South Coast of NSW-Tathra Trip.

Gidday Silver

Judging just from the shape of that little bird, it could just possibly be a Sacred Kingfisher. I got some shots of one in our backyard here. I had never seen one before, and they aren't supposed to be down here.

I think you might be more on the money that I was Tweaksta :iconwink:

After having another look, I'm tending to think it's of the Butcherbird Family.
I say this because of the longer legs on it.

I've been pretty busy fishing, doing nothing, fishing, having a few beers, fishing....just stuff like that but here is a bit of an update and some more pics.
the weather has been a bit variable but is getting warmer but still windy and the other day, for a bit of variation some hail. I asked the manager of the park how often it hailed down here and he said never...so an hour or two later it hailed again.

I had got my car under cover and gave the Minn Kota a bit of pretection..

The RV3 Oztent has been great but when it hails it collects on the roof and quickly accumulates water so you need to be inside it and keep the load off or it could be trouble.
I had a couple of mates down from South West Rocks and also from Newstead in Vic and we had a great time.
Here are a collection of fishy shots and they ARE all different fish with none under 60cms.

When my mate and i were having a go for Bream or possibly an EP i got this...

018.jpg

You can see the lure in the pic. A size 1 fine hook with an 80mm Squidgey Blood Worm wriggler. The fish was about 5-6kgs and not bad on the BBQ.

A few other pics of the area etc.

Got the above fish near the big log about 8mtrs from the rocks.

This local came out the bush when i was watering the horse. Made me jump which was not really good timing:ebiggrin:

A future Socceroo??

I think this is the same one that likes soccer. They come around and mow the lawn for me.

I've still got about 3 weeks or so to go and am still searching for the GIANT flathead.

Thanks for updating & adding some more pics :) they're fantastic :raz:

Pity about the hail storm, but great that you, your car & the Minn Kota all made it through unscathed :) Good quick thinking with the esky too silver :iconwink:
For what would we do without the mighty esky :p

Nice fish aswell mate. There definitely some good feeds with that lot :raspberry:

Stuff like the hail is all part of the fun of camping i guess...although i was a bit worried about a $1000 worth of tent getting shredded.
Incredible what the Kangas can stuff in their pouch really...the little ones have got it pretty easy and i always have a smile on my face when the mums are chewing on the grass and the little head is out of the pouch doing the same .
Just for the record.....i do return probably 65% of the fish i catch back. Sometimes i keep the 60s and sometimes the smaller ones.
The other day i kept none. Must be me getting older or something but i have a soft spot for flatties and really enjoy letting them go. If you are gentle with them and put one hand under their belly and one under their head they usually will be pretty calm. One i got today wouldn't swim off!! It just stayed in my hands and i had to give it a hurry up.
This coming week looks good for fishing and i will put the boat in tomorrow and fish the runout tide. Full moon is on the way :raz:

"I've still got about 3 weeks or so to go and am still searching for the GIANT flathead."

Good luck with the search! thanks for the update & pics

I HAVE to tell this fishing story:poke:!!
In the above pics is a picture of a Mulloway (using the proper name that we have to use these sensitive days) that i got a while back when my mates were down from the North Coast.....anyway......yesterday i went for a fish and a bloke was stuffing around at the ramp so i figured i would change my lure and have another go for a Bream or an EP and so i put a little lure on......the exact same one as in the pic with an identical jig head but this time on my new rod and reel.
Well you can probably guess what happened or i would not be telling this story.
3rd cast of the day.....same thing....tiny little hit...bang....off and running...this time i was aware of what was going on so used the Mighty Minn Kota to take me out as far as i could get from the rock wall and about 10-12mins later...this..

037.jpg

This one was 96cms. I didn't measure the other one.

039.jpg

EXACTLY the same lure,100mtrs from where i caught the other one, same tiny little bite...bloody uncanny if you ask me.
On the NSW Dept. Primary Industry website there is a page with estimated weights of fish by length. This was around 9.2kgs (20lbs) give or take a bit.
I was using 10lb (4.5kg) braid, 10lb leader with my new 3-5lb Daiwa Black Label Versitle rod and 2500 Daiwa Steez. The gear handled it with ease.
Couple of other nice flatties on the day,2 x 62cms and 2 x 64cms plus some smaller ones. Happy to say ALL fish released.
I've got about 10 days to go and then off to Syndey via a friends place at Tomakin, about 140klms from here.
Tent is still going well and the Spotters are bloody fantastic!!

