What tyres are you running on?

That's cool NachaLuva. I wasn't really traumatised just stunned for a few minutes!

Yeah sorry mate :o

40psi as recommended by the Subaru dealer that I got it from. Their reasoning was getting maximum mileage plus better fuel consumption out of them.

Be careful you're not wearing the centre of the tyre. There used to be a discussion on tyre pressures, most here run 36PSI. Rule of thumb is if both outsides of the tyres are wearing faster, the pressure is too low. If its the centre, the pressures too high. If just the outside edge, not enough negative camber, if just the inside edge, too much neg camber :iconwink:

You'll often see pit crews at motor races tsesting tyres temps at different points across the tyre surface...this is how they determine the correct camber for that track.

About a year ago (tyres having done around 75000km) I managed to steer/brake around a dog that ran out in front of me in a 60km zone. The car kept perfectly composed. But to think that I should dump a perfectly good set of tyres at 60000km just in case a kid's stupid enough to run out in front of me on a wet day is stretching things just a bit!

Not suggesting that lol. Glad you managed to get around the dog...would've got your heart racing!

I guess the test will be when you get your new tyres how much extra grip they have, remembering that as tyres get older the rubber compound hardens, which reduces wear but also reduces grip. Spinning wheels on bitumen or rock also speeds up this process

Edit. haha, I mentioned looking after my investment but I spend as much time as possible driving through salty sand!

Lol, you're lucky, we dont get much sand over here :(

^ Plenty of sand around here ...

Whole lots of people playing golf on it though ...

RMGC probably wouldn't appreciate a Subie in a sand trap ... :poke:

:rotfl:

hmm been a while since reading this thread.

Keep in mind - tyres save your lives and others - keep them in good condition

Rock hard tyres slide and do not grip - but will last a long time.

NachaLuva's comments (IMHO) about the cost of tyres vs the other ongoing costs is very pertinent - don't skrimp on keeping yourself and others alive, some components you can cut corners on - other parts it is very unwise to go the cheap option.

I am on my second set of Geolander AT/S - still very happy with these - first set got about 75,000 km could have gone a bit longer before hitting the wear indicators - but have no interest in risking myself or my family so got the second set, and there was a notable difference in grip even though the old ones were still "road worthy"

It is disappointing there is such a limited choice in the size on the Forester - obviously not enough demand in the sizing to prompt competition from manufacturers.

What Tyre Brand are you on?
Cooper Discoverer AT3

What Size are they?
235/60R17

What type are they - wet/dry
All-Terrain

Are they grippy or not?
They are grippier than the stock Geosquealers but the handling is worse because of the bigger sidewalls

Are they noisy or quiet?
They hum up to 40 mph then are quiet on the highway

Are they good for offroad or just onroad use?
Off - Road!!

What Life span are you getting out of them?
Rated for 50,000 miles, I currently have 6K miles on them.

Do you like them or not really?
I will buy another set when these wear out.

Well my Grandtrek AT3's I am at 32, 000km on them in just over a yes and they have almost had it. 1mm off the wear indicator.
**** scary in the wet, well below average in the dry. The compound in the tread was so soft you could move it around with your fingers when they were new.
When new they were ok inroads.
Now they roar anywhere about 60kmhr and are just generally rubbish.
I was however happy with the 225/70r15 size and the white sidewalls but at $240 a tyre they are rubbish.

^ That's pretty ugly, Taza!

I expect to get 55,000 to 65,000 kms out of a set of tyres, at the very least. The Yoki G95 on SWMBO's SH (225/55 17) appear to be the original tyres, and have done nearly 79,000 kms so far.

All four appear to have around 2 mm left until they hit the safety bars. They will possibly get to around 85,000-90,000 before they get the flick. The car will get a four wheel alignment check and body straightness check when the new tyres go on.

The G95s are not a bad tyre on road. Exceptional braking without any sign of break away or aquaplaning in the wet. Handling is terrific in the dry; not exceptional in the wet, but not horrible either. I have driven on far worse in my life!! Not at all noisy.

