How fast ...

I think they brought it back for a couple of hundred kilometres about 2 years ago, but I may be mistaken.

Yes there was a trial north of Alice - not sure what happened

When up the NT in 2017 in the fozzy we squeezed 132 kph out of it. Roof top tent and full of gear, definitely not a speed machine.

I was told a tale by a guy that goes up the cape regularly. Major corrugation on those roads. He says the first SG forester he saw on that road passed him doing at least 120 and disappeared out of sight.. He reckons it was basically floating over the corrugations, didn't look like it was having any trouble at all.
That was before 2010.
Now that I think about it.... It was probably Kevin on one of his trips :D

From Alice through to Kings Canyon we aired down to 20psi and sat on about 80kph on the gravel road, never expected corrugation so bad but we had some really wierd looks from all the bigger 4wds. A sense of adventure is always good.

I was impressed with my D697s aired down to 30 against some corrugations the other day. I thought it would be bumpier, but a bit of extra speed and it was pretty smooth. Whether that's due to the fact that I run at about 42-45 on the bitumen (as recommended by the Bridgestone guys that fitted them) or not I'm not sure. Certainly feel the hidden potholes on bitumen though!

I run my bfg ko2's on 34 when empty and bump them up to 40 when loaded, bit softer ride. If not quite sure of your tyre pressure read your tyres. If wearing in the middle, over inflated or if wearing on the shoulders usually means under inflation. I don't like hidden potholes either

So then wats makes goimg fast worse less stable? What mods most influence that? Lift? Roof rack? Mud tires?

Mine are very even on the wear at the moment, about 10/15000 kms in. They are a commercial truck tyre, if that makes any difference.

All of the above!
the roof rack would probably be the least affecting as that would mostly just slow you down, assuming no major weight on it.

The lift and tyres don't seem to worry stability or speed, it's just when you throw the rooftop on that you notice the drag.

So lift that makes more ground clearance so car is higher from ground doesnt affect high speed handling? I think it is, i mean its not just about going fast but going fast and feek confident in able to contr your car on that speed. And things like removed sway bars at least in rear doesnt help there is it?
Im not seeing myself going with it even up to 150 , like how high revs should be then?

Yes, correct the higher the vehicle the more unstable they can be especially without sway bars that's why I don't remove them.

i think there are cars that made for speed and subarus ...well maybe wrx can be made for this or some lowered thing , but with those gearboxes its kinds tupid to go faster because fuel usage will just go up very fast too.
korea have 1.3 turbo engine SUV's now that go faster 0-60 then those 3.0 engine on subaru and use less fuel , so yh i mean, and now almost everyone have good AWD traction control out there. its not anything special anyway and they doing better job in braking wheels then VDC does so ... can they keep up with china/korea ?

Our SG would be doing about 5200 rpm at 198 kmh. The SH (auto) about 4950 rpm. Hardly stressing these engines.

I’ve not had the legal chance to try anything in my subarus, from a guess I’d say the 3.0R would easily do 240or more, I’ve done 247 in my old Holden commodore SV6 and 256 in my old Honda Accord CL9 at a track in nsw.

cheers

I may have the chance to get hold of one of those in a Liberty. Just finding out if it's got a 6 speed or auto. If it's a 6speed and the price is right, then I've got an engine to put in the Forester, and a driveline to put in the SVX.
Might take a bit of work to do..

...... imagine you are driving on the Silver City Highway somewhere south of Tibooburra (this really is out the 'Back of Bourke'), and you come to that part of the road that doubles duty as an emergency runway a mile long (for Flying Doctor etc) - there is not a car (or plane) in sight, there is no wind to speak of - a bit like this:

I only got up to about 130kph that time - but was tempted. It was a bit too remote to risk something going wrong.
