Taza's $300 L-Series

I need to continue and finish the journal for my Forester but I will start one for this anyway.

While the Foz is being repared (new gearbox, engine work, subaxtreme bullbar fitment and finish off the supercharger) I bought a cheap L-Series from gumtree.
Cost $300 and its a 91 L-series Sportswagon, 230,000km on the clock, smooth gearbox, engine runs really well but dies on idle and doesn't blow any smoke at all! The body is in great condition for a car thats 21years old. A few dents but can all be popped out.
No rust at all, and barely any on the exhaust.

Needs a new front CV, has a small oil leak (not going to fix it), 3 bald tyres, engine dies on idle, temp guage doesn't work and no stereo or immobilser..

Just gotta do a few things to get it over the pits and she should be running and road licenced for about $500!!!

Well here are the pics of the damage when someone reversed into him.

Bucked the bonnet and smashed the front of the fender quite badly :(

Bending the roo bar back and out of the way for the time being.

Him getting towed back home after drowing out at the pines mudding. Water got in the dizzy and I didn't have any WD-40 to clean it out. It was running on 1 cylinder then just wouldn't fire at all. A mate driving my Forester and me in the L at 11.30pm.

You dont have the strap around the towball do you Taza? :poke::eek:

Such a shame you cant get the guys who did it :eviltoyou:

Yes it is. I was only pulling about half a metre, definately not snatching. Hell I didn't even use the accelerator, just the clutch to move forward and bend it back. lol
I wasn't worried about the strap breaking as it is my distribution strap and rated for 12tonne. lol and if the towball broke from that I would be extremely worried.

Yeah I know I wish I could make them pay but anyway.
I have put together the Advert to sell him  Asking 2k o.n.o as it is mechanically A1, better than my forester in fact  and the interior is in mint condition. Just he exterior is about average, but still no rust (less than the foz too). A friend is just using it one last time as she wrote her car off the other night in an accident.

if its that much better condition then you foz then maybe you should it :rotfl:

Looks like the front bar saved you somewhat there mate.

Pity you didn't catch whoever did it :yell:
These people are just scumbags :mob:

Great vid Taza. Sounds like you were in high range? That L has an awesome sounding exhaust! :monkeydance:

Thanks, yep high range 1st gear. Low range is just too low. the EA82 is a good engine for what it is. Nice an torquey down low unlike the EJ's. Sucks up high though after 4500rpm.

It will be missed when sold :(

I'm going to get a few more vids and pics before I sell him. Then make up a tribute video.

Totally the opposite of the EJ20 then. Sucks below bout 2300rpm and sings above 4000rpm. I dont like revving that high but it really does like it! :lildevil:

Haha, sounds like you're bidding a loved friend farewell :iconwink:

Yep the complete opposite. It's much nicer to drive around town and for merging as you don't have the revv the ring out of it to get it anywhere unlike the Forester. It's torque pull in gear to accellerate is similar to that of an EJ25 Ouback and r*pes my Forester, also making it much nicer to drive.
I'm very anti EJ20 N/A. Straight after uni 'The POS' engine will be getting pulled out for a real engine. Either H6 or turbo EJ25 sti/wrx motor.

Haha, sounds like you're bidding a loved friend farewell :iconwink:
Feels like it. wierdly enough although its not a really fast car its fun to drive, the Forester is too but not as fun. The L just puts a smile on my face and the EA82 sounds just awesome with the stock exhaust. After uni I'm am definately buying another 1 atleast!

I'm sorry to hear and see the damage to your subi, I reckon you got off lightly though! I thought the front guard and part of the door was a goner. It'll be painful to straighten out, but a good second hand guard and bonnet plus a new set of RH lights and you'll be back in business. A lick of paint (the real painful part IMO) and you'll be sorted.

I don't find this with the EJ22, I'd say that below 2G there's not a lot there, but you can use it in certain situations. And it'll keep going from there right up to the rev limiter, yes I've been there a couple of times.

Apparently the EJ22 bolts in with no wiring mods :poke:

It'll bolt in alright, as for wiring if the intake manifold bolts straight up you're in business. If not, read below:

Into your car it would. It works with the EJ20J/EJ201 not the EJ202 which I have :( Plus it's only 4kw more but 15Nm which would be nice :iconwink:

If the intake manifold doesn't bolt to the EJ22 you can take to the EJ22's intake manifold with some ally plate and a welder - the aim here is to make the EJ20's ECU sensors fit the EJ22 manifold. Or you could pioneer some intake adaptors much like the carbie adaptor plates... Food for thought.

Cheers

Well done almost 2000km in the L-Series this week. Went like a dream for most of it.

Had to make a trip up north in him and it did the whole 1000km without a hickup bar from the last 100km where it was surging and dieing under any kind of load, even accellerating! Forced us to drive back at ~80km/hr, we did make it back though!

Trip report of it here.
https://offroadsubarus.com/showthread.php?t=3793

I was going to buy a new or rebuild the carby thinking it was causing the surging and power loss issues which were random and dangerous at times. After discussing with david's Dad he suggested the fuel filter! I didn't even think but that turned out to be causing issues with my Forester and Daves Outback back in Feb this year. Changed that and what do you know.... it drives likea dream, heaps of power with the stock 13" wheels. It's bloody brilliant!
The car has a torque pull from any gear below 3500rpm that is as good as an EJ25! It seriously powers along, flogs the hell out of my 2.0l Forester!!
Tightened the clutch yesterday too in it as the grabbing point was at the very end of the pedal. The grabbing point is now 1/2 to 2/3 of the way out, it's nice and tight like a new car and not loose. It really is a nice car to drive now.

I cleaned him up this afternoon and have put up adverts to sell him! :(
I have put a higher price than planned on and if it sells then great and if not I'm keeping it  ...... and modding!

Taza, always remember... KISS (Keep It Simple Son)
Always look for the easiest to fix /most likely causes first, then consider the more difficult/expensive.

Glad it was an easy fix :iconwink:

I kinda hope you dont sell it & make it a great bush basher with a mega lift. That way you dont have to go silly with your Foz...

I put it up last night and have already had over 50 views and 2 phone calls asking to look at it tomorrow.
It's mega clean, inside, outside. Polished, hell even the door sills are clean, everything is wd-40'ed. Drives like a dream. Tightened the clutch, wheel alignment, engine is running very very smooth and economical.
I really don't want to sell it but having 2 cars with no income is really hard. I can then fix the foz engine and finally get it running as it has a stuffed wheel bearing and the starter motor is buggered too :(

It will be sad to see it go! looks like you and the wagon have had quite a journey!

I'm in the same position as you at the moment, two cars, Uni Student, tiny income from casual work(coles). i dont want to get rid of either of them, but i need to make a practical decision, not an emotional one.

Best of luck with the sale! hope to see more video's of the wagon up on youtube as well!

Cheers,

Nuzo

Yes it will be sad! It is truely an awesome beast. My job isn't enough to afford two cars either. I really don't want to sell it and it is also very handy to have when the foz breaks or the likes.
I know what you mean about a practical decision. Once I get the Forester modded how I want it I will be happy but until then I want the L-Series as my main car :raspberry:
Thanks! I wanted more vids of the wagon offroad too but I highly doubt that will happen :(
I have many pics atleast and some awesome memories! :iconwink:
