El Freddo's Journal.

G'day all,

I got this yesterday:

p2280104.jpg

^ That's how it stood this morning.

This is what I did to it today:

p2280108.jpg

I thought I'd share that for a start as I'm pretty excited about it. As for my subi that I cherish (not as much as you though Kez if you're reading...) the largest contribution to the forum about it was the EJ conversion that it underwent last september.

Here's a pic of Ruby Scoo in the Little Dip NP, Robe, SA:

p1290527.jpg

I'll leave it at that but will share more in the coming weeks as a few projects come to fruitation :) Can't wait but need some parts, hence why I'm not working on them now...

Cheers

Bennie

^haha. That's ridiculous.

Brilliant vid mate. It's fan:newmulti:tastic:newmulti:

Regards
Mr Turbo

Video says it all!!! Excellent.

Just wait until the locker comes along  I'm really hoping this goes ahead - then a front one too   That would be true point and shoot!

I'm starting to thing about a torsen front diff in the new gearbox - just more $$$ for the build but think it would be worth it.

Cheers

Pics of the huge milestone achieved by Ruby Scoo. She then went on to do roughly another 300/400 kms to get us home without missing beat :D

Almost there:

Bingo!
p6300317.jpg

And still going :p

Also got this:

^ I'm thinking of mounting the scoop (from a vortex) about where it is in the pic. What i might look at doing for a neater fit is make a mould of the scoop, cut it down to size so that it fits between ridge lines of the bonnet. The fins in the scoop have been damaged since I last saw it so I'll probably replace this with some mesh or another reproduced mould of the original if I ever get around to it.

p7010324.jpg

I also grabbed the vent ducting from under the scoop - glad I did as I'll probably either cut this down or make another one so that it "scoops" the air from the direction of the radiator as well as acts as a drain for any water that makes its way down there. I'm also thinking of trying to make a flap so that I can shut it off when in the cold weather. I've found that the EJ "runs hotter" in cold weather because the radiator is bigger than it needs to be in those conditions - so I don't want a vent moving more air through the radiator at speed in this situation.

And now this has happened - two weeks ago now but I've only been able to pull Ruby apart last weekend to find out exactly what the culprit was.

Basically we were headed off mountain to visit mates from summer in Lakes Entrance. Half way off the mt and I couldn't use the clutch, it had become very hard in operation and wouldn't let slip. So rev matching it was for the rest of our journey. I'd organised to leave the subi at a mate's place to pull her apart for the fix on our return. Only problem was that after about 300km of great rev match driving something gave up and we were not going any further. This was 55km south of Omeo and a good 150km from Hotham.

RACV total care was called once we found reception (had to go for a walk). We got towed back to the place I'd pre arranged and got a ride back up the mount from my bro that came down to collect us - I ended up an hour late for work but had already told the boss about my little dilemma.

Here's where we stopped on the Great Alpine Rd beside the Tambo River:

p7130423.jpg

And this is what I found once the engine was lifted - one VERY dirty engine bay:

p7230481.jpg

The clutch, things looking odd in the centre:

p7230482.jpg

How it came out:

p7230483.jpg

All the bits minus one chunk that is MIA:

p7230485.jpg

Fatigue cracks:

p7230489.jpg

So now I'm waiting on parts to arrive so I can hopefully have her back together this weekend all going well... I only got about 50,000km out of the clutch before this happened!

Muthafu$%er. That is an absolute mess. Good luck getting it fixed.

:censored: me what a mess

Hope you have your Subi back on the road (I should say OffRoad) really soon.

Like what garrettG said, be sure that the MIA piece isn't stuck or caught up in there somewhere.

Regards
Mr Turbo

yeah it's messy but not as bad as it could have been - I prefer this than the gearbox!

That piece that's MIA could have gone months ago - then allowed a spring to start to dislodge until it came out enough to screw around with the operation of the clutch disengaging action, fatigue cracks may have been happening before this as well :(

Even if that chunk is hiding well in the pressure plate it won't matter as I'm getting a new kit sorted for it, just waiting on its arrival!

Then depending on my health (got a bug :() and the parts arrival time I could have her back in one piece this saturday all going well!

Cheers

A "half week late" update:

Well I've had some very productive shed time last week totalling about 8ish hours in total from EJ on shed floor dirty to installed and running with everything where it should be.

A story in pics:

Machined flywheel - no more cracks, just heat stress marks I presume:

p8180006l.jpg

In the middle of replacing the rear main seal:

p8180008.jpg

Showing the difference between the old cam cover seal and the new:

p8180015c.jpg

With a lot of cleaning the new seal is in place and the cover is ready to be installed back on the side of the EJ:

p8180016.jpg

Machined flywheel, new clutch pressure plate and clutch disc. Rob (shed host) made me a clutch alignment tool but it turned out that I got this one spot on by eye - or close enough to it:

p8180018.jpg

And this is how I left Ruby Scoo on Thursday night:

p8180024k.jpg

:D

Friday I got all the auxiliaries installed/put back where they should be, slotted the radiator in, re-mounted the three thermos (easier than expected), filled her with coolant and got her fired up after finding an engine plug not fully engaged - codes galore!

After finally getting her to fire up and run properly I adjusted the clutch and took her for a drive. Very happy that she's mobile again but not real happy with the feel of the clutch. I'm hoping this will be a "wear in" thing or it could just be me getting used to a different clutch. I'm thinking I should have wound out the pivot ball a little for the clutch fork.

So now she's parked on a hill after the run, battery disconnected for code clearing. Pulls like a trogan, LOVE the EJ in the L series

I'd like to take this moment to thank the boys at O'Dea's Auto Spares in Romsey (Tom, Chris and Dave - 5429 5114) and FROG on the ausubi forum for sending many parts up to me at Hotham; and Ric at the mechanics in Omeo (Billy's ski hire one, can't remember the business name) for the initial tow and the machining of the flywheel. Without these fellas the task would have been much more drawn out and difficult. Special thanks goes to Rob and Robin whom let me use this sweet as shed for the work!

And I'd better mention Chaddy who let me drive this beast to get to Ruby Scoo to work on:

p8180022.jpg

^ Sweet subi to drive but doesn't feel like it's got the balls that Ruby Scoo has - corners VERY well

Sundy saw Ruby have all the final checks and a can of UECleaner put through... Smoke plume here we come!

Here's what I got up to before I took her for a drive to Omeo.

One can of Upper Engine Cleaner into the EJ - I was expecting the massive/impressive plume that Owen's old liberty got when we were down at Aire River when he put a can through, this is about all I got:

p8210031b.jpg

p8210030.jpg

Then I thought I'd take the mickey with this pic, basically copying the one from friday:

p8210032.jpg

^ Only problem is that the sun was not behind a cloud this time so Ruby Scoo was in complete shadow...

The EJ all complete and running:

p8210034.jpg

And in Omeo out the front of the Golden Age Hotel:

p8210042.jpg

The clutch issue that I've got as mentioned is most likely because I have not touched the piviot on the clutch fork. I'm not sure how much meat was taken off the flywheel - probably should have taken a photo of the thickness before it when in and what it is now to compare. Anyway... I guess i'll pull the engine again near christmas to make it right - for now I'll have to not push real hard to use the clutch as it's not going all the way to the floor, I think this is due to the pivot not being pushed out and the clutch fork is now hitting the bell housing when I put the foot in...

Stoked that she's going again! Love that subi note, something the liberty lacks - I'm trying to change that though without luck!

Cheers

Bennie

Thanks Kevin, nothing out of the ordinary, just not at the best of times!

In other news today Kez and I went for a long drive in Ruby Scoo after hitching a ride with a mate to his place to pick her up. It was great.

We passed through Omeo, a great little town, I love the sleepy atmosphere of this place!

After grabbing some burgers with the lot for breakfast (yes, we're healthy!) we headed to Hinnomunji bridge for some fishing. It was very windy so we ate and left - headed to the Blue Duck Inn. A great little pub for a feed - opens again on Sept 1st. If anyone happens to be visiting I'd highly recommend booking a seat/table in advance then get there early to secure a table by the fire! This place has to generate it's own power due to the remote location. The road out to here is a motorcyclists dream, wish I had a tuned WRX for this drive... Love hearing that EJ doing its thing. Here we are at the Blue Duck Inn with the old wooden bridge - the pub has some great historical photos of the place from the beginning too:

p8250061.jpg

p8250065.jpg

We continued on to Joker's Flat - a campground that Subaruby, Kez and I stayed at last year on our offroading trip last September, plan was to do some fishing but we ended up sleeping for about 2-3 hours! Lovely area and we had it to ourselves, the river was up with the ice melt, I'd say about a foot to a foot and a half by the look of the vegetation under water. I didn't catch anything in the half hour I had a go at throwing a lure in - haven't had any luck in this section of the Mitta so nothing surprising there. Here's Ruby Scoo on the banks where the camp grounds are:

p8250071.jpg

I've still got a code or two to sort out - on start up no check engine light, give it 15-20 seconds and the check engine code shows up. When we fuelled up in Omeo we got 158km to 13.5L which is awesome! The drive out and back from the Joker's Flat is not straight by a long shot and I wasn't taking it easy either! Pretty stoked with that, hopefully it stays this way and that can of upper engine cleaner actually did something! We'll see what happens here soon I guess.

Best bit is this:

p8250072.jpg

^ Ruby Scoo back in staff parking where she should have been for 99.9% of the season! No snow around anymore, it's looking really dismal up here even though there's still an average of about 70cm of base snow (read: ice block) left...

So a few things to iron out, need to clean out the interior then look at the steering - new rack ends to go on, already got new tie rod ends and ball joints, then a wheel alignment is in order. After this I'll be looking at the brakes - got a seal kit for the front callipers and will be looking at a new brake master cylinder as well as extended braided brake lines at each corner. I've got new discs to go on as well - had them for a while now just haven't done anything with them... Going to be busy when I get home!

Cheers

Bennie

Thought I'd just put this out there. I really love this pic and have it as a desktop pic - I think I wet my pants everytime I see it!

This was taken just after getting the scorpions and was taken on this angle so you can't see my wife's VT behind it :D

I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do!

Cheers

Wow, that looks awesome

Mutton dressed as lamb is how I'd probably describe her! Sad but true as she's rough as guts when you see her in person!

But yes, that photo is awesome!

Cheers

Bennie

I want to see the scorpions in black! The black 13's really set of the blue paint in those pics.

Some Ruby Scoo p0rn:

Loving those scorpions.

But I've got to do some work on Ruby Scoo - found something that sends a shiver down every subaru owner's spine. More on that once I've dealt with it!

Cheers

Bennie

Don't tell me you've got some seals leaking...
:sadbanana:

No... Need to do some welding and then probably some bracing shortly after that.

She'll be right for the Robe and LDNP trips ;)

Cheers

Bennie

Hmmm - some seam mending or cracked towers perhaps? :iconwink: You've raised our curiosity!