Not as quiet as the Michelin XM2 on Roo2 though. The handling isn't as good, either; specially not in the wet. The Michelins are exceptional tyres on road. The Michelins have around 5 mm tread depth to the wear bars (after 2,000+ kms). This is the same as that on the brand new Yoki G95 spare on the SH (never been on the car) and the G900 spare on Roo2, which has also never been on the car.

I will probably replace them with Bridgestone Potenza R002, as Michelin XM2 are out of the question expensive in this size! About $50 a corner more. Cheap as chips in Roo2's size - 215/60 16.

I was extremely impressed with the behaviour of the Bridgestone GR90 I put on Roo1 about 7,000 kms before I traded it in. On road wet and dry handling and braking were exceptionally good. The Police here in Victoria use these as their standard fitment. These tyres are no longer available in 225/55 17, or I would happily put them on the SH.

What Tyre Brand are you on? Firestone Destination a/t's
What Size are they? 205/75/r15
What type are they - wet/dry?
AT's:rolleyes:
Are they grippy or not? Good in wet, ok on dry roads
Are they noisy or quiet?
a little more road noise than road tiresAre they good for offroad or just onroad use? Seem pretty good on the gravel roads i've been on, nice amount of grip in some muddy spots, may as well be slicks in the clay around here.
What Life span are you getting out of them? 500km and no wear to see yet
Do you like them or not really?
they fit an sf forester stock, add a little bit of clearance so yep at this stage, will take abit of time to really know

has anyone tried these tyres on sand?

What tyres are you runnin on ?

What Tyre Brand are you on? Maxxis 751
What Size are they? 205x70x15
What type are they - All Terrain
Are they grippy or not? Fine on bitumen, excellent in sand, OK in mud
Are they noisy or quiet? Quiet
Are they good for offroad or just onroad use? Good for both
What Life span are you getting out of them? Changed last set at 45,000 km primarily to keep outside rolling circumference of tyres matching. I probably could have gotten another 10.000km out of them
Do you like them or not really? Very happy with them

has anyone tried these tyres on sand?

Haven't had any problem in sand, but I doubt they are any better than most A/t's in sand. about 65,000km done, no punctures and should be another 10,000km rotation before looking at new ones. Treds road legal but definitely notice the lack of tred depth offroad now

2001 Forester limited duel range

What type are they AT
Are they grippy or not? yet to see
Are they noisy or quiet? yet to see
Are they good for offroad or just on road use? I am expecting great things from them offroad as well as being safe and grippy on road.
What life span are you getting out of them? yet to see
Do you like them or not really? I like that I was able to score them for 135 a Tyre and I have heard glowing reviews about them offroad and I have heard good reviews about them on road most complaints on road I here about them are from Triton owners.......(not sure why its Tritons but it is).......

I am booked in a week from today to have these fitted and I cant wait to play with them off road especially mud (I know they aren't and MT but I am curious to see the different coming from Kenda radial fronts and hancook rears all in HT patterns to A the same brand all around and B an all terrain pattern.

215X65X16 Dueller 697`s.
Covered about 30000 km and are ok .
Not much wear obvious yet but what there is is very even. Rotate all 6 every 5000 km.
I need all the exercise I can get...........

What Tyre Brand are you on?
Michelin Latitude Cross

What Size are they?

215/70R16. ( originals: Yokahama 225/70-17 OEMs)

OK had them long enough to have a fair idea. Had them in the dirt, dirt roads and very long trips.
The difference in ride compared to the OEM ultralows is incredible. Hugely more comfortable and QUIETER!. Car no longer tram tracks as much. On dirt roads at speed VERY stable and controlled.
They definitely reduce fuel economy though so now I change back to the std rims/tyres for long trips. Roughly .5 to 1.0 litres/100km extra fuel used. They came with 42psi in them and after experimenting I have it back up there. Must be a Michelin thing as I found my motorcycle tyres like more pressure than most on the bitumen and still had good feel.

