Another morning on the Maclay river. Fishing for whiting which is not something i normally do. Only got 3 but i got my biggest one (not hard as i don't remember catching many!!)...32cm. Great morning anyway.

I could not be more jealous if you if I tried... I just went back to work last wednesday after a week of fishing and now I have absolutely no annual leave left so it's gonna be a looong time before I can do anything else :(

Well i had a few days at South West Rocks as per pics and moved on to Laurieton to carch up with a mate but did not do any fishing and i have now been at Karuah for a couple of days in a nice Big4 caravan park. Thought it might be nice and quiet here since the bypass went in and i was right. I put the boat in yesterday and what a stuff up!!! I've been fishing 100's of times with other people but my boat handling skills leave a lot to be desired. Got the boat in ok, my reversing ability is pretty bad, and there was a strong tidal flow and i figured it would be wise to turn the boat around and head out bow first.....did i do it?....no. Tried to reverse out and the tide got me and smashed me into the gap between the walkway and the pontoon and i cracked the cowling on the motor and put a hole in my new motor cover. Anyway i ended up geting away ok after almost running into another boat that was launching and not long after ran over some rocks that were hard to see as the water was quite muddy.
Funiest home videos when i'm around:lol::lol::lol:

Here is a pic of my rig. Lucky i took a photo, might not be much left of it by the time i finish!

Karuah River from the boat ramp.

Traveled up a creek for about 2/3 klms.

Same creek.
Really nice and quite up here and a nice sunny day to boot.
Got about 6 flatties,no size to speak of and they are still swiming free:ebiggrin:

This shot is a bit ordinary but was the best i could do. I am trying to show the LED headlamp i bought and how good it is. The tree in the photo is about 40mtrs away. It is a single LED with a focus lens on it. Only works in 3 modes,1/2 power/full power and flashing. Bloody fantastic but it can chew batteries so i use rechargeables.

Here is a nice view of the Central Coast NSW. Weather was a bit rubbish so the pic is not so good. Didn't go fishing here. Just visiting rels and have now moved on to Sydney to give my sister a hand for a few days and catch up with some family and will be leaving for Nowra and surrounds on Thursday morning.

What fuel economy are you getting? Went on a trip with Taza in his 2.0 Foz he got 20L/ 100km on the highway at one point with a similar size boat! The 2.0 really struggled towing, plus with all the weight of stuff we had.

Weight is always a killer. I got almost exactly 10ltrs/100. I keep things to a minimum and even at my sisters place here in Sydney i have repacked and am leaving some stuff to pick up on my way home.
I read that trip report earlier today and with all the cars you would certainly find a lot of duplication of stuff bought along.
In my case i have 1 frypan, 1 pot, some knives, a couple of forks etc, 1 plate, 1 bowl etc. They are s/s so won't break. I sometimes do a one pot meal and eat it out of the pot to save washing up.
I have 2 bags of clothes, one normal and one with stuff for cold weather, a self inflating matteress, a blanket,a lightweight doona,a pillow and a few other small bags of stuff.
I also have a 50ltr fridge,a tool box and an ARB portable compressor, a lightweight tent, some tarps and fishing gear. Of course some of this is in the boat but when i camp i take everything i can out of the car as long as i think it is safe to do so.
Towing the boat i usually sit on 100klms/ph max.
Funny enough..the luggage pod i used for a while on the roof racks buggered my economy more than towing the boat. Stuff on the roof is deadly for fuel economy.

There was only one car on our trip but we did have quite abit of stuff. I was averaging around 14L per 100km but with a decent amount of stuff on the roof.
It was just with wind and hills where it was an issue, but your 2.5l engine has 25% more power than my 2.0l so that would help ease the load too. Im really looking forward to your long trip report, it should be interesting!

Taza

Yeah, that's right. The 2.5 would certainly be more economical in this situation. I thought you had quite a few cars with you or were they only on part of the trip?
I reckon once i get into the headwinds accross the 'plain' my fuel use will increase.:raz:
I'm pretty happy with 10 per 100 though. I thought it would be worse.

I've had lots of experience (40,000km+) towing a Stockman Podtrailer camper with a 4m kayak on top all over Australia with my 07 XT manual. Overall I have averaged 11.2L/100km, with a best of 9.9L/100km sticking to 100 in still conditions and a worst of 14.1L/100km sitting on 120 into a headwind going across the Nullarbor between Nullarbor and Mundrabilla. I'd love to know what rate it was sucking it down when I took it up to 170 between Firzroy Crossing and Halls Creek last year. One of the reasons I reckon the XT gets relatively good consumption towing is that it only has to use a small percentage of the available power. An 04 XS manual owner towing a trailer similar to mine who I was talking to at the Windjana Gorge camping grounds in the Kimberleys last year was getting at least 50km less from a tank out of his when towing at our usual speed up there of 110. I count on less than 2L/100km increase over no towing driving under the same conditions/speeds. The best distance on a tank I've done when towing was 504km and it took 54L to fill. ( Roma to Emerald in Central QLD including into Carnarvon Gorge) And strong headwinds when towing will make an incredible difference.

