G'day guys, I have a MY04 foz and I live in Aurukun in far north Queensland. All of my driving is on dirt, and I'd like to be able to get around during the wet season. I'm looking for something with excellent puncture resistance and aggressive tread. Aaaaaaaannnnnddd go!

For really serious tyres I've been admiring Mickey Thompson Baja...they look great! Dunno bout puncture resistance though.

Not much of a range for 15" & might be a struggle to fit with 16". I think your OEM tyres are 215/65/16?

The Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ 5-rib has a 30/9.50R15LT (OD 744mm) & a LT225/75R16 (OD 747).
I dont really understand this style code though, other than its a 30" tyre.

The Mickey Thompson Baja STZ looks great, but again the smallest tyre is P235/70R16 (OD 737)

The Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ looks wicked & has a 31/10.50R15LT (OD 782) but the smallest 16" is LT265/75R16 (32/10.5R16LT) (OD 813)

Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S have good puncture resistance & a factory puncture warranty but maybe arent "serious" enough for your needs. Other than that the new Cooper Discoverer AT3 or BFG A/T or BFG M/T may be your best choice.

But those Mickey Ts.....:twisted::lildevil:

Lift kit makes no difference - are you running genuine struts or after-market e.g. KYB?

225/70/R16 give about 2mm clearance to the rear spring perch and ing rub a manageable amount. With some molesting of the well in the boot the spare almost fits too.

If you were to do a strut bottom lift, run coilovers or fit ground control spring kits to your existing struts and grind the spring perches off you could go larger.

I think you're dreaming on the Mickey T's...... no way they'll fit without serious guard cutting and strut works...

Haha yeah I know but dreaming is free

I reckon his best bet is either the new Cooper Discoverer AT3 or BFG A/T or BFG M/T . Not cheap though...

Scatter, you can use Tire Size Calculator to calculate tyre ODs. Put in the sizes you want & it shows heaps of info. Just dont forget to put in the code at the bottom or you'll have to start all over again. Use stilsons 225/70/16 as a guide for your maximum size (without mods).

So 225/70/16 has an OD of 721.36 mm & the smallest M.T. Baja I could find was P235/70R16 (OD 737), about 15mm too big... :(

Very very helpful guys thanks. The BFGs look great but the price is a bit of a heart stopper. I'm thinking I might just go the yoko at/s and stick close to my mate's 80 series. They seem very well reviewed. What would I consider a good price? Anyone know of any deals? Thanks again for all your help, it's been a while since I've visited here but it's a great community.

Ok, got a set of the 215/70/r16 yokos. I'm getting them shipped up and will have them fitted up there. I'll
Let you know how they go.

I had the BFG AT 215 70 16, they were great but noisy at 60 km/h. I've changed for the General AT, and because of the pattern I thought they would not be "as" all-terrain...but I was wrong ! IMO, they are better everywhere :)

If you want a tyre that can take a beating BFG AT is probably the best you can get. They seem to be the only tyre that is a light truck tyre in sizes that fit a subaru. all other tyres are just standard tyres. That said i have yoko ATS tyres and they perform fine.

Stick with BFG. Hands down best puncture resistant tire you will find in a small enough size to fit a forester! The AT's or the MT's (km2's) the km2'a are the best tire I have ever had, I have them on my landcruiser and I will never use another mud tire.

Don't get the knock off tires, you will regret it in the long run.

in mud they seem to just fill up with mud an slide around, not idea for mud traction

But great fun lol

I've found they perform pretty well, in a direct comparison with identical SF Foresters on an uber slippery clay track (Gentle Annie), they outperformed Coopers. Of course there's no comparison for onroad performance, AFAIK, Geo's are the only A/T with a silica compound