What type are they - wet/dry:
All terrain ( and not a bad description in this case.
Are they grippy or not?
OH YEAH!!! Suspect not mudder level in really low traction stuff though. Tar and dirt roads faultless.
Are they noisy or quiet?
Actually quieter than the ULP stock.
Are they good for offroad or just onroad use? Probable suitable for anything the car is capable of doing
What Life span are you getting out of them? Still too soon to tell but 10k and can't see ANY wear.
Do you like them or not really?
VERY definitely except fuel economy. They seem to be designed as a four wheel drive tyre. Getting them to do the wrong thing takes a lot of effort. Very sure footed on loose dirt roads. You will find yourself going waaay too fast and not notice.
Toottling down a dirt road thinking I was doing 100kph and I was doing 130...
Found out they work very well with the ABS on dirt as well ( at speed).Had Michelins AT tyres on my Prado a few tears ago and kept staking them. These seem a lot tougher.
The tyre/rim set ended up lighter than the originals.

Hey all,

What Tyre Brand are you on? - Cooper

What Size are they?- 215/70/16

What type are they? - Mud and Snow

Are they grippy or not? - **** yes

Are they noisy or quiet?- Not much more than stock.

Are they good for offroad or just onroad use?- Amazing for offroad.

What Life span are you getting out of them?- I have only had them 500 miles.

Do you like them or not really? I love them. I was worried about loss of power and fuel economy but it isn't bad at all. I prefer the traction over the power anyways seeing has how this isn't a turbo. If they hold up to 60/70k I would buy them again in a heart beat.

I recently switched to General Grabber ATs for a trip to the desert. I was apprehensive as no-one here had tried them out yet but they have been amazing. They gave me so much more confidence off road, yet I don't seem to have noticed any tradeoff on bitumen.

I got the 215/65R16 (normally use 60s), and I thought it would blow out the fuel consumption but nothing has changed. The torquey turbo seems to nullify the extra few mm of rolling diameter.

Very grippy, very slight noise but not an issue.

These tyres got me across steep soft sand dunes, sloshy mud, slippery clay and flooded roads. In all conditions during the 6500km they have been excellent. So far they look new still, no wear detectable yet.

I do love these tyres, they look great and give me a bit more confidence in the rough stuff, but I really liked my old Michelin XM2s and sometimes I think I would've still made the last trip without the ATs.

Have the same tires as you know and will buy the same set when they will die. Only had one puncture on a sidewall going up a rocky track in Corsica.

Are they grippy or not?
Dry: excellent; Wet: yet to see - expect them to be excellent.

Are they noisy or quiet?
OK; don't squeal ... :iconwink:

Are they good for offroad or just on road use?
I am expecting great things from them on road as being safe and grippy on road in wet and dry. SWMBO's car never goes further onto the dirt than the side of the road. Roo1 (my 1993 Impreza) had Bridgestone Turanza GR90 tyres on it, and they were excellent on road tyres.

What life span are you getting out of them?
yet to see. 50K Kms factory guarantee.

Do you like them or not really?
Much more comfortable and better handling than the Yokohama G95 which had been on the car since new. They still had a fair amount of wear left on them, but were very hard. They had 99,907 Kms on them! Probably had another 20K Kms (legal).

Price:
4 for 3 price offer. $235 each. Four tyres fitted, balanced and with full 4 wheel alignment = $750.

hey guys,

What Tyre Brand are you on?
OB: BFG TA KO2 for trips, aging Geolander ATS for DD
TB: Nitto 420S

What Size are they?
OB: 225 65 17
TB: 255 55 18

What type are they - wet/dry
Are they grippy or not?
OB KO2: excellent
OB Geolander ATS: poor in corners, awful under hard braking, old design shows.
TB: outstanding

Are they noisy or quiet?
OB KO2: noisier than any other tire I have had but acceptable
OB ATS: hardly any extra noise over street tire
TB: quiet
Are they good for offroad or just onroad use?
OB KO2: once KO2, always KO2. Exceptional at lower pressures.
OB ATS: never had a serious issue on two sets. The fact that it is P-metric with weaker sidewalls makes it unsuitable for frequent low pressures/tougher conditions. Not as good grip on dirt as other AT tires. But a lot better offroad than on road. Cannot really complain since it got me everywhere I wanted to go without punctures. Not stellar but very good.
TB: Nitto 420S is a performance street tire, not really for offroad but I am sure it can handle it if needed
What Life span are you getting out of them?