Well, i've moved on and am now at Woollamia near Huskisson on Jervis Bay. Went through Gerroa as i thought this might be my first stop but no good for fishing so headed to Nowra but too many people. It's certainly got a lot more popular down this way than i remember.
Then again it is almost 30 years since i have been around these parts!
The Tourist Information lady thought i might like it here in the 'bush camp' and it's not bad really. She said it was quiet and i was told it had a 'basic' boat ramp. Basic and rustic are just other words for 'rubbish'.
Too lazy to do maintainence.....call it basic. Run down and a wreck....call it rustic.
Other than that it's not bad except the 'clip board lady' is alive and well here.
The back of the sheet of paper you fill in when you arrive has 36 items all starting with don't or do not. Some are in red and some others in red AND highlighted! The dunny door has 1 A4 sheet of stuff not to do on the front and 5 to read while you are doing your business on the inside of the door.
The laundry has 19.....yep....19 pages of A4 rules and don'ts. Even the rubbish bin in the dunny block has a notice over it saying not to use this rubbish bin but take your stuff to the main rubbish bin at the front of the park!!! I kid you not.
Anyway here are a couple of pics.
I'll try and put the boat in later today when the tide comes up a bit or i might just walk along the edge and flick a lure.

The 'basic' boat ramp.
Whoops....messed up there.

This is the nice location. How do you delete one of these pics???

Really enjoying your report and pics silver!!! (even if I don't post something every update)

You should be able to go into the edit post, highlight the pic and hit delete and that should take care of it. If you can't get it to work, one of us will be happy to take care of it for you. Just let us know.

Hi Carl.
Hope all is well with you in the good old US of A.
I'm getting better. Managed the complicated task of deleting that pic:ebiggrin:.
I didn't put the boat in but spent a couple of hours walking along the bank flicking plastics but not much good. Had a couple of hits and lost one OK fish. It was nice anyway.
The first night i had a rather friendly possum jump on to my table and happily try to stick his snout in my dinner. He probably couldn't read as i am sure there would be a sign ( or 2 or 3) around about not feeding the possums pasta. Anyway i polietly declined his self invitation to share my meal and gave him a pat and sent him on his way. Quite a friendly critter he was.
Today i am moving on to Basin View on the western edge of St. Georges Basin to see what it is like. I'll also check out Sussex Inlet.
I'm not sure this is what i am after and am looking forward to getting away from suburbia.
I caught up with my mate in Sydney and he has the job at Point Turton in South Oz and we need to be there about mid December so i need to keep moving to cover some ground.
Regardless of the fishing, it's nice to be out and around.

A bit of an update. I have moved on and took a bit of time going into places to have a look.

St Georges Basin

007-2.jpg

Manyana
St Georges Basin, although nice was no good for fishing for me. Very shallow and it was full of weed and not nice on the nose. Swampy type of smell. Manyana was very pretty, like lots of the underated South Coast, but more of a surf spot.
I travelled on and saw a sign to Fishermans Paradise so of course i had to go there. It's on Lake Conjola. To cut a long story short, it's got about 400 people and no services, shops, petrol or anything really.
It has got a good boat ramp and i met a fellow there and did a deal....i take him fishing and i could camp at his joint. He knew the lake well and it's really a nice spot.We went out that arvo but no luck.
Weather was against me so next day i flicked lures along the bank and got a couple of good flatties.
Then travelled down the coast and ended up here...

Don't think the little fellow liked having his photo taken.
This place is called Pretty Beach in Murramerang National Park. I'm at a NP camping ground and.......IT"S BLOODY FANTASTIC!!!!!
The first pic was taken yesterday and it was fairly overcast and it poured, thunder lighting, winds, the full monty. The tent did spring a leak but nothing some seam sealer won't fix.
There is almost nobody here, it costs $14 per night for a powered site for 1 person, has BBQs, shower block, laundry but forget that.....the water is crystal clear, and its peacefull in a great setting. The pictures do not do it justice. I'm loving it!! Booked in for 3 nights here.
Heading off for Mogo, south of Batemans Bay on Friday. An old school mate and his wife live there and will catch up with them for a couple of days.:ebiggrin:
