The Red XS

I wasn't going to do a build thread as I didn't think I needed major modifications. But looking back all the minor tweaks over the years have built up. Actually, it has still been less then two years. So here we go...

When I got my Forrie it was the only SG series II that I could afford on my uni student budget and despite a few minor problems (lack of oil and radiator fluid) it was still so much nicer than any of the series I's that I test drove. This was my first car and has still been my only car. I originally got it because I wanted a 4wd that was still nice to drive.

After reading through the forum my first mod was my DIY mark I bashplate which I installed before doing any offroading.

Did a few surf trips and a few trips with forum members. Meeting a lot of great people on here, some of them with an insane amount of very helpful knowledge. The forester proved to be a very capable car off road even in its pretty much stock form. I wasn't going to do any mods as I didn't think I needed them, how ever my bash plate was slowly turning into a bashed plate as I was doing a fair bit of scraping.

So then came the lift. Opted for 1" strut top spacers, mostly because they were cheap, but also because i wanted to keep the half decent articulation of the standard springs. If anything, I'd want softer suspension, as I travel light, with further travel, but there don't seem to be any cheap options for that.

Car looks way better with the lift in! Proportions really suited the car, this is how Subaru should have sold them as stock. At least the newer models come with decent ground clearance.:)

Now, most the tracks I do are with minimal scraping, occasionally I wish I put a 2" lift in, but I haven't really "needed" it. Since was doing less scraping the DIY mark II bashplate came along.

Another DIY job was the easily removable window mounted CB ariel.

Car was doing and looking great. Got the Red XS up one of the tallest sand dunes in Australia first attempt, while Land Cruisers and Patrols were running out of power 1/8th of the way up. But the next thing to fix was the approach angles. I only saw the plastic bumpers limitations as a guideline, hence the scrapes and holes in it. A SubaXtreme bull bar came up for sale locally for a decent price and was in my colour! This was far too good an opportunity to miss.

To be continued...

Yeah, it's great value! But note that the flag probably isnt a legal size for SA's sand flag rules which will probably be brought in by other states. Should be pretty easy to put on a bigger flag though.

Changed the rocker cover gaskets. Job wasn't any where near as difficult as I thought it would be and took about half the time I expected. Some threads mentioned having to unbolt the engine to create enough room to get the rocker covers out. This was not the case for me, maybe other models are different.

I also fitted a pair of 'new' headlights today. The old ones would sand out ok and I tried some restore kits, but one decent Summer day in the West Aussie sun would turn them yellow again. Plus they were going yellow on the inside so would never look new. After a very long time of shopping around I was able to get matching as new ones from people who bought the wrong model. New ones are ridiculously expensive. From this I have learnt that there are at least three slightly different headlights for X/XS SG series II Foresters. And that there are a lot more people selling right headlights then left headlights.

Looks a decade younger. Now to get the car dirty over the weekend so I can clean it and make it look new again.

Looks really well loved, Red :).

Our SG had its insurance renewed last week. $14,190 agreed value ... :lildevil: .
A bit of fast talking at this point saves a lot of heated 'discussion' later if the worst should occur.

I actually had my Forester stolen earlier in the year. Was looking at all the upgrades I could make with my insurance money and was less then a day away from buying an SH before my Red XS turned up in thankfully good condition. No damage and didn't use enough fuel to have traveled very far. The way it was hidden and reversed parked made it looked like they were planning on using it as a get away vehicle in the future...

But insurance had no problem changing the locks over properly and were easy to deal with which cost them over $1000. Only thing they didn't replace was my stolen CB radio which I forgot to list on the policy. Must make sure EVERYTHING is on the policy.

Also when changing the rocker cover seals - sand had gotten into the left side, meaning the seals were doing an absolutely useless job and I had some careful cleaning to do.

Looks much better! I understand when you use the polishing kits you have to use some kind of wax finish to stop the yellowing.

Yeah, it was such a shock to hear it was stolen, sooo glad you got it back in one piece!!

Those new lights look so much better mate, very nice!!

Also extremely glad you did get it back !

I'm looking forward to fitting my new low range after struggling up the hills on the weekend. It never looks as steep in the videos, but I can assure you my foot is too the floor for most of it with the revs slowly dropping away...

But this will fix my issues.

Also the Forester has less flex then a Falcon

Nice pics !

You have a 1,19:1 LR on your 2,5XS, right ?

And the one on the pic is a 1,59 ? If so, you'll soon have a crawler !

Love the pics, your RedXS looks great in photos! :monkeydance:

Curious too what LR you're putting in, looks like a SF?

In that vid, did you notice when you braked the front wheels locked up & slid sideways? A very useful trick on steep tracks is to use the handbrake with the foot brake. Pull it on hard, keeping your thumb on the release button so you can regulate it & use the footbrake up to the point of locking up the front but not actually doing it. That way you stop but always maintain control of the steering :)

And the winner is Nachaluva! You know your low ranges well. I'll try your handbrake trick next time I'm on the tracks.

