Offroad Subaru Video

He wants to make a professional production which could be put onto DVD & watched on modern HD big screen TVs so 1080p would be needed. Lower res is fine for a computer screen but would be horrible on a TV

Yeah I got that but my point (which thinking about it was not at all clear in my last post :rotfl:) was that if you are taking awesome footage in 720p then the lower quality might tolerable if otherwise one would not be seeing the awesome subaru action.

Also I watch movies in 720p on a 42" TV all the time and the slightly lower quality really doesnt bother me, but thats just me.

Hit me up if you need help with the sound production, we can do do it in my studio shouldn't take long video lay and sound folly is my specialty . Can't go to fancy though 2.1's fine can't do 7.1 anymore sold most of that gear (most work come's from bands, and albums don't sound very good in surround sound)

I agree. There's so much more to video quality than just whether it was recorded at 720p or 1080p resolution. Sharpening, levels, saturation, codec, lens quality, focus, camera movements, etc. I've seen both gold and crap at both resolutions.

If I only had a 720p camera I would at least do a test recording and see if it was going to be up to snuff.

I'm not opposed to taking a look at 720p stuff, but it would have to be brief snippets methinks. I was cutting some stuff together the other day and there was an awesome sequence where my car was hopping along with a wheel lifted, but it was out of focus. With a bit of sharpening and only using probably 1.5 seconds of the clip it still blends in fairly well with the other footage.

Well here's a 720p clip from fairly recently of what my camera can do trackside. Whacked it together quickly to post here.
The only time it was me behind the camera was in the first video, the first clip recording the Pathfinder. The rest was recorded by my mate who normally takes photos (and darn good ones at that) but never records anything haha. I always record and don't take as many pics. So in turn we have two different recording styles haha.

Overcast day, annoyingly windy. Windows Movie Maker saved it in 1080p but its still 720p!

Looked fairly reasonable but I was only viewing on a small screen :) The sun played havoc a bit there though.
I thought the tyres looked like farly reasonable tyres for sand, less good for mud but you cant have a tyre for everything.

The sand plume from the single front wheel spin suggests that you had not engaged the lever for 4x4 low range!

[my experience: 400K km '84 Touring Wagon]

Tyres are a street tread BFG's haha.

Strong sun reflections and darkness are this cameras weakpoints (and the lack of wind noise cancellation). Its a Lumix DMC FT3 toughcam which has been all over Aus with me. Only 12MP but it has a good lens, generally good sound picking and best lf all, it can go underwater n through mud and live to tell the tale! Tried and tested hehe :)

Hey Pig, it think it was engaged! First run i trundled up in 1st low going steady then failed. Second i tried more speed and was in second but its no speed demon so im sure i went back to first low range for the last and final run, i gave it the absolute berries, engine screaming and alas that failed me too.. Cant hear the engine cos of that blasted wind!

Thats what I have although mine seems to be pretty good in the sun which is interesting. Will agree about the wind noise though. For a tough cam it takes damn good stills though

Hm, not sure if the Windows editor or youtube does strange things when the clip is edited and/or uploaded. Here's the same camera, 720p, completley unedited. Taken in the outback last year. That orange dual cab i had in this clip was what replaced my old MY wagon too :O

Clear sunny day.

So i guess 720p must be kept to a bare minimum.. i wonder if theres a 1080p toughcam around!

My niece just got a water/dust/shock proof camera, takes pretty good stills & I'm sure its 1080p. I think Olympus but not sure...

i know its been a while but let's see where Matt's at.

I did the White Rim in Moab in my legacy and with another Subaru this spring and I've finally got some clips on youtube.
I don't recall camera settings if they'd be high enough deff for your purposes, but check them and if you want raw footage we could work out getting clips of my car to you.

here's just a quick little nothing, but it'll get you to my page at least.

Nice clip !

How do you fix the camera to the car ? I can see the hood move but the scenery is very still...

thanks!
It's a CB antenna's magnet mount. I removed the antenna, then put a nut and bolt through the base and the thread pitch is identical to a tripod's thus a camera screws right onto it. I have a stopper nut and washer which i tighten back up to the camera...

Its also YouTube's stabiliziation feature which makes the images kind of fluid-like.

Nice antenna mount ! I didn't know that the youtube stabilization feature does such a good job, I'll have to try this as well.

That stablisation has done a great job! Reminds me of the effect glidecams have on videos shot on SLR's!

It would appear that youtube has increased the quality of its stabilisation a huge amount recently. It used to be ok but not that great.
