Using Subaru Upper Engine Cleaner

The UEC is designed to stop build up of carbon deposits. By doing this regularly it removes small amounts before they have a chance to build up. Once they have built up due to the UEC not being used, the UEC can break off sections of build up which may damage the rings or lodge between valve and seat- which burns the valve.

A Subie guy showed me how to do it and i do it myself in a few minutes.
There is a hose on the top of the manifold which i dissconnect and then follow the instructions on the can. Real easy. Mine is an MY05 Forrester and some are slightly different. Suggest the easiest way is to call into a Subie dealer and ask them how to do it. They are usually pretty good.
Also use the fuel additive every 10,000 or so.
What i usually do is run a tank or two of Optimax or BP Ultimate etc through the car, use the cylinder cleaner, change the oil and than add the fuel stuff to my next fill up.
I think if you check you will find that Subaru say to use the fuel stuff every 6,500klms or so.

Does no harm to use it (our mechanic has always used it in both Impreza and Camry donks; and now in Roo2).

As Rally said, the almost certain potential for very serious damage arises when it is not used in modern engines.

The tolerances in modern donks is incredibly fine compared with those of 30+ years ago; unheard of, in fact. With such fine tolerances, it is very, very easy to block up important things - valves, valve guides, the upper two piston rings, plugs, injectors; as well as heaps of other ancillary bits like sensors etc.

Subaru (and probably most other manufacturers ... ) specify its use for good reason - just like changing the oil, and air and oil filters etc. Necessary periodic maintenance.

I've been using SUEC in my MY05 XT together with premium fuel since buying my Subi new.
I'm know Rally uses it too, but I'm not sure as to whether he uses it in both his WRX & Forry, or just the Forry.

true, but both you and rally have to use premium due to the turbo engines, mine are N/A.
i would suspect that using the premium would reduce carbon build up on the cylinder heads but would not reduce it in other areas of the engine
