations. Big muddy or sandy climbs where power is needed but his car generally i'd say is better because of it's gearing.

Suzi GV have a 1.8 ratio low range i believe.

If i was you I'd be putting the 1.61 ratio low range in an instant, If you are really keen go the whole hog, 1.6 low and 4.444 FD with the special 5th ratio from the GT foz so you aren't chewing through fuel.

While i get every where thus far my mate goes, being able to do it slower just makes it so much safe for him and his car.

Yea the 4.44 with no low range is absolutely no contest with any sort of decent low range (I'm not counting 1.19). Same with my H6 it was a 4.44 single range when I bought it, with the shorter STi gearing as well . Even going to 3.7 diffs the 1.59 ration low range made a phenomenal difference. Day and night.

Cheers for that. Whatever I do will be a way off, funds are required elsewhere. But I take your point. Ultimately, I suspect a Suzuki will defeat us off road even with all these mods we do, especially if they start doing mods as well

I was doing some calculations the other day. and too my suprise a subaru D/R 5speed, fitted with the 3.545 first gear + 1.61 low range + 4.444 FD actually give an overall final drive the same as a current model toyota prado. The Prados have a 2.2 ratio LR but they have a nice big 3Litre diesel so they get a pretty high first gear and FD. the difference is though, you can get custom low range gear sets for the prados all the way up to 4.8:1!!!!!!!

Yeah, but you are still stuck with having a Prado!

LOL. I was just trying to point out that we are doing that bad with some gearbox mods.

I love my Foz because it's good everywhere except crawling.

It's ok to compare our Foz with a Suzuki Grand Vitara, same size and weight, which is better off road when stock but not on tarmac or gravel.

The Prado is good off road but is also much heavier than our Foz, at least 600 kg, that means it's not "that" good.

Last summer, I went up a steep and muddy hill with my AT tires where only Defenders and Patrols with mud tires went up, I believe because of the weight.

Another trip, another puncture. Yokohama ATS tyres are rubbish. Holed another sidewall. Barely even walking pace, aired down. These tyres are a joke. Every trip I get a puncture. I did 6 trips across Australia on road tyres and only ever got one puncture.

Geez mate, thats not good, not good at all.
It seems like you've upset the tyre gods some how big time.

Regards
Mr Turbo

I reckon if they used a strip of aluminium foil they'd have a stronger sidewall.

Gidday Rally

That's a bugger, mate.

I went through a patch that lasted for about 3 years with Roo1. Had 1 or 2 punctures each year. Then it stopped. Weird :shake: :shake:

I seem to recall that I switched tyres in the middle of it, cos I needed new rubber too.

I think I've led more rally's car thread off track sorry mate.

me too, post deleted...

Another trip, another puncture

Mate you must have the WORST luck! :(:shake:

I think its time you contacted Yokohama, I'm sure they'd like to know whats happening & they might be able to do something for you.

Good luck mate, I really hope your run of punctures is over....

I'm looking at rally tyres now
