Best milage on a tank of fuel yet!

That is good going for your Outback! What size engine is it?

I did that trip in February from Adelaide and then along the Great Ocean Road, had a great time (if you got good fuel consumption I am guessing you took the direct route). Hope to make it back to Australia in a few years. We stopped at Robe for a night and I really wanted to drive on the beach there, but I don't think our little Hyundai hire car would have apreciated it much.

65 litres, or 64 - I forget which.

Yes, was the direct route through Murray Bridge.

On trips we get a bit over 600km a tank before the reserve light comes on. Best was about 720km, but the reserve light was on for a long time.

Around town it's more like 450 - 480km a tank before the reserve light comes on.

Accuracy of fuel consumption readings.

Filled up the OB this morning and noted the readings of the 'fuel consumption' on the dash compared with actual re-fill.

Elapsed kilometres: 600 (actually 598.5 km) [And was displaying 100km to empty.]

Displayed fuel consumption: 8.8 l/100km.

Refill of tank required: 56.5 litres.

Actual consumption / 100 km: 56.5/6 = 9.426 litres.

After filling the tank the instruments displayed 800km to empty.

I have repeatedly found that the instruments display a significantly lower consumption than actual.

A 64 litre tank would give:-
  • 800 km to empty @ 8.0 litres / 100km;
  • 727 km to empty @ 8.8 litres / 100km ;
  • 679 km to empty @ 9.426 litres / 100km.

Barry im guessing you wouldn't actually get 800km from a tank with city driving?

So far with my semi economical tank/ normal driving run I am nearly at half a tank and have hit 300km (photos to prove later). I know that when my fuel gauge says half a tank its below 30litres (ment to be a 60l tank). So I think im getting around 8.5-9litres per 100km for city driving

9.4L/100km - that's so typical of what my Forester gets. I could never fit 56L in it though.

The difference between the displayed and real consumption is more than you'd expect too, though probably no worse than the inaccurate speedo.

At the half full mark on my fuel guage mine only takes 28L and at the quarter full mark it takes 40L.

Mine still has 15L left in the tank or there abouts when the fuel light comes on. Also I have done 320km and she is on half a tank. I think she will get around 700km to the tank  Double what the H6 Foz gets

I have usually done around 300km at the half mark and around 430km at the quarter.

I do find although my foz is meant to have a 60 litre tank, when the gauge is totally empty I still only get about 50 litres in. Good to know there is some reserve in there.

I think my good fuel consumption must have been perfect conditions as I have done three tanks since ( lots of miles for work) last week and consumption has been more like 350 miles instead of 400.

Good to see what everyone else gets. Anyone got a diesel Subaru?

With your 07 XT????? :surprised:
Yes, that's normal driving on the h'way - sometimes it does a bit better. It has averaged 9.6L/100km over its 181,000km life which is a lot better than Subaru's claim of 11.4L/100km for a manual 07 XT. My brother's 03 X manual does no better unless we really get up them, but then mine will just disappear into the distance. I find it quite easy to get in the mid 8's cruising within the law.

Done 611km while driving around town in the foz. It hasn't been real economical driving. Usuaully changing gears around 3000rpm. Sometimes putting your foot down to pull out of intersections, etc...
I have been driving with the fuel light on for the past 30km. I know I can get 40km more but after that I don't know. I have 10L of petrol in the boot for when she conks out, hopefully not at a set of traffic lights :S

Im aiming for 650 to 700km. If I could get this around town I would be ecstatic because thats usually better than what I get on the highway. The bad areo dynamics of the foz make her shocking ont he highway and to pass a car you have your foot planted to the floor of a good few minutes each time in 4th gear so that wouldn't help.

I have photo proof to show for this run and will let you guys know how I go.

On a trip to New Orleans this summer, which included into/out of New Orleans - 394 statute miles on 13.472 US gallons = 29.25 MPG's. Over the last 10,000 miles combined average (city/highway/Wimberely, Texas included) 25.8 MPG's. If I could only keep my wife out of my Forester on the weekends the last numbers would probably hover around 28-29 MPG's.

Best tank of City Driving

This is my best tank ive managed with city driving. I averaged just below 8.92L per 100km. This was not with a real light foot either, mainly changing gears around 3000rpm and sometimes having to pull out quickly, etc..
I got 639.7km and as I pulled inot my street where I live and put my foot steadily down on Monday when I was coming home from work she spluttered abit but then stopped and I managed to pull inot my driveway. So not completely empty but very almost. I fueled up 58L in the tank so not exactly 60L.

I reckon if one of my parents drove her around town for 2 or 3 weeks on one tank they would get 700km then she would probably splutter around abit. I was only worried that she was going to conk out at the lights and then I would be in deep sh*t

My Foz is a 2001 with 2.0L N/A EJ20 engine, 5speed Manual.

Here is proof.

Fuel light on.

Almost 100km after the fuel light being on. This was asI pulled into my driveway just after she spluttered 200m on the corner into my street.

If your last corner or drive is a r/h turn it can throw what is left in the tank over to the passenger side and you'll run out with a couple of litres left in the tank, happened to me once pulling into a steep r/h up hill drive, it drove to the top ok but wouldn't start again and I knew I had at least 2-3L in the tank as my fuel light is dead accurate at 9L.

Did you take into account the extra rolling diameter of your tyres? probably add 5% to the total figure.

Did a run from Toowoomba to Byron Bay and back yesterday, cruising with the speedo on 105/110 mostly and did 548.2km using 44L. The gauge was a bit below the 1/4 mark. That's 8L/100km.

My Forester has gone through cycles its whole life where for about 5000km it will get better economy than the next 5000km and at the moment I'm in a patch of good economy.

MY09 2.5 Manual

I've averaged 8.2l per hundred for my first 35000 km. That includes a lot of country roads, some interstate and maybe a third on dirt. Say, ten per cent commuting.

I've averaged 6.6l for 100km on freeways around Sydney sticking to about 90kmph (it did go down to 6.4 for a while) and I had an especially good run back from Canberra with a 7.4 average while doing a little over 120 the entire time. That's a downhill run, in fairness and I was in traffic so that would have helped, too.

I usually get around 600-650 to a tank depending on time in the stop/start stuff. That's better than I thought it would be on purchase day. I was expecting mid-9s per hundred.

Anyone have the diesel?

Yesterday I saved about 1L per 100km by not using my cruise control on the highway and changing gear at 2,500RPM instead of 3,000. I've noticed my cruise constrol constantly slows down and speeds up by about 1km per hour on the speedo, even on a flat road. In conjunction with my change in diff ratio (another 1L per 100km) i've got my fuel consumption down as low as 8.2L per 100km, i'm pretty happy with that :D