I am SOOOO jealous! I've only ever caught 1 lge flattie when I was a kid. I still remember thinking it looked like a small shark as it swam into view

I've always dreamed of catching a mulloway...on a plastic must've been awesome fun. They're smart lil buggers too. Hooked into a decent one in Lakes Entrance which swam straight for a pylon, swam around it then away it went. I got the impression it's used that tactic many times

Great pics, great fishing...great! Good luck to find the (really) big one :lildevil:

wow! i do a lot of jew fishing and never would have dreamed of putting on a wriggler. i use squidgy fish and berkley jerk shads with good results. now i've got another weapon ;). thats a nice catch silver. i'm off to South West Rocks in early Jan, hoping for some cobia at that time:lildevil: and plenty of jew as well:discomonkey: try hard bodied surface lures around the flats on the run out for BIG flatties as well. tight lines brother

dI could be up at SWR myself in early Jan. There are not many silver Subies with Subaxtreme nudge bars with 170 Lightforce spotties on them so keep an eye out. What car will you be in Eden?
I wasn't planning on catching Jewies, this is an 80mm wriggler. It's tiny. I was hoping to catch a Bream for a change. I do have bigger versions of this but it appears i don't need them:lol:.
Hey Nachaluva.....you have 1 week to get here....you are only down the road a bit :iconwink:...great spot...and plenty of nice Flatties . Probably have to work eh!!:raspberry:
I'ts a bit overcast at the moment but i have the battery on charge and will make up my mind over my next coffee and ciggie if i will go for a fish.
I have some squidgie Bugs that are supposed to be OK for EP's.

I'll be in my green outback also with a subaX bullbar. I'm staying at the caravan park on back creek from the 3rd to the17th. I'll PM you my number

Eden,if i am there i will call in for a beer. What dates you there?. If you drive up the hill at the end of that road you will see my car. My mates place over looks a part of the river.
I am not putting the boat in today but might go for a flick later along the banks. I've got my alarm set for a bright and early start tomorrow.
I was mucking around and thought i would post a pic of the lures i have been using so you can get an idea of how small the lure/jighead was that the Jewies have been taking.

041.jpg

The bottom one is my old faithful Black and Gold Squidgie fish 70mm that seems to work anywhere and the TT jighead i use. It's a 1/6 with (i think) a size 2/0 heavy hook. Could be a 3/0 but i don't think so.
The other is the jighead i caught the jewies on. It's about a size 1 hook and the lure is an 80mm Squidgie Bloodworm wriggler.
The 70mm and 80mm seems a bit confushing but that is how it works. The key is there to give some perspective of size.
Amazing really what big fish will eat.

Yesterday was another great morning on the Bega River..

003-1.jpg

AND I FINALLY DID IT!!:raz::lol::biggrin:

007-1.jpg

An Estuary Pearch...35cms.

I did one run past where i got the Jewies with a Squidgie Bug that i hear is good for EPs and Bass but got nothing and it was so nice out there, in the morning anyway, i thought i would have another go with the secret Jewie lure that i had been using to try and catch a bream or EP and got one.
Not much else on the day really. A couple of flatties but pretty quiet.
I'm happy!!

Stop it! You're making us all jealous! :iconwink:

I've been around the Real Estate Agents this morning (all 2 of them:lol:) and put a notice up on the local notice board to see if i can find something to rent for a year or two. The weather can get a bit dodgey here but it has a lot that i like and for my money much better for me than the Gold Coast.
I'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Xmas in Sydney for me then hopefully South West Rocks for a short stay and then pass some time somewhere until the crowds go from here and back for about 2 months.

Thanks for the pic's.
I used to swim and fish there as a kid in the late 70's. Great to see the ol' Bega River again after 30+years.
Might have to get the Subi over there for a holiday.
Do you know if there many tracks around for some offroad action?

I don't know any myself but i'm sure there would be some around as the high country is not far away and probably logging/fire tracks close here or Eden.
Feb/March would probably be the ideal time to come here. Weather/fishing should be better by then.