My tires do go offroad and when they do, it is not just sand.Lots and lots of rocks. Since I have always enjoyed excellent wear on tires that stay on pavement and viceversa, it stands to reason that the harsh terrain is the culprit.
OB, KO2 : getting the pressures right was a bit of a challenge, 44 on road seems the correct pressure for even wear. Starting strong, then deteriorated, then better again. Too early to tell but about 3,500 miles per 1/32 of thread with about 10% offroad.

OB, ATS: About 5,000-maybe 6,000 miles per 1/32 thereafter with about 5% offroad.

TB, 420S: this one is wearing very well. No offroad though.

Do you like them or not really?

OB KO2: amazing for offroad and great on road performance but not as comfortable as P-metric tires, noisier, too. Best tire for trip but not sure I want to run it all the time.

OB ATS: cannot wait for the second set to completely wear down. On the flip side, the ride is exceptional and the mediocre street performance helps keep overall car wear low...

TB Nitto 420S: amazing tire. Expected to become noisy at about 20,000 miles per reviews. We are at about that much and it is still very quiet. Still exceptional cornering and braking.

17s

What Tyre Brand are you on?
Yokohama RV-01
What Size are they? 215/55 R17
What type are they - wet/dry Both
Are they grippy or not? Very, very grippy, especially in the wet
Are they noisy or quiet? Very quiet
Are they good for offroad or just onroad use? Both | I don't air down that much with these 55-series tyres
What Life span are you getting out of them? These came with the second-hand/import car but the I have only used ~.5mm in the last 9,500km.
Do you like them or not really? I like them a lot but they are almost exclusively for the Japanese Market. The carcass is designed for taller vehicles, including people movers so there isn't that much distortion on the shoulders, hence the decent wear, especially in places where roundabouts are the abundant. I will keep the 17s if I will work on paved areas more but will probably be putting Yokohama G055 H/Ts for 5 to 10% off-road use.

16s

What Tyre Brand are you on?
HiFly HF-201 | I was after the 16s and these came with them.
What Size are they? 215/65 R16
What type are they - wet/dry Both | It says M + S but the tread pattern says otherwise
Are they grippy or not? Generally, they are not, especially in 50 to 100kph corners and they wear like crazy.
Are they noisy or quiet? Relatively quiet but there is a somewhat noticeable humming noise at 100 kph.
Are they good for offroad or just onroad use? on-road; They chip aggressively off road.
What Life span are you getting out of them? Very low | The tyres were made in 2016 and upon buying the set, they had 6.3 and 6.2mm, but after 5000km, they are already at 4.5km. As said before, they chip very aggressively so my RV-01s look much newer even though they are 4 years older.
Do you like them or not really? No. with them, I steering feedback is poor. They hydroplane relatively easily. The wear patterns are uneven. I will convert to G015s if I will continue with this wheel size.

Note: I found 15" BGWs that will clear my brakes and are just 13mm farther from the hub in terms of offset. The stock 15" Impreza RXi/SRX wheels clear but they are too tucked in (12mm closer to the hub). I will fit 205/70 R15s on these as they have the same diameter as the 215/55 R17s. I plan to keep the original diameter because the 215/65 R16 ones are 2.7% bigger and the power/torque loss is very evident with 140HP 2.0 with SportShift 4EAT

Car: Forester SG 2004

What tyre brand are you on? Bridgestone Potenza RE002

What size are they? 2215/60 16 (factory size)

What type are they: Hi Performance road tyre

Are they grippy or not? Dry: excellent; Wet: excellent.

Are they noisy or quiet? OK; don't squeal ...

Are they good for offroad or just on road use? Excellent on road and off.

What life span are you getting out of them? Had them for a while, can't remember when I put them on

Do you like them or not really? Fantastic tyre. Never let me down, be it for grip or punctures. After all the bad experiences with all terrain tyres, I couldn't be happier. Allows me to really have fun on road, yet still have the avility few Foresters in this country can match

Price: 4 for 3 price offer. Too long ago, I can't remember
