Gday everyone!

Well the grand canon (or whatever you wish to call it, haha) was fairly grand! Spectacular scenery, very impressed, my only regret is that we hadn't planned to do any of the hikes, because they looked fantastic. Got an endless number of pictures which I will upload when I get to use a computer / when I get home.

We spent last night in a very budget hotel in Mexican Hat Utah which boasted a "budge rat", which I believe should be translated to "budget rates" but they were short a few letters :D

We have now arrived at Glenwood Springs Colorado, and have a day of hiking planned tomorrow. We re heading down the road to do the Hanging Lake trail, which we are told is the must-do hiking track. This is something I am very much looking forward to, so I shall report back afterward tomorrow!

We spent last night in a very budge

Greetings once again!

I am writing now from Denver, Colorado. We've spent about the last week in various parts of Colorado and I must say I love the place. We've done a couple of great hiking tracks that have been both challenging and rewarding, and we've soaked up a bit of the local culture, and I must say I am yet to meet a disagreeable person. Mt only regret is that I don't have my suby with me, because this would be a great place to explore offroad.

Alas, tonight is our last night in this great state! It is also my mates birthday, and he is determined we give the Rocky Mountain oysters a try... Can't say I'm quite as keen, but we shall see!

Anyway, tomorrow its off to South Dakota and Rapid City. Not sure how long were staying in the area for, but at least enough time to see Mt Rushmore and explore some of the surrounding area.

I've spent time in Boulder and loved it. I think those oysters are a load of bull

Haha yes Boulder was awesome fun, and the oysters are a bit of bull! The restaurant was very impressive though.

Haha just to clarify, the Rocky Mountain oysters are bull testicles, bit are pretty much just like popcorn chicken.

Hello everyone!

So its been a while since I've done a full update on my travels, but the lovely sunny shores of Lake Michigan seem like a nice comfortable place to do one!

So last time I updated I was in Denver about to leave for rapid city. We spent 3 nights in Rapid City (one of which involved a very strange incident in which I woke up to find the motel owner IN our motel room in the dead of night... Creepy) which gave us plenty of time to see the sights in the area. Mt Rushmore is of course a marvel of human achievement, and most of the appeal of the monument stems from appreciating the boundless effort put into its creation over the whopping 14 year period. The adjoining museum is also a really good opportunity to get a rundown on some American history, and is no extra charge which I thought was pretty good.

The next day we took a trip to the South Dakota badlands. This was among the most barren landscapes I have ever seen. Water poured on the ground took but seconds to be absorbed by the thirsty soil. Of course, after seeing the Grand Canyon, it was harder to appreciate the grandeur of the valleys and canyons of the badlands, but it was well worth the trip nonetheless.

Now we are in Chicago, and i have to say, what a beautiful city! This is the perfect combination between bustling metropolis and relaxing paradise. The best way I could compare it to Australian cities is that it has the architectural beauty and slightly gothic majesty of Melbourne with the epic waterfront of Sydney. Certainly my favourite American city so far!

Thanks for the update FozzyMatt :)

That Motel incident certainly does sound creepy indeed

Great to hear that you're enjoying Chicago & the sunny shores of Lake Michigan :raz:

Yes, thanks for the update! Being a resident in the area now (30mins from boulder), we went and spent some time in Boulder yesterday on our way too & from the Georgetown Loop RailRoad & the town of Frisco, just north of Breckenridge. Have to admit it's an awesome place! Can't wait for your pictures!

Dang, too bad i didn't check this earlier, could have showed you around a little..:o

FozzyMatt, If you're going to get to the Maryland area (Baltimore or Washington DC), let me know. If I can get the time off, I'll show around some out of the way places.

Hey all,

So thought it was time for another update! After Chicago we headed up to Buffalo, to pay a visit to the grand Niagara falls. So, my opinion on the falls - and reject it if you wish! - is that their mighty grandeur is somewhat stunted by the urban setting. I was actually expecting the falls to be in a rainforest setting, and had they been I think their epic scale would have seemed all the more epic, but instead they felt almost man-made. Still, a sight certainly worth seeing and the boat ride is a great way to experience an awesome force of nature up close.

Mslatfly - funny you should mention Maryland because I'm in Washington right now! Only here for a very
brief time though so unfortunately I probably don't have time to do much except take in the sights of the city - but thanks very much for the offer and I'd love to take you up on it sometime, because I am sure that ill be back!

So we have now essentially travelled coast to coast, but the journey does not end until we touch down in New York city. Btw I realise that Washington was quite a detour, bit we have to return the car to New York airport so we didn't have much choice. But it gave us a good chance to see a fair bit of Pennsylvania, which I thibk is a beautiful state that I'd love to come back and explore.

Our destination date in New York is the 8th of September, and we fly back on the 16th. This has been a fantastic journey and to those of you living in this country, I feel privileged to have had the chance to explore it!

I'd have to say that I agree with you about Niagara Falls, no matter what they are impressive, but it sure would be nice to see them in a more natural setting.

Certainly sounds like you have had the epic adventure, enjoy NYC and have a safe trip home.

Plan your next trip to the iguassu falls in south america you wont be disappointed

Did you see polar bears on the Canadian side? You might have seen my igloo too

So one last update before I head home and can start an assault of photo uploading!
Ive been in New York City for about a week now, staying in Long Island City. I'm fortunate enough to have a friend who lives over here, so basically got a free guided tour of the city! We walked across both the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, which is something I would recommend to anyone visiting New York. We also caught the ferry across to Staten island, great because its free and gives you a fantastic view of Manhattan from q distance. Exploration of the statue of liberty is very restricted since 9/11, something I wasn't aware of.

We went up to the top of Rockefeller, which provides a very impressive view, in particular of the empire state building, but unfortunately the view of the Chrysler building, which I consider the most imypressive building in the city, is almost completely obscured. A bit disappoingting but got some great pics.
Central park is a great city park - I feel like if I lived near it I'd be a lot more fit.
