El Freddo's Journal.

G'day all,

I got this yesterday:

p2280104.jpg

^ That's how it stood this morning.

This is what I did to it today:

p2280108.jpg

I thought I'd share that for a start as I'm pretty excited about it. As for my subi that I cherish (not as much as you though Kez if you're reading...) the largest contribution to the forum about it was the EJ conversion that it underwent last september.

Here's a pic of Ruby Scoo in the Little Dip NP, Robe, SA:

I'll leave it at that but will share more in the coming weeks as a few projects come to fruitation :) Can't wait but need some parts, hence why I'm not working on them now...

Cheers

What the??? That is one seriously cool toy :monkeydance:

It's a cheap fleabay gps unit - I've "borrowed" it from dad for a while, this is the "dash display" which is best for viewing the speedo...

Cheers

Mr.T, I like that one too. It shows off the L, highlights it against the sky...great photo! Another good one Bennie

Only thing missing is a snorkel :iconwink:

I know! It's killing me not having the means to sort this out at the moment... I'll need it if we head to Walhalla, I've removed the guard box thing, and I think that would actually help in a water crossing - gives the water further to travel before my air filter...

Cheers

I have a question about the rear springs.. does it effect the wear on the rear shocks? I could imagine springs lifting the rear a little more might extend the shocks further than their recommended working zone

Old original shocks will flog out when ever they want, regardless of spring type in use. I have not noticed any different wear on the rear shocks. If the shocks are extended beyond their working zone then you've blown it/topped it out/bottomed it out. I've not had this with these springs.

What I have done was knock off the bottom spring seat from a shot shock not providing any resistance to the action of the spring. Plus the vehicle was well loaded and I hit a pot hole while doing the legal limit around a bend that put all the weight of the vehicle onto the side with the dud shock - BANG! Fun fun. Spares are carried now in the event that this happens again, but with new shocks I've not experienced the lead up to the failure - plus the gas shocks make the rear end sit higher :D

ok, that's what I wanted to know before going ahead with that. Hopefully I'll be buying a bunch of upgrades for the little wagon over the next few weeks
:D

Wow, a whole year to the day since an update!

Quite a bit has happened in that year:

- AWD conversion with locking centre diff and 4.111:1 ratio diffs
- Under bonnet storage compartment
- new windscreen with rust repair
- snorkel fitted
- and now a blown head gasket :(

Some pics:

Snorkel fitted from a NH/NJ/NK pajero, similar bending required as to the forester mod.

Under windscreen rust repair/maintenance

It seems like it's been a big year! That's it in a nutshell.

I'm happy to answer any questions. For now it's head down, bum up as I work on this bloody HG issue. At least I didn't overheat her!

Cheers

Looking awsome as always El_freddo, Whats the sort list of parts for the awd conversion and locking center, is it a dccd thing?

Annoying how everything else gets in the way of my build, and only having 1 car i need on the road. Maybe its time i went and got an l series or brumby as well

You need an L series AWD gearbox to start off with. Not easy to find! They're an open centre diff with a dog clutch lockout mechanism. I'll post some pics once on the computer.

Other stuff that's happening, well, gearbox. Not impressed but I blew second gear on a gentle section of the Dedick Tk last November. After some issues and further modding of some pieces it looks like everything is about to be sweet once again.

Almost ready to lift the box back in from under the car using a motor cycle jack :D

Pretty sweet ;) Not centre LSD though...

Buy a real 4wd! :iconwink:

Ummm... but I've already got one! Or are you talking to yours reflection again :poke:

I'll find the parts for a forester retrofit of the ft4wd diff lock one day, got the ej22 now though! Thanks for the photos though I'm in shep for uni atm so can't really do much searching for a box.

"Lucky you!" For how long, just the week or a semester? We should meet up if time allows. I might know of a lead or two on one of these locking boxes. I can make some inquiries if you wish.

Cheers

Nar i was only in shep for 9 days of lectures! think we scared the locals when bunch of post grad students went to flanagans and started debating politics and economics.

If you've got a lead on a center lock I'd be very interested...

Well it's been a few years since I've updated this thread

I'm pleased to say that since the gearbox rebuild all has been good! The gearbox after blowing second gear in my AWD locking box with phase1 EJ cases, L series 1.59:1 low range and front OBX LSD with 4.111:1 diff ratio ended up being shoved into a set of phase2 cases. What I learnt was that phase 2 gearing doesn't fit into phase 1 cases and allow everything to work - reverse won't engage.

So I was forced into the phase 2 cases. New auxiliary oil feeders were fitted, and the 5th ratio swapped to something that I thought would be better, but got it wrong when I thought I had the correct ratio - I'm still running the same ratio but would like to swap it out at some point. So I'm pulling 3000rpm at 100km/h, only about 250 less than the stock L series box.

Anyway, she's been a few places since the gearbox build and is now on to the third house move since my last post!

We did our first solo trip to the Strathbogie ranges. A great place to tour around, a bit small overall without too much serious offroading to play on. But some speccie views!

Our next big, and I mean BIG trip was to Perth over the summer of 2015/2016. We had two issues - a dead radiator (ebay special, should've know better with 300km or corrugations to get to Hayden) and later a broken pinion shaft in the gearbox (don't ask, but due to Subarino having an awesome bunch of mates we had it sorted in three or so days to get us home!). Highlights:

43*C ambient air temps across here was fun with AC that didn't want to play ball... Awesome drive though!

300km of this was bliss!
