Ever since I have been into Subaru’s I have wanted a 4x4 Justy. Last Christmas my wife gave me Rusty :) She bought him off of her Brother’s roommate for $500. Included in the sale were 2 sets of steel wheels, a complete 2nd engine (<future turbo build ;)) and a box of assorted parts. All I can say is I love my Wife ;)

This car is currently serving as my DD until my OBS is back on the road. I own several Subaru’s, but this one is in all honesty my favorite, lol. Well, enough chit-chat, on to the good stuff .

G'day Cañon Carver & :welcome: to ORS.

trust me i know the pain of price of petrol! (gasolene)

Same here, I pretty much go through a tank a week at $1.55
Yep, it's about the same here in NSW at the moment $1.53 a liter.
My consumption is usually around the 11-11.5ltr / 100km's (or 24-27MPG) for city driving.

Regards
Mr Turbo

I thought I would post some of the ideas I have for Rusty :)

-First up, Rocker Sliders. I figure I have a ton of rust on my rocker panels, so why not just cut out the entire rocker, and weld in some super sturdy steel panels, along the same lines of the OEM Jeep Rubicon rock sliders. Something simple, like this
poly-perfomance-rock-sliders.jpg

-Next, I want to make some tubular front and rear bumpers, with a winch, front and rear ;) I already own a Harbor Freight 2000 LB winch, and 1 more on the rear would be an awesome duo in a case of emergency offroad. Something like this

Howdy and :welcome: Cañon Carver!!!

Cool, I think your the first Justy to join the board.
That is pretty cool if I am :) Solo Justy, lol. I have to say, the little guy stands out in a crowd ;) Thank you for the warm welcome.
i reacon once the justy is done it will very capable offroad just due to the lightwieght and size
My main goal for this Justy is basically an Overland/DD vehicle. I will be adding a roof rack later on that will house probably 3-4 fuel tanks, along with water, full size spare('s?), and some other handy items as well. I can go about 400 miles on a full tank (9.2 Gal), and with the addition of extra fuel tanks I hope to extend that by at least another tank, so 800 miles worth of fuel if all is perfect.

I do believe because of it's small stature, weight, and so on and so forth, that it WILL be VERY capable offroad, especially with a lift, turbo 1.2, and some new axles MUCH later on (I have dreams of Sami axles under Rusty :bcool:)

Like I stated before in the journal, I have a couple different Subie projects going at once, and I take my time carefully planning every move before I do it. Less mistakes tend to happen this way :)

Nice to see a Justy on here. I always kind of liked those little buggers; they remind me a lot of the Fiat Panda 4x4 (the real Panda 4x4 - [ame=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1I5IDIrtYzI]this[/ame] one) I used to have :)

One thing about rocker guards: I really don't recommend cutting the sills unless you're going to do a straight-up replacement of them, then running the rocker guards outside of them. I've seen both methods done on unibody 4x4s (XJ Cherokees, mostly) and while just replacing the sills with heavier steel can work, having a little bit of leeway between the two helps when you've got a pile of weight on that part of the vehicle.

I used to run these double-tube rocker guards on my XJ, and it's a design that works remarkably well. Granted, I don't know how well it might translate over to a Justy - but having just that extra little bit of space between the rail and panels made a world of difference to maintaining body strength in a slide.

Other than that, I'm really interested to see what you come up with for it. I've got a weird love of ultralight 4x4s, so am very interested to see how far you can take it.

what other subie projects are you doing?

Oh, just a few ;)

I have my OBS that will be used primarily for Time Attack/Time Trials, nothing major(I am not Ken Block, lol), and I also have a '94 Impreza L Wagon that I plan on making into a major highway vehicle for my wife who commutes pretty far every day for work. The L Wagon is FWD, so the goal is to have the longest running gears possible, mated to a 6 spd trans, with the 1.8 pepped up a bit, PnP, etc, mostly MPG mods :)

The OBS build can be seen here...

I see this is a great forum all ready :) I really appreciate all of the warm welcomes. There is only one other site that has welcomed me so well, and I frequent it every day, I hope this place is the same

I will take your rocker rail options into great consideration as I am not that avid of a 4 wheeler. I have had only a couple major "rigs" in my day( '93 full size Bronco W/ Supercharged 302, lifted '93 Ranger), but wheeling in a Subie is a whole new ball game to me. I have a couple sketches drawn up that I would like to somehow post here for approval/further ideas. I guess I need to learn how to use Mac Paint a little better, lol.

Casm,

I just got done fiddling through a couple Panda vids on Youtube, and I am pretty happy with what I see. The Justy and the Panda have what seems to be about the same approach angles, short, stout wheelbase, and just enough pep to turn the rubber when needed ;) With that said, I am now having 0 doubts that this will be an awesome little trail monster:lildevil: Now I am even more eager to start modifying:lol:

Dude I think I love Rusty!

Can't wait to see it as an offroad weapon.

Lol, it does grow on you :)

I let my buddy drive it to get coffee this morning. When he came back he was grinning from ear to ear, so I asked "What's up with you?", and he replied "I don't think I have ever driven a car that makes me feel like a little kid playing with a Matchbox car, except the fact that I just DID drive a Matchbox car!". I now have him searching for a Justy for his own DD, lol.

Update-

I started more rust removal last night, and I hope to have Rusty fully rust free in a couple weeks :) After the rust is all gone it will be sanded down with some 80 grit and blasted with Speedliner bedliner, courtesy of a friend in the business ;) The scheme will be White bedliner on top, with Black trim on the bottom. Something like this scheme...

(I know, it's not a Subie, lol)

I also started mocking up my gauge panel. I love making panels for anything, in fact a majority of my friends come to me for stupid custom stuff all the time, lol. Here is a panel I made for my OBS a while back...

These are actually my gauges that will go in Rusty;)
