Almost's '10 NA Offroader

Here is the remade thread!
Since I haven't gotten a build thread on here yet, just going to post some stuff over from subaruforester.org.

It is a model 2010 Forester XS, with pure N/A powah.

Planned mods:

Bars and Racks
Sump guard and Rear skid plate.
Side Steps/Rocksliders
UEL Headers(if I can find some...)
New axle back exhaust(new muffler or straight through)
New rims and A/T tires
Lights and Radio gear
King springs with the Primitive gear(spacers, PRSS etc)

More to come

This is as it stood when I got it, clean, with no mods! :tissue:

And now the bullbar is on!

Ok thanks for clearing that up.

Yeah i'm either going to do just a little filter on it, or if I can get a nice deal on one of the breather blocks they sell at 4x4 stores I might pick one of em up.

Lol had just got all oils replaced before I went on the trip at the mechanics, might just do it at home now to save some $...

It begins.

Currently in the process of relocating ECU, fits perfectly in the little tray in the top of the glove box.
Factory location.

New home.

Taadaa, all moved and working. ECU move complete, now if I drown the car the ECU will be nice and dry. While I have the Grey trim pieces off I may wrap them in 3M carbon fibre vinyl just to change it up a bit.

Just bolted it in with a bolt, crush washer and nylock nut on each side.

There is some foamy cloth stuff above it sealing and sound deadening the sound cavity, I had to remove it so I could pull the wires up and drill the holes properly. I reinstalled it using "professional grade" glue(I love glue sticks :P) since I couldn't find my hot glue gun.

Good work mate. Probably the simplest and best mod I've seen done on the forum.

Yeah fits perfectly, don't know why it wasn't up there in the first place, very quick mod. Probably the hardest part of the process was jimmying off the trim piece, which you have to kinda wiggle up and pull to pop the clips.
Next up is diff breathers. From what nacha has told me the front diff and gearbox go through the dipstick, which I have some pipe to fit too.

The rear diff is another story. I want it to be water tight and strong so I'm not just going to clamp a hose onto the breather that's already there. By the looks of it nacha has threaded the hole and put a fitting it, have you done rear diff breathers on yours?

Yeah apparently the little pipe can come out and it's a bit dodgey get a seal on it. But hey, I will give it a try!

Nice job on the ecu! :monkeydance:

Yep, both Venom and myself have a brass fitting tapped into the rear diff cover. Pretty easy to do. I think its a 1/4" barbed BSP fitting, you can get a cheap 1/4" BSP tap from eBay for ~$10. Clamp a hose to the fitting and run it up to the wheel arch with a mini fuel filter on the end (keeps out fumes). Only tricky bit is running the hose through the crossmember. Next time I might find a 2 piece right angle fitting to run under the xmember not through it

thanks for that. I ordered that 2 port diff breather block for the engine bay, so I will probably chase the fuel lines into the engine bay. Then I will route both the GB and rear diff to that, and make a shroud around it to protect from any splash.

Throttle Happy Tune. Matt is an awesome guy.
It's like driving a different car, pulls like a freight train even up hills.
I can use a gear higher in basically any situation. Fuel economy is better too. It launches so well now, no more issues at low rpm.
Get it now.

Now to finally take on Mt pinnibar.
After I get my snorkel on.

Great stuff AU. I contacted him a while ago about getting my tractor tuned but never followed thru... definitely on the cards for the future though ;)

Your car is coming along great. How's everything after the lift kit install?

Hahahahahahahaha Diesel power is the best!
Yeah everything after lift install is great, definitely less body roll and handles kerbs a lot better :) After the alignment everything was all good.
Though the vehicle is on the table at the moment.
I'm considering selling it and moving to a more offroad vehicle, then getting an older turbo foz for the road(don't worry I would still offroad it :) )
it's just the terrain I'm wanting to encounter, the forester isn't cutting the mustard. I may give the high country one last go to see if it changes my mind now I have the tune.

What gearbox do you have? Just the standard 1.19 DR right? You could always look into a better low range, DCCD centre and possibly even an ARB air locker for an R180 out back, it's a combination that should work in theory but nobody's actually tried...

Yeah the standard dual range. I have been looking into DCCD and a lower low range, but I just think that for the cost it's just not going to be worth it, and that money would be worth a lot more spent on a proper 4wd. but yeah if I can't get this thing sold(not too many people in the market for for it) then I will just put the modding funds allocation into overdrive and go to town on the thing.

Snorkel install has already been indefinitely put on hold as it's just a bit of a hassle at the moment.

A standard Foz does pretty good Offroad for what it is (essentially an out of the box SUV - it definitely gives the other brands a run for their money) but once you want to start hitting the harder terrain you do have to do some modification...

The most frustrating thing I think is the fact that there is so little available for modifying Subarus which drives the price up - as an example a rear bar for a Forester with Jerry Can holder and Spare Wheel Carrier can set you back at least $3,500 where as the same thing for a Nissan Patrol (or similar) would probably be half the cost. That and there are many more rear bars out there to suit a Patrol then there are rear bars for Subarus. Availability is a big thing...

Every time you do something to improve the Subaru, you find something else to be modified to give you that little bit more - it just seems to be endless (well for me at the moment :P)

BUT the look on the 'real 4WDers' faces as you fly-by on the sand or the look of utter shock on their faces as you climb up a steep rutted section is all worth it I reckon! :)

We drove past one the other weekend with our Subaru Club, he was sitting perched on his bullbar on top of a hill watching us all climb up and remarked 'I've never seen so many Subarus doing this sort of thing before!' Definitely worth it! :D

Well, the mods never end..... Decided it was finally time to stiffen the ride up, so in comes A front strut support(not pictured), stiffer whiteline front and rear swaybars, perrin endlinks, rear swaybar supports, and a dream of some DIY disconnects :)
DSC_0363.JPG

Seems now I am nearing endgame without spending some more $$$$ Oh how much do I want a turbo engine with a 6spd DCCD with super low range. Been so busy at the moment with exams and the weather has been so miserable, haven't been able to take the subie offroading for a while. Hopefully when I'm down at the snow in the season I can give these A/T's a work out!

After the car spent the season down at the snowfields, it's finally back for some much needed love!!
Started with using the orbital polisher with a cut polish to remove all the bush scratches, now the paint is like a mirror, and the clearcoat a bit thinner haha!

Then proceded to add another sticker to the collection!

And got prepped for installing some bracing. Up for today was the SPT front brace, and the whiteline rear swaybar! Whiteline front bar and perrin endlinks are waiting until I get some bolts for it.

"Liberal" application of lube :D

And in she is!
DSC_0446.JPG

Couldn't get the rear sway braces in as the lower lateral bolts were stuck in there real good! Soaked em in wd40 overnight but they just didn't budge. Thinking i'm gonna have to hit them with a bigger breaker bar or borrow a rattle gun.