All Drive are still having production issues with their 1.61:1 low range. Albins wanted $1800+GST for their 1.58 low range, and there are a lot of other things that money could buy. I didn't feel up for making a 1.59 L series low range fit in. So I went with the SF low range. It looks near enough as new, while I imagine a L series low range would have some wear on it.

Won't quite be a crawler, but should give me a few more rpm on slow slopes like that as well as make it easier on the clutch on soft beaches.

SF Low Range
I can now drive slowly! By no means Landcruiser slow, but I would actually call this a low range. It's amazing being able to drive at a sensible speed over rocky terrain and it makes stop/starting in soft sand so much easier. I highly recommend this mod to anyone who offroads, especially if you are taking your gearbox out for anything such as clutch/thrust bearing/ect.

Tyres
215/65R16 Toyo Open Country HT's. Tred pattern is in-between a standard road tyre and an AT, which is exactly what I want for mostly sand with a bit of gravel. The extra sidewall gives a little more comfort over the corrugations and turns the Forester into an unstoppable beast in the sand :lildevil:

Spotlights
Just the cheap Ebay $60 ones. 7500 Ebay lumens are not as bright as 5000 quality lumens. The "aluminum" case is plastic, the "steel" bracket is plastic and the "toughened glass" lense is also plastic. But they still put out enough light for night driving and have to be the most light per dollar so I'm happy.

Vinyl Wrap
Probably not something 99% of people on here would bother with. However bush scratches have always annoyed me. So I spent $50 on PanelProtect. I am by no means a professional vinyl wrap fitter, so it looks a bit crappy with it on, but it does keep the paint in good condition and I can now drive anywhere...

Trip report coming next.

Where have you put this onto the car. Mind showing some pictures?

Vinyl wrap goes all down the sides of the car. Pretty much every panel except roof, bonnet and tailgate.

Start of the trip it looked pretty good.
IMG_5690_zpsx5r0ekln.jpg

Edit in this photo ^ I have a thin strip on the side of the tailgate, but nothing on the back.

But by the end of the trip it was starting to bubble over the panel creases, I think the reason is that I pulled the plastic too tight when I put it on.
IMGP6403_zpsatluipx2.jpg

It makes the car very slightly less shiny when it's on, but if you did a good job you could probably get it so people wouldn't know it was on. However there are a lot of hours in that or you could pay someone to fit it.

I started of this trip in Fitzgerald River National park along with a Suzuki DR650. These are two very different vehicles...
IMG_5690_zpsx5r0ekln.jpg

We started off by exploring the National Park, which is also where we spent the first night.

We then set off to Bremer Bay, which is the next Bay across from the one you are looking at.

This was my first chance to test out my new low range - a hill decent. The low range did very well
IMGP6239_zpszvqocb17.jpg

Since the theme of the trip was "Bikes don't like beaches" I then got to test the low range going back up the hill. Conclusion of this research is that I like SF low ranges!
IMGP6242_zpssu9gl8gq.jpg

The inland route to Bremer Bay had puddles.
IMG_5710_zpspllelcdn.jpg

Lunch stop as this journey was taking longer then expected.
IMG_5707_zpsiynwtcyj.jpg

Once at Bremer Bay it turned out the river mouth was not barred across as planned. It was passable .. if you don't mind salt water through your vehicle. So the bike went through the the Forester did a 40 minute trip around.

A nice view above Dillon Bay.
IMG_5724_zpsz7jhnhx9.jpg

Due to all the detours, we ended up camping here instead of arriving at the nicer camp in the dark.

Dillon Bay was a nice place.

Since the beach is at the bottom of a line of cliffs, all the beach exits are very long and steep. They sort of just keep on going and then have a gnarly bit at the end for good measure.

IMGP6255_zpsz7qhun7m.jpg

IMGP6256_zpscv9dlmyf.jpg

Further down the beach the bike broke down and it was an all day event to attempt to fix it and then find a ute to get it off the beach. We then spent the night in the caravan park eventually getting the bike going, before it went home early.

This left me to explore some more tracks by my self in Subaru territory.

There was mud...
IMGP6331_zpshako8o2r.jpg

...rocks...
IMGP6323_zpss4fqo0ll.jpg

... and sand.
IMGP6330_zpszeelhgvi.jpg

At the end of the track was the spectacular view of reef beach. It's difficult to get a scale of this place, but basically the beach is made up of sand dunes and the sand dunes further back are truely massive, many times taller then anything at Lancelin. There was a Landcruiser who had spent the night bogged on the beach and needed a recovery. Once they were gone I was the only one down there.

On the way back to a camp I got up close with one of those rare Western Australian Mountains.
IMGP6352_zpsyfou5qy9.jpg

From the top I found view Western Australia's other mountain, and then flatness in every other direction.

Another random track.

Top location for a final swim of the day.

And then camp at St Mary's inlet.

Bulbar's make great clothes lines.

Final day, I was about to head home and then I found what was clearly a track. It wouldn't be right not knowing what was down the end of it.

There were some great views along the cliffs.

Great trip, great car and great location! I hope others have got out over the Christmas break.
