Sydney day trip? 15th or 16th Aug?

I think Damo and myself won't be too upset if we never do Stockton again LOL. Perhaps if there's interest there could be two groups. One to the Hunter Range and one to Stockton. There's no rules that we all have to do the same trip.

Rally, yeah day trip only this time though I think we should plan the 3 treks around Newnes as a weekend sometime in Sep.

just_bj I have an idea for a trip or two south after winter. I'm just conerned that there may be snow etc ATM.

I'm good for the Saturday then.

So it looks like the Watagans or Sheet Skin Hut - it this off the Putty Road?

Apsilon - some trips south sound good.

Yes, Hunter Range goes off Putty Rd. It's basically the western side of Yengo whereas we did more the eastern side before winter.

So Hunter Range it is?

OK, unless someone has a better suggestion how about we meet at Macquarie Park just outside Windsor? Is 9am too early?

It's about a 72km run up Putty Rd to the start of the intended circuit. I suggest arriving at the meeting point with enough fuel to cover 250km as I don't know what services will be available along the way.

BYO lunch. I could bring a gas stove if we want to bring some snags etc to cook up.

My suggestion for a meeting place would be the second BP servo at Kurmond. It means that upon departure, there are lights to break up the convoy. Also allows re-fueling of both cars and people, and pistops for people. Damo, can we meet up at the usual place say 0730?

I'm easy if that suits better. It's about 15km longer going out that way for anyone who has to pass Windsor which is why I suggested the other meeting point.

ohh man thats gonna take ages to get there from newy, hopefully i dont get lost im hopeless gettin places, whats the track like that yous are planned to go on? how many are going so far?

Gees you lot are demanding LOL. I was assuming Sat as it's what seemed to suit most (all?)mav, if you're coming I'd suggest you meet us at the start point rather than the meeting point. Check google maps for Putty Valley Rd where it intersects with Putty Rd. I think you'd be ebtter off coming across passed Cessnock and meeting up with Putty Rd and coming down from the north rather than coming right down to Richmond and back up again. What do you think?

May, coming from Shaky Town will be very easy. Stay on the freeway till Wahroonga, continue on to Pennant Hills Rd, turn right at the M2. Continue on to the M7. Take the Richmond Rd exit, turn right at the lights and follow the signs to Richmond (or Windsor as the case may be) Just make sure you pay your tolls afterwards if you do not have a tag. I think you have 48 hours. You may even be able to pre-pay.

Just to re-cap Apsilon, is this correct for Sydney folk -

Meeting time: Saturday 15th Aug, 9am
Meeting place: BP servo, Bells Line of Road, Kurmond

Mav - I tend to agree with Apsilon. From Newie it will be quicker for you to meet us near the start point of the offroad stuff rather than come all the way down to Windsor. From Newie you can either go

1. Newie - Cessnock - Broke - Fordwich - Mibrodale Road - Putty Road (turn left) - Putty Valley Road

--OR--

2. Newie - Maitland - Branxton - Mt Thorley - Putty Road - Putty Valley Road

If you haven't got a map or satnav maybe grab a printout from Google Maps if you're like me and are not too good at navigating on-the-fly :iconwink:

(PS: Lol for comments about Stockton - I remember seeing photos/comments on the old site of the trip you are talking about - not pleasant, but you got home ok. Hopefully you boys aren't too scarred from that still and will go back some time.)

That's right but I believe it's the 2nd BP servo coming out of Richmond. We'll probably be in UHF range of either so if you're on your own you can always call out.

I have a shocking memory. What channel are we usually on?

Damo, can we meet up at the usual place say 0730?
Sounds good to me Rally, see you there. :)

I was assuming Sat as it's what seemed to suit most (all?)
That suits me. See you all bright & early Sat morning at the BP. Can't wait.

Regards
Mr Turbo

The Tom Tom tells me its 1 1/2 hours and 128 km to Kurmond from here - so I'll see you at 9. I've only got a hand held UHF. I'll pm apsilon my mobile number.

So is this the list

whats the track like that yous are planned to go on? how many are going so far?

Sorry, didn't answer this last night. I have no idea really. I haven't done it before and I don't believe anyone else has either. It's rated easy so I'm expecting it to be mostly dirt roads and minor fire trail stuff. Perhaps some minor ruts and loose rocks. Nothing I expect to be a problem for even a stock Forester.

riteo im pretty sure ill be goin, ill let yous no by fridy but its a 80% chance i will, ill prob just go along the highway and work my way there, sounds like it will be a good trip :D

I've been searching for a trip report on this one given I haven't recced it beforehand and finally found one from Nov last year. Credit to "marc_mmg":

Hi Guys, just wanted to post an update on the Hunter Range track. I took my family up this track yesterday in our NM Pajero, and it's a bloody long run.
We went from the Windsor end, turned in at the Putty turn off (about 90 clicks from Windsor up the Putty Rd) The track condition varied from 60-70 km/hr dirt track (fire roads in the Park) to 5 km/hr terrain that almost shook the old girl apart! Because of the rougher terrain the total trip took 10 hours (from Kellyville - full track - back to Kellyville) and this only included stopping for 20 minutes for morning tea ( to fuel up the rug rats) and then about 30 minutes break for lunch at the old Drovers huts. This run is listed in the 4wd treks Close to Sydney book for anyone wanting to take it on. It is by no means a difficult track (in fact a rental Commodore could do 90% of it - rentals make the best off roaders!) The lat/long points are good (although my VDO MS5000 was showing slightly different readings than listed but close enough to know we were still ok) but my one warning is to stick to exactly what they say. There are a lot of new tracks now as there is a lot of logging going on in there, and I made the mistake of taking the right fork at a Y junction as it looked more used and a better track - opps - it took us deep into the scrub to a dead end where there was a heap of logging equipment parked up. 14 kms the wrong way at about 14 kms/hr, so that added some time to the trip!
The old drovers sheds are a good spot to have lunch etc (and they have just recently put a beaut new long drop in there for the etc!) The tracks are in overall good condition, but as you head away from the drovers sheds (heading Northish) you go onto sections of private property and thats were the track becomes rough as guts! As I said, not challenging but rough enough to bring the pace back to walking! We only passed one other vehicle all day heading in the opposite direction - sorry about the dust!
Overall a good run, but it is long and time consuming if you want to preserve your suspension and tyres by going at a slower pace (a lot of rocks abaout the size of tennis balls and bigger which are great at shredding Pirellis!)

So sounds like it really will be easy but could be a long day, especially for those already travelling a fair way to the start. I'll make sure I bring the compressor for this one so I can drop the tyre pressures for a bit more comfort.
