What have you done to your car today?

TLC for MY05 forester X

Well my subie has done a few k's, clock shows 180 or so however as
The speedo was not working for 7 mrs or so I'm giving it some 200,000
Km loving. Timing belt kit and water pump ordered, to be installed by fleet
Mechanic at work(good rates for employees cars) who will also do radiator and gearbox/ diff oils.
I replaced the iridium plugs with some fancy Bosch ones, will see how they go.
Also have been DIY window tinting, with some pretty good results. Side windows are done, need a heat gun to get rear window done. As ive been removing the inside trim to tint windows I've given all the carpet and insides a good clean. I'm also running some 6mm cable from rear to enginebay, I'm working out how to charge the 75 amp thumper installed in wife's pathfinder, I have a cunning plan that I will post separately when it works out.

Any other suggestions for how to show my subie some love before a trip from Alice to east gippsland and return in 3 weeks? I'm also after 2 or 3 steel rims for my trailer project if anyone knows some where along the way I can pick some up.
Cheers matt

Spare hoses and belts, plenty of water and a sense of humour. Might also want to replace the tensioner with the timing belt and check the other pulleys while you're at it. Maybe a second spare

Washed off the mud.

Tomorrow I'll -

  • replace the punctured tyre - side wall,
  • hopefully, fix the slow leak in the right front, and
  • trim the rear skirt and fit pinch weld.

Ordered some parts from the US for Ruby Scoo who's a little worse for wear since:

Apart from the wheel bearings being done, since being in the shed Ruby's thrown some bearings from one of her idler pulleys on the cam belt - ran like a dog and sounded loads worse... lucky it happened in the shed as I'd just completed a round 600km trip!

So a cam belt kit for a little over half the price of an Oz unit including shipping will be here shortly, hopefully with enough time for me to fit it, put ruby back together before the Robe Trip arrives - its quickly approaching too!

Cheers

Drove her to work, when I got home 20mins ago I found some mail for me. My stickers from offroadsubarus.com and foresters.org had arrived so I added my offroadsubarus.com sticker to her back window :) And am about to take her for a ride to the shops :)

Great stuff, you'll have to post a pic when you get a chance. :)

And don't forget to up the value of your insurance too, now that you have the stickers on your Subi

Subaru magic!

IT REALLY DOES WORK!

Alright I went to the shops like I planned about an hour ago. I no I shouldnt push my car hard until the oil leak is fixed but I couldnt help myself. On my way home their is a turn off road onto a 4WD track. I have been on it before and been stuck with the car all geared up, in low range and with the tiress let down. It is a bit of a 4WD circit that is pure boggy sand with hills, tight corners and just fun. I have seen so called 'real 4WDs' bogged there because once you get stuck and/or stop you are usually in a hard situation to get out of. ie on a hill/coner stuck in beach sand.
So anyway since I put that www.offroadsubarus.com sticker on a few hours ago I thought there might be some magic in it. Well everyone says it makes your cars value double  and look awesome and enhance the performance so why cant it work magic wonders in the action. Any I turned down this road completely unprepared and thought if I should go down the track, especially since my car is leaking, im unprepared, alone and its nearly dark. I thought stuff it lets see what happens, if worse comes to worse its only a 5-10min walk home. So without stopping I dropped down to second and floored it and went onto the track. Stayed in 1st and 2nd gear foot nearly flat the whole time. Had a great time, didnt get stuck once, not even close. She performed well and now she deserves a reward  Time for a service next week when my mechanics back open, a good clean and to be modded in the next few months.

It really does work magic wonders

Also this is the best forum ever :discomonkey:

Well, my impromptu wheel alignment was reasonably close to the mark, all things conisdered. Car is beautiful, and I consider myself doubly happy. The Forrie is a ball to drive offroad, and I can take it camping and do the things I like more than anything else. The WRX is just a ripper bit of kit. How can something so cheap be so fast and have such incredible traction on street tyres? It allows me to do the things that are second only to what the Forrie allows me to do. I feel I have the best of both my worlds and am a very happy little vegemite.

Yes it does. Now in 3months time it will be lift, sumped (Subaxtreme style), guarded, equipt with UHF radio, big 215/75R15 tires and me behind the wheel with a bit more experience ready for a big offroad trip. Maybe by the end of the year when I have time off I might come over east for a month or so. Drive over. Meet some of you people and maybe go offroading. I want to travel that would be a good way to do it.

Wheel Alignment for 2" lifted suspension.

Spent a hour on the wheel alignment machine this morning. Finally have the Whiteline camber adjusters on the back adjusted. They are a real b!tch, as there isn't a tool available to fit the adjusting holes. Necessitated removal of wheel and use of vice grips! really!? Anyway, rear is now good and front toe adjusted, so hopefully I will stop scrubbing rear tyres. ... May have to get some steel front lift blocks fabricated with top holes offset, to fix front camber. Just need to find a fabricator.

You can also adjust the rear camber- and toe too for that matter, with adjustable lateral arms.

On my Impreza, I'm running -2 neg camber on the rear with a small amount of toe in

Thanks for the pic Rally,
Looks like they are available commercially, for the Impreza at least, and that they might potentially fit the Outback. (Perhaps with a modified connection for the sway bar link, which is effectively non structural.)
Will have to do a bit of investigating.
Look like these babies: https://www.whiteline.com.au/product_detail.php?part_number=KTA107

These https://www.whiteline.com.au/product_detail.php?part_number=KTA124&page=2 are shown as compatible with the 'BP' model Liberty / Legacy, but not the Outback. Anyone know if this would be an issue? i.e. Is there any relevant difference between the Outback and the Liberty / Legacy in the 'BP' model (05 model year) that would make them non-compatible?

If not, seems that this might be worth looking at as well, although it still doesn't address the front end. ...

Yes they are Whiteline- and yes, it looks like they have them for the Libs. Cannot see why they would not fit the Outback

I know you are not keen on enlarging the holes on the struts where the upright bolts to the hubs- and I understand your concern. I know guys with WRX's who have succesfully run with this modification on the race track over some time. The only other alternative I can think of is adjustable strut tops.

Front camber issues.

Dead right on all counts Rally, however Whiteline tell me that they have 'no plans' to make adjustable strut tops for the 05-09 Model. :(

Hence my thinking that I need 'off-set bolt' strut top blocks. Was thinking perhaps of contacting 'Crossbreed'. Anyone had any recent experience of their work?

(Should emphasise that i have longer springs as well as the subtle strut top blocks. Either on their own would not have this degree of problem / possibly maintain neutral - negative camber.)

EDIT: OK, looks like this might be the solution for the front end!

Gave my Forry a late xmas present today in the way of a full detox. :)

Changed the engine oil & filter, front diff & gearbox oil, rear diff oil, power steering fliud, flushed, bled & changed the brake fluid, radiator flush & pressure test, petrol filter & upper engine clean.

Also replaced a couple of belts while I was at it aswell (a/c belt drive & power steering belt) as they were starting to show signs of wear.

On top of that the tyres were rotated aswell.

Now my Forry is a happy chappy & drives like a dream. :woohoo:
