That cancels the advantage of using an active AWD, though. If you have good tyres, you still have good grip but having a Subaru means you have dynamic traction up to whatever speed you can get.
If he's running FWD, then me must have been using the FWD fuse to toggle it. Wen it's on, a mechanism bypasses certain circuiry and pushes the wet clutch pack away from each other. It's not good in the long run as the individual clutches in the pack are designed to remain at a certain pressure and friction against each other and the ATF fluid. When they are apart for too long, the wet clutch materials weaken and when in full contact again when the FWD fuse is removed, oftentimes, they disintegrate, leading to a more expensive repair or a total replacement of the transmission. That's why the manual indicates the use of the FWD mode when using the doughnut spare and when towing extra heavy loads only. The mode is not designed to be used for a long time.
The replacement can be a bit tricky but if one has good access and clearance, the repair is a bit easier than replacing the clutch for a manual gearbox.
The solenoid, depending on your model, can be bought from the dealer at a decent price or at partsouq.com. I've learned partsouq.com from @El_Freddo and was really impressed when I used their service. I just bought an A/F sensor for the GG9 at half the price and it was delivered to our house IN 5 DAYS even with COVID pestering the nations! Cheers.
