Trouble in the Northern Territory

Good to hear your on the way home. Take it easy. Dont push to hard.

Visiting family and will be home tomorrow! :woohoo:

Yes, did go though Balranald Peter. The Hay Plains are very "plain" aren't they; in fact much of the Stuart Highway is fairly boring.

The truckies hate going across that stretch of the Hwy Kevin, you either have a bad cross wind - a plague of grasshoppers - locusts or it is just plain bloody hot. In some places you even struggle to see a tree.

Is the Triton still making a racket up front?

I love that 'nothingness'!

So, one month after the breakdown I am finally home! I took the Triton straight to the local service centre where they are checking it over, including a strange rattling sound coming from the front of the engine.

Ugh, 1 month...

Well, good you are back! And the vehicle, too...

^ indeed - I wasn't sure I could travel 2,800 klm (1,740 miles) without further issues!

Hot-damn!! This thread got more epic than I thought it could!

I enjoyed being here up to a point but now can't wait to get out.

I was going to say something along the lines of “at least you got to see some amazing things in Alice Springs” - the Gahn arriving is a cool pic. The “slow tv” doco of the Gahn on sbs last summer was good too. An awesome piece of infrastructure!

^ Solo. Arrived Mildura. The front of the engine has started to sound like a metal bucket full of bolts & nuts; it's still running fine and cruising at 110 kph without any problems.

Not what you need to have on your return trip! More grey hairs or are the hairs starting to fall out at a rapid rate?

I hope the dealership sorts you out without your back pocket getting involved again!

Epic trip and some (future) good memories!

I was very glad to read that you were home safe. Did you kiss your driveway/check in at the local cop shop to say you were back (and stop the search party)??

Cheers

Bennie

No, I checked in at the bottle shop!

I had both, Peter. My aircon didn't get switched off all the way from Brisbane to Melbourne ...

@Tweaksta; Thanks for asking.

Not sure yet. They called me over to have a look & listen to the engine yesterday which had all the front gear removed e.g. fan, belts, timing cover etc. The engine sounded just fine at idle. They couldn't run it up to hot without the supporting gear installed of course. When removing the timing cover they did find it had been broken where the fan pulley is located and there were obvious signs that it had been rubbing against the back of the pulley. Now I'm certain they did not break it here so just like the broken radiator shroud "discovered" in the Alice Springs service centre I guess "Mr Nobody" did it! New parts were ordered and I should have the car back in a couple of days.

Nice. So has this experience swayed your opinions on Mitsubishi in any way? I still think I'll end up getting a Paj or Paj sport eventually. Is it a common fault or was it an isolated and random event? Sometimes I think that if one has made several hiccup-free trips to the outback, something has to eventually go wrong, not because your car is dodgy but because probability states it. Then you add the increased likelihood of incident due to harsh conditions and a bit of Murphy's law and there you have it.

No, not a common fault at all and the Triton has done very well indeed with about 140K+ klm with the majority of that distance being outback trips. The newer Tritons have a different engine now; it's a 2.4L diesel.

I got the car back yesterday - yet to give it a good run.
