Anyone up for a day trip on the weekend of the 15th/16th? I just bought a new book - "4WD Treks Close to Sydney" and they're mostly ones I haven't done which is good. Most are also listed as being suitable for softroaders so even stock Forresters should eat them up. There's a couple listed as not recommended for those wanting something a bit more challenging. All but 2 are north or west. One down south will have to wait for the snow to clear and the other we've done before.

If I get an idea of numbers and how challenging a trip we want I'll post up a couple of options if there's interest.

Sounds good mate & that w-end I also have free with nothing planned. :)

Ah damn it. My 18th Birthday is on the Friday (14th), but I'm in the middle of my Trial HSC exams that weekend.

I'll have to wait until after November if I want to go on a trip .

Driver training for the Subie Club that weekend.

Yeah unfortunately we're never going to please everyone. I'm busy through to mid Sep other than that weekend otherwise I'd look at moving it. Don't worry, there'll be several more.

I'm interested and since it's my birthday I should be able to do what I want!
Where were you thinking of going?

I'll post up some options by end of Thurs at the latest. If anyone has a preference for north or west let me know. Alternatively if anyone has ideas for a track tothe south feel free to post them up.

I'm not fussy, north, south, east or west, it doesn't worry me. :)
As any trip offroad is a good trip. :raz:

you'll be hard pressed offroading in the East Damo unless you've got a boat  i'd love to come but as i've pulled out on the last 3 i'll play on this one to the end:sad:

Damo has a snorkel and just sees the ocean as one big water crossing to NZ LOL.

OK, options:

1. Watagans. Rated easy and suitable for softroaders. Starts 84km from Sydney and track itself is ~87km

2. Hunter Range. This takes in Sheep Skin Hut that Damo was looking at for another trip. Rated easy and suitable for softroaders. Starts 137km from Sydney and track is ~103km

3. Newnes. Some/all of you have probably already been here but I haven't which is why I'm including it. Rated easy and suitable for softroaders. Starts 150km from Sydney and track is ~54km

4. Baal Bone Gap. Rated moderate and not recommended for softroaders. Starts 145km from Sydney and track is only ~32km.

5. Sunny Corner. Rated moderate and not recommended for softroaders. Starts 170km from Sydney and track is ~45km. This and the previous could potentially be done over a weekend, one each day.

They're the closest ones to Sydney barring things we've done like Stockton and Yengo.

What do we think?

A tentative yes from me for a trip on 15th or 16th.

Not sure of the exact route that the book suggests but Newnes Plateau and Baal Bone Gap can probably be done as combo, which would make the ~150km tarmac drive out there more worthwhile. Regarding the difficulty of Baal Bone (suitablility for soft roaders, etc), it looks reasonable from this report - https://forums.overlander.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=784348. I would give it a go in the Forester...but then I did this on a previous trip so maybe I'm not the best judge of these things

These guide books usually err on the cautious side (probably due to possible liability claims) so I think they'd be fine but it's up to the indvidual to decide what they're willing to attempt. Looks easy enough on that trip report.Newnes, Baal Bone Gap and Sunny Corner are all fairly close to each other so any combination should be possible. My only concern is fuel range. I know with combined hwy and offroad in my Forester I was very lucky to see 400km from a tank.Maybe all 3 would be an ideal weekend trip? We were planning a camp at Newnes anyway so maybe it'd be best to look at one of the other options and plan a weekend to tackle the other 3 as a combined trek?

I've always wanted to visit NZ too. :)
From what I hear, NZ is a little closer to us now (30cm / 12in), so the water crossing's not as long as it used to be. :rotfl:
This is due to an earthquake they had a few weeks ago.

But getting back to the subject, that sounds like a great idea.
I wouldn't mind exploring option 2:Hunter Range & Sheep Skin Hut.

But I'm happy with whatever is trip is chosen.

Yeah I heard that. Apparently the west coast moved up to 30cm but the east coast only moved up to 12cm so not only is it now closer but it's also bigger. How awesome is the power of nature!?

OK, so unless there's any objections I think we'll go for the Hunter Range trek.

Any preference as to day? I have a slight preference for Sat but can do either.

Sounds great.

I too would prefer Sat, but I'm happy for either day. What ever the majority favours, is fine by me. :)

I think I need to get Ruby Scoo sorted with some lift and come up for a long weekend expedition!!!

So it is intended to be a one dayer rather than an overnighter it would seem. If a one dayer, then Saturday would suit me. But in truth, an overnighter would be great.

id like to go to wattagans or a beach trip up stockton, i live in newcastle, so anywhere not to far away would be fine for me

I'm in Wollongong so the Hunter is a bit off a stretch but I'm still keen. Saturday would be slightly better but Sunday is Ok too. I have'nt done stockton or the Watagans so either is fine but I would like to do Stockton.
