ORS and SF.org are fantastic places for Subie owners to share technical info and destination/trip info, however, I only post when I feel the absolute need to or if I have done a trip that I feel will make other ORSers proud to be Subie owners.....
As for bias, I wouldn't call it bias but there is a natural tendency for people to wait a few years until their shiny new investment has lost some of its novelty before they go hard modding it and getting it scratched by squeezing past some shrubbery.
It's true that there are far less posts on modding SHs but there absolutely should be. As some of you would've read, my shortlist for my next vehicle is SH XT (manual), SH S-Edition (auto), Pajero, Pajero sport, Disco 4 or Prado (all depends on if we have child #2 or not). 2 kids will need an upgrade. If we stick with 1 then an offroad S-Edition is my fantasy....
However, I haven't been able to find anything on SH S-Editions with 2 inch lifts, nor lifted SH XTs. It seems these haven't hit the bargain basement enough yet.
I do feel that the CVT models need to prove themselves for a few more years.....they are just different and that takes a while to get into people's psychology (including me). I would like to like the CVT XT but they still scare me.
My SF is everything I ever wanted it to be, but it's goddamn 20 years old. The cabin feels like a teenagers first car and the exterior is highly unflattering with dings and that goddamn clear coat flaking off everywhere....it just looks a bit too povo.
I'd love to have something newer, but as I said, waiting to see if we have a second kid in the next year before I spend cash on a full size 4x4.....if not, there is every chance I'll do an offroad/tourer build on an S-Edition.
Incidentally, the missus's Golf recently leaked coolant all over the carpet from the heater core.....I've had to bypass it so no heater this winter. It regularly gets stuck in 2nd gear (just imagine what its like to drive with 1 gear!). The engine has a noise that no mechanic can fix so it's now officially up for sale.....
I have just bought her a Land Rover Freelander 2 TD4 SE with 68k on the clock and all the relevant recalls done. It's a beautiful car. 210mm clearance, Terrain response control and and interior that makes me feel like Prince Phillip. Some say it's more capable than a Forester but I don't think we'll be using it for that. Hence, my Forester is still our rough and ready off-roader.
