Will's H6 Outback

Since I have been doing a few more things to the outback I thought I'd start a journal.

The car started off as a high kms car that I managed to pick up cheap because it had head gasket issues. The car was then converted to dual range manual and had the heads rebuilt.

As it sits today it has:

2'' Crossbread body lift
Raised springs
SubaXtreme front bar
SubaXtreme sump guard
215-70-16 BFG A/T's
Dual batteries
2 way
110db stereo
Roof top tent

And what I have been working on this weekend...

A new roof rack system.

As the plastic ends on my standard roof bars where not quite up to the job of holding the tent I decided to buy some pro rack roof tracks. The tracks are bolted in place in the standard bolt positions, riveted to the roof and sealed/glued with polyurethane.

The new rails will be used to support this!
Tradies rack that had been cut down to suby size. Hopefully got onto welding it next weekend. Will be designed to carry windsurfing gear/surfboards and rooftop tent.

Yep that is one nice looking Outback. You've set it up fantastically too.

Thanks guys. Today I finished my roof rack, was too dark to take pics by the time I finished. Just needs to be stripped and powder coated.

I also payed ARB a visit today to size up some snorkels. As it turns out the latest hilux is almost an exact fit for the gen 3 shape. After telling the bloke I'd think about the $430 price tag I then bought one of ebay for $108 delivered. A further $20 bux for some 3'' flexible hose. So for $128 I should have myself a snorkel.

Pics when I get some time :)

Sounds like you got a fantastic deal there with the snorkel mate.

Are you fitting it yourself ?
If so, the first hole you cut is the hardest :iconwink:

Looking forward to seeing the pics :)

Regards
Mr Turbo

Loving the roof rack system Will, nice to see photos of the rack up there too.

Actually has an SF forester box in it so same as yours. Will eventually have the same box rebuilt with a DCCD (have sitting around) front torsen lsd and L low range :)

If you've got sf low range behind a H6 I reckon you'll find it's low enough. I've got no intention of going back to 1.59 low range.

This is one of the best looking outbacks getting around I reckon! Kudos to you Will!!

Possibly the holy grail of subaru gearboxes, apart from mine - my problem is that's very limited in parts availability...

Keep up the good work!

Cheers

Bennie

Also forgot top mention a lower 5th. As the H6 sucks juice sitting on 2800rpm @100kmh.

Few updates, will have pics when I'm not so run down from work, CBF atm.

Roof rack does an awesome job at holding the tent and windsurfing gear, with less effect on fuel consump and handling than I thought.

Received snorkel and will attack fitting that some time soon, should look like a beast. Also smashed the shi! out of my SubaXtreme bash plate, as everyone always says the cast aluminum just isn't up to it. On the plus side on the accent it happened on I had a hilux driver saying he wanted a suby as his next car as mine smashed that climb he had just taken 2 shots up, massively lifted hilux with muddies :)

@Dulagarl, more want the low range for descents rather than lack of power (have not yet had any lack off road) you have an old L series or scorpion set you want to sell?

In my experience/opinion AWD Subarus are pretty bad at engine braking descents but not due to lack of low range but because the center diff allows the front wheels to run away whenever the back wheels loose sufficient traction which happens very easily especially with an open rear diff.

EDIT: I guess if you are installing a DCCD this will be less of an issue (assuming they work in reverse under engine braking)

Can understand wanting it for descents, but I really don't miss mine. I find the 1.44 fine.

I did have a scorpion set, but it was screwed. had to be thrown out.

You could get one from all drive subaroo. They will also be able to get a longer 5th gear for you. A few people on this forum have used em, including Kevin I think. No bad reports at all.

Thanks dulagarl but a bit out of my budget. Have a 5th ratio out of a liberty that will correct the issue.
