Nachaluva's Foz

Two years ago I got a heartbreaking call my brother in law had suddenly died from Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS). He was a strong, healthy, fit man. They found him slumped over the table at work...apparently he was dead before he even hit the table, so at least he didn’t suffer at all.

My sister offered me his car, so I bought it. It was their 3rd Subie but my 1st.

I soon got tired of the poor lights so set out on my 1st mod...a headlight wiring upgrade & upgraded H4 bulbs. I soon ran into problems which is how I came upon AuSubaru while researching the wiring.

After much work & lots of help, esp from Gannon, my 1st mod was finished:
Headlights Wiring Upgrade - ORS

My 1st trip offroad was soon after to picturesque & historic Walhalla:

I discovered my suspension was completely shot, springs sagging & strut bouncing. With help from the forum I decided on raised King springs & new KYB struts. Very happy with the much improved handling & increased clearance, but I wish so much I had got the gen2 rear struts (SG)

I added Whiteline KCA414 Camber bolts which gave me neg camber on the rear but the best I could get the front was neutral.

A SubaXtreme sumpguard was next. I guess it did its job of protecting the sump but I found it very brittle & was soon falling apart

A Crossbred guard soon replaced it!

Some creature comforts next...

Dash mat to reduce glare of the vinyl dash. Sheepskin seat covers. It feels great, its cool in summer & warm in winter, plus adds a little to the height of the seat so now I feel higher lol ;)

I got tired of the skinny little 11mm OEM rear swaybar, so fitted a 20mm one from a GC8 WRX:

Also flipped the rear lateral arms over so the end links connect on top not under the arms, lifting them by 2”. Now the endlinks reach lol

Then I finally pulled out my finger & did my snorkel:

Installation thread here:
DIY Snorkel Installation

It has a nice throaty growl now under full throttle over ~3500rpm & noticeably more power across the whole range [FONT=&quot]

Now that you've installed your snorkel I'd suggest (if you haven't already done so) that you reset your ECU aswell :iconwink:

Regards
Mr Turbo

I'll be keen to see if your MAP sensor complains about the snorkel!

Looks like you've been really busy mate! Keep up the good efforts ;)

Cheers

Bennie

Thanks guys

I'll be keen to see if your MAP sensor complains about the snorkel!

I instantly got more power! :lildevil: I'm guessing a less restrictive intake...

When you fitting the bullbar?

Oh crikey! Thats a big one cos I have to make up custom mounts with an winch/recovery bar behind the bullbar. I'll have a receiver integated into that & slide a snatch strap or custom winch mount into the receiver through a cutout in the bar. I just have to get my head around the details first though lol

With river crossings on my mind, I sealed up the rear vents plus some annoying little drain plugs:

Still more to be done in the cabin...

Rear swaybar end link "quick disconnects" I did a while ago (before the body lift kit):

Only simple tools needed, 3/8"x2" clevis pins with 4mm R clips & 3/8" washers:

Articulation:

Only takes a few mins to disconnect the RSB, cable tie it up out of the way, then hit the tracks with the rear suspension freed up

I can see disc brakes at the rear, good swap too !

Not all...here in Europe, the non-turbo models have drums...(SF & SG)

All foresters have rear disk breaks..... I was thinking of upgrading my rear disks to 2pot and fronts to 4pot.

Nope they don't in Australia. The SG X had rear drums while the XS had non vented rear discs. Nothing wrong with drums tho..

A NachaLuva, here is your banner. If you want it up on the board just copy it to the Banner Comp section for Mr. T to add..

I have drums on my 99, think the facelift sf may have had rear discs in Europe.

I have thought a few times about upgrading to discs, but can't see that much benefit for how I drive the car.

I'm 100% sure all Australia delivered foresters had disk brakes in the rear.
Nachaluva's base model 97 SF which was the very first released here had disks.
Yes the base model SG foresters have disks.
I am very surprised the Europe models didn't as they are very similar to Aus spec models.

My SF has drums and disks in the rear (factory factory( but the drums are for handbrake only.

Yep, mine is the base model...no ABS, airbags or even immobiliser.

It has rear discs with handbrake drums inside the disc :iconwink:

^ etc

According to the specifications in the original brochures, all models of all year Foresters have four wheel disc brakes, in Oz at least.

The handbrake works on a drum brake system that is integral with the centre hub of the rear discs, as NL has already mentioned. I think that this is also used by the hill holder function.

I think your right with the hill hold, my brake light turns off when hill hold is on. I did my rear brake shoes not too long ago and adjusted them just right, car will hold on a ridiculously steep hill now .

Mine's the same as Nachaluva's (think mines a few months older haha) and yea, no immobilizer, no abs , no airbags, does have cruise control which actualy works the best of any i've had in a car. best of all no annoying electronic throttle!

The hill holder works on the hydraulic brake system, but only half of it because the brakes have a "X" circuit and the front left and rear right are on one circuit and the front right and rear left on another for safety reasons.

Yeah I didnt think that hill holder worked on the handbrake because I have had a useless handbrake before and the hill holder has still worked.
